Hey everyone! 👋 I’ve noticed some confusion about the original title, so I’ve updated it to “Gaming with a $9 Router from 2009” based on your feedback. I appreciate all your comments and suggestions! Just to clarify, this video is about testing the router’s performance with modern gaming on (I’ll admit, on a very underpowered laptop), not hacking it to game on its own hardware. Thanks for understanding and for all your support! 😊

Glad I could help out, hope we can work on something else soon 👍 Gotta love the complete unrepeatability of GTA Online where performance fluctuates every second. With the game actively incentivising players changing lobby as a “teleport” even I’ve found it near impossible to get high player numbers consistent for testing. Under 16 though the game runs perfect.

It's always a good day when GHG uploads, especially on a Friday. One thing I will note is how close the old and modern routers were with the Steam download. I would bet with such a low-end processor in the laptop that the true bottleneck was how fast the CPU could decompress the download.
@Terminatar98

Also, I believe that an HFS+ drive would work fine even in Windows, as a Windows host would access the network drive using SMB. It's like how NAS OSes such as Unraid can use filesystems that are traditionally BSD/Linux only such as btrfs or xfs but still be accessible by Linux, MacOS and Windows devices over NFS/SMB.

About the part where you were comparing download speed on Steam between the two routers, couldn't the computer be the bottleneck? I believe I've heard that Steam uses a certain compression that makes it so that the download speed can be drastically reduced with low CPU power. I'm not really sure about it though, this is why I'm posting here

The airport just creates a SMB share of the disc, thus HFS+ should work fine on Windows, just not when you disconnect the disk from the airport and connect it to a Windows pc directly.

21:10 Any file sharing does not involve the file system at the point of sharing. The device (in this case the router) handles FAT32 and HFS+. Clients will see the sharing protocol (eg. CIFS/SMB or AFP) so the filesystem is irrelevant. If you carefully read the answer copilot gave you, you'll notice it ignored any reference you may have had to file sharing in your question, and answered as if you had asked it about directly plugging in a drive to a Mac or Windows machine. Or, if you'd prefer, the "translation layer" you are referring to does exist... it's literally the sharing protocol (likely SMB). It's needed for everything though because you are accessing files over a network - nothing consumer can access a file system directly over the network. So both windows and mac will mount the SMB share and be entirely unaware of the file system that the router sees.

Forgot that CPU and storage speed also influence download speed, that seems to be the case on the Apex download since on the test the Asus router was better but they got the same speed while downloading on Steam. I'm on a cable connection and f i download anything on my old SATA SSD i will not get my max download speed and it will stop from time to time to read/write data, but if i download on my NVME i get max speed without any drops.

5:18 10 gigabit ethernet wouldn't impact gaming at all, full stop. I mean, especially since it looks like your internet connection is only 300mbit, so even having just gigabit ethernet is barely going to do you any favors even under ideal (worst?) conditions. But really, most modern games only use around 5-10mbit at most, and probably a lot less than most of the time. The only conceivable scenario where a gigabit (let alone 10 gig) connection is going to matter is if you have a ton of people playing over the same connection at the same time, and even then you'd probably run into other issues long before bandwidth became one.

I haven't watched the whole video, I got only up to the download speed being the same. But this video is incredibly misleading so far and I am genuinely disappointed. Your computer is also somewhat important when it comes to ping in-game. It's alll diminishing returns unless you step your platform down to a computer that can't even maintain 30fps in most multiplayer titles. Try it for yourself, limit the fps on a hard wired connection on a decent computer (that can actually run games at higher than 30fps) and you will see the ping rising up. That does NOT even account the CPU being absolutely unable to run and process the packets all at the same time. Right now, if you hop on my i5-12600K computer on Overwatch, I usually play on 300fps on 40ms ping, the moment I limit my fps to 30fps, my ping shoots up immediately to 50-55ms ping. And finally, try this on an older computer (like an i5-4460): start downloading a game on your full internet speed and look at the CPU utilization meter in task manager. In other words, please don't step down your platform this much when not testing the hardware itself, because all this was, was another AMD Athlon benchmark.
