its sad to think back in late 90s early 2000s there were a number of game chain stores and we as consumers decided to go with one and give our loyalty to one store while the other ones went bankrupt people lost there investments and the company we chose to be loyal to now has a monopoly and shits all over us...way to go Gamestop...reminds me of the American Dream...

@Jyagos1 I'm glad that you replied to my comment. That was exactly the point I was driving at. Gamestop's marketing strategy has always been based on exclusive content and items. However, they are not an organization that offers good customer service. Once the console manufacturers decide to sell games digitally, Gamestop will have to develop a new marketing strategy, negotiate a good contract with the console makers, or close it's doors permanently.

About the "space." It all comes down to seemingly microscopic numbers. Mind you, I worked for Gamestop and don't support what it is as a corporate store to the gaming community in love with all things gaming; retro/modern. But what they mean by "no space on the floor" is that in order to maximize profit every square inch of the store has to provide the max amount of profit. They have found throughout their experience that selling only current generation games is the most profitable option...

@MrPaulvella I'm from Australia as well, but I know how the point system works. Just read the FAQ... Or my post: 10 points per dollar spent on all new games and consoles 20 points per dollar spent on pre-owned games, accessories and consoles 20 points per dollar on traded-in games or consoles Up to 500 points for activating online, completing your profile and establishing your Game Library

...It's a hard pill to swallow but your local shops who can provide you the retro fix, that only a niche crowd wants, are attaining a leftover and small stake in the market of gamers by providing something that the corporate stores have concluded as "not very profitable" and have left behind. It's a very scary and small market for these local guys to try and sell and make it in. But that's we, truly passionate gamers gotta love, respect, and support. These local owners never just open these....

This is a way of companies offering things to customers; without actually doing anything. The low return on points with a high-redemption number means almost no body will even think about trying it. Combined with the fact they all "sell-out" without anyone even getting one....it's a scam. They don't have any of these items. If you *did* have that many points; they'd tell you they're out. They have...nothing.

We have an exact replica of Gamestop in the UK called GAME. My friend knows the girl who works there so he was talking to her and they were talking about how 'the wii was the first game to feature motion control in a tennis game' or something, so I said, well actually, you can do that on the Sega Dreamcast with the fishing controller. The girl looked puzzled so I was like "you know, Dreamcast?" and she shook her head. The shop she works in is called GAME and she doesn't know DC?!?

There is a nice little flea market abot 10 miles or so from where I live. My brother bought a complete Nintendo 64 console plus Gameshark for $9.50 from one of the regulars there. A year later, he bought a complete Genesis set and a spare controller all for $10 from the same woman. Another guy was selling Genesis games for $3 a pop (my brother got Sonic and Knuckles for 3 FUCKING DOLLARS). There is no excuse at all for Gamestop to rip us off like this, especially when other alternatives are superior without a second thought.

.... Remember they've collected data on this from the retailers they bought out like Funcoland, Babbages, Software ETC... so on. For every store they open up for how much money they pay for the lease, it has to be able to be able to collect the highest amount of profit in every square inch of the store. Why do you think they took out that great DVD bargain-shelves they once had a few years back? I'm telling you, these guys are fucking ruthless and calculative like any corporation should've....

I felt the exact same way when I saw this. If you look at their coupon offers, you can get a simple no-bullshit $5 off anything GameStop coupon for 5,000 points, $10 for 10,000 points, etc., And they're asking 42,000+ for Super Mario Bros. For the same amount of points, you could get $40 off your purchase next time you're at GameStop. With the money you save you could buy at least 6 or so fucking copies of SMB on eBay. It just doesn't make any sense.

Judging by the current prices of stuff (in the U.S.) those are wishful thinking prices. A piece of terrycloth towel is 350 coins... An NES game would alone most likely be 1000 - 1500 coins at best from Club Nintendo. The Game and Watch: Ball system is 1500. A more advanced Game Boy would most likely be 2000 to 3000 coins from them, and I couldn't imagine them lasting long since the golden nun chuck gets sold out in less than 24 hours all the time...

Gamestop also stopped selling Original Xbox games, but they still sell PS2 and Gamecube. Thats why i started buying amazon. Better prices in better condition. To get the points in the first place is a huge revenue to begin with. If you want the games on there, eBay, Amazon, hell even Google is your best bet. After a few years of buying and trading at Gamestop when I was an idiot console gamer I only had around 9001+ points that I redeemed for Starfox 64 tags (which I traded my buddy for stuff) so... just putting it into retrospect.

This would be a better idea if they sold uncommon games like NeoGeo AES games or TurboGrafix 16. Heck, get some holy grails and give the people who can't afford them a chance to get them. They're a multimillion dollar company. Some rare games go for $1000. Buy some of these rare gems and get people to shop at GS for a chance to win them. But of course they won't.
