Male or female, if the character is awesome I'll want to play as them. Claire Redfield, Samus Aran, Aya Brea, Juri Han, Hitomi(DOA), Yukiko Amagi, Tharja I could keep going, but the list would be nearly endless lol. The only time that I specifically choose a certain gender. Is when it's a create a character type deal, or when I am basically playing the role as the protagonist. Because usually it gives me choices, and dialogue options that fit more in line with my preferences. Or just because I'll see myself as that character. Other wise I'm completely neutral, on who I play as.

I'm a new found-fan of the show. Even though I feel that you guys don't like this system very much, I want to recommend two very underrated games for Microsoft Xbox 360 that I own both with female protagonists. The first is called Wet from Bethesda with a character called Rubi Malone voiced by Eliza Dushku and the second is called Otomedius Excellent from Konami which is a sequel to a Japan only release called Otomedius G (Gorgeous!) spin-off of the Gradius series. This was a great episode and I look forward to watching more episodes including past ones I haven't seen yet.

David White Correct, the first game Otomedius G (Gorgeous!) which is the Japan only release on Xbox 360 is a spin-off of the Parodius series and the game that I got Otomedius Excellent is the sequel to Otomedius G that also happens to be a spin-off of Gradius, I got it for $8 new on Amazon and so far its the only US release of the series for 360, as for Wet I got that one for $3 at my local pawn shop like new CIB and this game is also available on PS3.

I strongly believe a lot of the sales for the first Tomb Raider were helped by the fact that it was a female protagonist but for obvious sexist reasons in the case of guys buying it :P. Everybody knows about the shower scene and the allegedly technique to get her to undress certainly attracted lots of pervs in there XD. There were a lot of games prior to this one that starred female protagonists but Lara is perhaps one of the earliest examples of a protagonist made sexy on purpose, so that got people's attention. Well that and the fact that it was one of the earliest examples of a full 3D platformer (as in NOT like Crash Bandicoot or Pandemonium where you're on a set path all the time), while the world was growing impatient waiting on the next 3D Mario or Sonic which had been kings of platforms during the 16-bit era. So yeah, in my opinion, Tomb Raider starring a sexy female protagonist really did help sales, but obviously that wasn't the only contributing factor to its success. A lot of girls around that time with a brother or father owning a Playstation got into video games by being attracted by this strong and beautiful woman archetype, at least I did notice that back then through three of my female cousins and a couple more friends at school.

***** I don't take my education of what happened back then from any outside source, it's what I could perceive firsthand back then. I remember very vividly my first experience of Tomb Raider PS1, we were 6 kids in the same house, I had never seen a PS1 before, and the young dude who owned the system and game was going on only about how you could get her to undress, and how that was a big deal. Maybe it wasn't the case for you, but among us young guys back then, that MADE the game a thing. I don't need to be educated, I speak of my own experience, the way I witnessed it and the way it's engraved in my memory. Heck, I still have some magazines from back then and I can tell you, in the ads, the taglines were definitely centered around the fact she's a beautiful and badass woman. It was a selling point that was advertised on. Yeah she was blocky, so what? It was still more realistic than anything that had come before it and enough to get young dudes our age (about 10~11 years old) to want to try and see her getting out of the pool and heading to the shower, and to see her undress (though obviously the game NEVER contained that XD). It may not have been THE reason it sold so much, but for a lot of the people I knew back then, it definitely WAS a selling point.

Pushing in the left analog stick is how you run in a lot of modern games, especially modern fps's. I actually prefer it to having to press one of the face buttons, like pressing circle to run in Dark Souls. I don't want to have to give up control of the camera just so I can sprint. I end up having to press the circle button with my index finger while keeping my thumbs on the analog sticks, which is a pretty contorted way of controlling the game. I end up with a hand cramp if I play too long.

To be honest, I think this question does have an actual answer which is both! There are lots of games that could be described as sexist and lots and lots of games that couldn't. I can't see the real damage done by an online show that points out some that, in the opinion of the author, could. It's not going to change anything, no one who gave a crap about social issues reflected in games is going to be convinced that all the stuff they find uncomfortable is fine. Likewise no one who hates PC, "SJW" (is that really an insult? Okaaay), Tumblr stereotypes etc. is going to be convinced that actually there is a real problem with representation in games. The publishers are going to publish what sells, and with the core game market still largely focused on the same things it has been before (albeit with casual style microtransactions tacked on the side...), what sells is not going to be "Tumblr Victimhood Quest VIII" or whatever you people think the SJWs are up to next. They will have their indie games, you will have what you've always had. It's about ethics in video game journalism right? Stop making purchasing decisions based on reviews and I'd say the problems are all fixed.

I am surprises the Playstation game Medal of Honor Underground was not mentioned. In the game you play Manon Batiste, a woman of the French Resistance during WW2 who does missions for the OSS, and during the credits of the game they have interviews with women who fought as spies for the OSS during WW2. The PC had some great games with female leads. Such as King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella. You play Princess Rosella who is trying to find a why to prevent her father, King Graham (The protagonist of King's Quest I, II, and V), from dying, and has to help a Fairy Queen from dying due to the actions of a Fairy Witch. Rosella was strongly written and was bad ass. In King's Quest VII you play Rosella and her mother as well. But they turned the character back a bit to make it more Disney like, even includes a, "I want" song. And The Longest Journey trilogy. The plots of the game are so epic I can barely scratch the surface here. But in the first game you play April Ryan that goes through a journey between alternate Earths, one of science and one of Magic, as the barriers between them are starting to collapse. The Sequel involves a major plot set in both Earths and though you play as April Ryan at points as well as a male character, the main character you play is Zoe Castillo who can shift through both worlds by dreams. The final chapter in the games is in progress now with Dreamfall chapters as chapters are released...

Every feminist game critic should play The Longest Journey. One of the most well written adventure games (if not video games) of all time that stars a teenage girl that is petite, dresses modestely, is funny and intelligent yet imperfect and relatable with her own problems (ie a realisticly written character and not a Mary Sue or whatever they call them). But of course they'll only bother to take a quick glance at Gears of War and the AAA market and conclude that games dont have any female protagonists. Nevermind the fact that Roberta Williams, "the grandmother of video games", founded one of the biggest and most influental development studios of the 80s and early 90s.
@fuxyews2177

Well the immediate issue is that 'feminist' and 'gamer' are words that dont go together (atleast the fringe feminists that would make such complains..) and they're the same ones that would also go out of their way to block anyone from stating said facts when possible.. Its one of the reasons I don't understand why anyone bothers with any fringe groups on any subject at any point.. *they* know they're full of shit, *we* know they're full of shit, so theres nowhere to go.. I'm even fed up wasting my time typing about those people.. Just mock and walk away (imo)..

The Longest Journey was a long time ago. I think the problem is that every feminist game critic has already played The Longest Journey and Mirror's Edge and Portal and they just want more. No problem in giving people more of what they want, no? Plus, if they're busy playing games aimed at them it's less time spent on complaining about games aimed at everyone else.
@talideon

You're arguing a strawman. Said game critics would look at The Longest Journey series and say "yes, more of that, please", and that's really the point: their argument is that women are under-represented as protagonists and antagonists, and when featured as secondary characters are often written lazily to fit negative character tropes, such as the damsel or the sexpot. Their argument is that women should be better represented in games because they're half the population and that they should be written as, y'know, people. Surely that's not a terrible thing for them to expect in this day and age? You fix that, and a lot of their arguments all but go away.

***** The 'too sexy' thing is often about dumb-ass stuff like dressing female characters in bikini armour while their male counterparts get something that actually looks practical. This is an example of the sort of stuff that annoys them: i.imgur.com/Ltt3uxA.jpg - in the original artwork, the female source hunter is wearing the clichéd bikini armour while the male one is wearing more practical gear, whereas in the revised artwork, she's wearing practical armour. She's no less sexy, it's just that she's no longer _sexed up_ at the expense of believability or practicality. No woman I know, for what it's worth, has problems with sexy woman characters, so much as _sexed up_ ones.

This is the best video game series on KZitem, retro or not. It would be great if some time in the future you did an episode on the MSX, FM Towns/FM Towns Marty, Amiga or DOS games. I know that you probably didn't grow up playing stuff on these platforms, but there's some gems there. If you weren't sure what to play you could mention on the end of one of the videos that you're planing to do a future episode on such and such platform/console and you'd get a bunch of suggestions in the comments. Also, games on certain consoles/platforms can be very rare, many from companies that no longer exist, so I don't think you should feel bad about pirating them in order to do a review (but playing on the original consoles/computers) and I don't think any of your fans would care either.

David White yeah I think its $20, but its totally worth it. I would recommend getting it on Wii U. Its easily my top game of 2014...even better than Shovel Knight and a lot longer too. There is also a 2nd Shantae game you can download for 3DS that is equally as good and only cost 5 or 6 bucks. Its like MW4 only you can backtrack and open up new areas, so its a "metroidvania" style game as well. BTW check out a game called La Mulana on WiiWare, it is THE best MetroidVania game I've ever played!

NeoMahi WE TOTALLY FORGOT! I know... we are horrible people and we should be tried and executed. I MEAN REALLY! Anyway the games you mention don't feature gameplay that's exclusively geared towards a female protagonist (except Code Veronica) and that's what we were looking for here.

Game Sack So, you say it needs to be gameplay geared toward a female protagonist, eight? Well, Lara Croft is wielding two pistols and moving about climbing and firing weapons at animals. So, what disqualifies Resident Evil 3: Nemesis from your criteria? She packs multiple weapons and shoots at Zombies. I guess she doesn't climb and swing about but, I think last I remember, it's Jill running from Nemesis, as is the case with Haunting Ground. So, how does Nemesis not apply?
@GMMXX80

NeoMahi By that I mean, Jill is the only playable character in Resident Evil 3, and Haunting Ground works a sort of similar fashion, more so like Clock Tower. Ah well. We'll let it slide this time. By the way, whose Alicia Sarkeesian or whatever her name is?

I started thinking about one game then all of these came out. 1 - Parasite Eve series (PS1) 2 - The Guardian Legend (NES) 3 - Alisia Dragoon (Genesis) 4 - Beyond Good and Evil (PS2) 5 - La Pucelle Tactics (PS2) 6 - Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (DS - my version, anyway :/) 7 - Dragon Force (Saturn): I think this one counts as there are two select-able female characters out of the 8 monarchs you can play as, each with their own unique plot lines. 8 - Resident Evil Series - Jill, Clair, for the same reason above. 9 - Nights into Dreams (Saturn) - again, get to play as a boy or girl 10 - Wiz'N'Liz (Genisis) - Play as old man or old woman 11 - Sword of Mana - (GBA) - Begin as boy or girl before their plots mix. 12 - Cadash (Turbo-16) - Play as female priest - not available on the Genesis version :( 13 - Valkyrie Profile Series (PS1 & 2) 14 - Magic Knight Rayearth (Saturn) - ALL female trio (based on the anime series) 15 - FF6 - I think Terra counts as she is our introduction into the world setting and carries the game's opening. It might also be interesting to feature female warriors from (4) Golden Ax (5) Streets of Rage (6) Street Fighter, etc.Especially in Soul Calibur, sometimes both female and male fighters are often individually featured in an independent story mode. Hope the list helps. Loved the episode. I think you got material for at least three more. >)

That whole ending bit about "just make the game good" needs to be sent to gaming devs and gaming writers. Games like Bleed, Metroid Prime, Shantae (the whole trilogy is great), Silent Hill 3 or Dino Crisis would not be better or worse with a male lead, the same as Mario, Sanic, etc. would not be better or worse if the character was female. If your game is based around, "LOOK AT THESE SEXY LADIES" (DOA Beach Volleyball), it's probably going to be ass though. DOA Beach Volleyball with male characters would not be a better game.

I don't know shit about Anita Sarkeesian or the jist of Gamergate.. What I do know is that generally on the internet, anyone who has anything to say about sexism gets dismissed as an SJW that should go back to Tumblr. Which does nothing but prove the point that sexism is an all too major issue in modern society. Yes, video games are sexist. But so are movies, books, the news, advertising, and pretty much everything else. Gamers shouldn't take it personal and most certainly shouldn't go on an anti-feminist rant. That's where the problems start. Progress is good for everyone.
@julioagua

I think that a lot of straight male gamers gets so annoyed about this subject just because they are really afraid to lose their virtual boobs if all this leads to a change in the way videogame companies portrays women. Just look at the commentaries in any article about the new design of women in Mortal Kombat X... half of them are about how ugly and manly Kitana looks and how do they miss the bewbs... I don't think they give a shit about sexism or feminism, they just don't want to lose their eye candy, this "SJW" hate is just an excuse, IMHO.

julioagua I'm not a gamer gater, or someone that plays games just for boobs, but I do find it a shame that the new MK decided to make the characters more realistic. Part of the charm of MK is that it is so over the top.
@LizardkingMario
9 жыл бұрын
happyhappy joyjoy Thanks for proving my point exactly. Digital Intent It's fine to be over the top, but it could and should be just as over the top without sexual objectification. Don't take it personal, but it's just very hard for a man to understand this (I say this as having lived my life up until now as a man). Let me try to put it in perspective: Imagine if 90% of all males in every fighter and alot of other games looked like the "men" from Cho Aniki (minus the drugged up bizarroness), with in addition to that a clearly visible 12 inch+ penis, barely covered by only a bit of cloth down the side and on the tip.

+julioagua 1. What are you talking about, video games were never a guy only thing that was just a stereo type made up by non gamers, it just happens that there are more male gamers that's all. 2. You forget the fact that sex sells, yes I know you might disagree but it's true
@Thebossstage1

Just wondering how are video games sexist? I'd understand if they were real but they're not, they're virtual women, the problem with sjws is that they are extremists who are obsessed with gender politics and pushing their agenda onto people.

I don't know why the sex of the character matters to people. Gameplay and ambiance contribute more than anything in my personal opinion. People like good games. Sounds stupid but with how variable that is, it's amazing how a group of developers could hit that mark given how varied it can be.

One of my favorite games with a female lead is Pooyan for the NES, It's about a badass pig-mom that goes to rescue her piglets from a bunch of wolves armed with a bow and arrows xD. Btw, as a fan of the Valis series who has played all of the series's games, I can confirm that the third game is the best one of the franchise but, personally, I think the Turbografx-CD version is much better than the Genesis one, It has more levels and cutscenes which were also voiced (I've played the Japanese version with an english script to avoid ear-bleeding), this version also has a save feature which comes in very handy as some of the advanced levels are pretty tough and had some more extra stuff. Oh, and I loved the track of Valis 1 at the beggining of the video too.

Not to take anything away from Samus, but I think the earlier games she just looks like a robot to an outsider like me. I didn't find out until later that she was a female character. I never owned the games myself, but had I been a Nintendo guy growing up I am sure I would have gotten Super Metroid. To me though it doesn't really bother me as long as they are a good character, I have my favourites such as Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield because I am a big Resident Evil fan. Lara Croft I liked because at the time it was different to see a major game with a female lead, and I loved the games. I'd like to give a shout out to Blaze Fielding from the Streets of Rage series too, since she was the first female character that I remember playing as. I enjoyed the episode this week guys.
