Hello Dr. Russ.. I'm a just retired Brazilian Navy Officer who fell in love with airguns a couple of years ago.. I've recently purchased my fifth air gun, a Hatsan FlashPup Wood in 22 cal. Unfortunately all sorts of hunting are ilegal in Brazil so I keep my air rifles busy doing some pest control (mostly pigeons) and target shooting.. Thanks a lot for sharing your life and airguns experiences with some other air gunners.. Can't wait to watch the 2nd part of your hunting adventure in the Rocky Mountains. Greetings from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

All projectiles can actually benefit from less resistance "thinner air"at higher altitudes. Atmospheric pressure is only 1 bar at sea level. The higher you go pressure drops. PCP don't care about about outside air pressure /altitude because of the pressurized tank and metered valve release. Break barrels spring or gas piston rely on ambient air density that is compressed when the piston is released so less air density less velocity for the pellet.

Great Video Sir. Are you aware of a pellet manufacturer that has a higher quality than H &N?
@drsrussandpaula
2 жыл бұрын
Steel Navigator ... thanks for writing ... the German made H&N brand is a made at a great quality.... but it still doesn't mean that it is the most accurate for your air rifle. For example a 22 caliber pellet might be at 22.01 width ... while your gun might shoot better with a 22.05 width. Also, pellet width changes within a tin of any brand. A view from a magnifying scope might find more lead leftover of the stamping process. Competitive shooters not only exam their pellets, wash them, resize them in their own molds and check their skirts... since skirts are actually made even larger than the front portion of the pellet ... catching the most air behind it and gaining greater grip with the rifling.. Some guns are choked and really made for pellets, while others are not choked and better for slugs. Bottom line is that you should try some different brands and weights to determine the most accurate pellet for your gun.

I believe you are only hearing about and accessing a special version of this rifle in 177 caliber in a 24 joule power air gun ... because of laws in Europe that minimize the power of all air rifles ... unless you get a special gun permit to upgrade. fortunately, the Gamo break barrels have a 20 inch long barrel that helps a great deal in accuracy ... which is always your highest priority. I want you to consider clicking onto the small circular photo of me that will give you access to our entire channel... and particularly watch the video .... two different videos on Accuracy... and it might help you watch two videos on pellets ... these might provide you with the info you need ... in light of your situation. great info and food for thought. I have also wondered if high altitude would affect a break barrel. I would say it does as you have fewer air molecules to compress. That sounds like a good physics test question to me. a Chrono at altitude might give us an answer.

@@drsrussandpaula after some research and as a pilot, I recognize that the higher the density altitude, the fewer oxygen molecules you have. fewer molecules mean less compressed pressure. from sea level to 4,000 ft you lose 4% of atmospheric oxygen volume, for every 1,000 ft. from 5,000 ft to 9,000 ft 5-7% of volume for every 1,000 ft. rounded off you have 36% less atmospheric pressure at 8,000 ft. less pressure being expelled into an atmosphere with less resistance, may result in faster velocities and longer range. this will be determined by the moisture content of the atmosphere. performance is enhanced when the atmospheric pressure gradient is decreased along with decreased resistance against the projectile as altitude increases (oxygen, nitrogen, co2, dew point). I hope this makes sense Doc.
@nathanielcohen9890
3 жыл бұрын
@@drsrussandpaula the PCP is a little different. if you fill your bottle at sea level and took it to 8,000 ft., your performance would be greatly enhanced. the bottle has sea level pressure and your density altitude would be 36% less. and if you filled your bottle at 8,000 ft and went to sea level your performance would be decreased by over 1/3. the same if the break barrel is cocked at sea level and fired at 8,000 ft, enhanced performance, and vise versa. the accuracy between the two is probably the result of the speed and weight of the pellet/slug. the rate of barrel twist may enter as a factor, as the PCP twist may be faster to stabilize heavier projectiles. the break barrel has less twist and lower pressures which destabilize pellets at higher velocities at altitude. right twist barrels go right and with fewer air molecules to keep it on target, the pellet drifts right.

@@drsrussandpaula at 4 am this morning I forgot the warning. air bottles on full charge are grenades at high altitudes. they will explode. I never carry more than 200 psi on PCPs while flying because of this. an explosion would rip the plane apart. just think if you were holding it. secondly, compressors don't work very well at higher altitudes and will burn up quickly. most compressor companies have a protocol for filling tanks at higher altitudes. filling your PCP tank to 3,000-4,000 psi and going up in altitude, just maybe the very last thing you do.

I have the Gamo swarm magnum and I noticed something odd with it. If I fire rapidly, after 4-5 shots I get a drop in velocity in the range of 50-100 ft/s. If I wait a while and shoot again, it’s back to normal until I shoot rapidly again. Is this normal for gas ram springers? Is there anything I can do to help prevent this or reduce it other than obviously taking more time between shots?
@natecutter
2 жыл бұрын
Break barrels spring or gas piston rely on ambient air density that is compressed when the piston is released so less air density less velocity for the pellet. The compressed tube (not the barrel) heats up after every shot the hotter the compression tube. Therefore less density of air in compression tube.

@@drsrussandpaula Thank You. I already watched that video twice haha. One thing I was looking for is about 200 yard shot. My friend got Benjamin's Marauder .25 cal. He showed me Hitting tincan around 200 yards. I know it is difficult but he made it haha.

@@DevronSix ... Yes you can hit a target out at 200 yards with a Benjamin Armada .... I know because I have one ... in fact it was one of the 3 air guns I took to the Mountains this past month and whose remaining two videos will be launched over the next 10 days.... the third focusing on the Armada. There are several factors here. Stick with 25 caliber and up. Stick with air rifles that have a minimum of 20 inch rifled barrels. Shoot with no wind..... and Practice, practice , practice.... especially using the tips I share in one of my earlier videos on Accuracy.... I shot competitively for a dozen years and I believe that any air gun shot ... at a target about the size of a tin can .... beyond 85 yards will not guarantee a head shot and will result often .... in wounded critters. Slugs shot from a rifled air gun that is made for slugs might guarantee a head shot out to 100 yards. Skilled shooters wanting to hit and kill prairie dogs at 200 yards... shoot a powder gun in 117 and 223. Keep us in your loop of air gun experiences.....Dr. Russ

I’m having some accuracy issues/ sighting issues on my Gamo(the same you’re using in this video) I can’t seem to be accurate no matter what I try. I want to blame my scope but in my experience if everything else seems to be a problem then I’m usually the problem. Do you approach a break barrel differently than the other types?

Good to hear from you Spectre SE7EN.... Yes all break barrels are held differently that PCP air rifles... it is called the "Artillery" hold or position. Let me suggest that you watch several of my videos which cover the biggest accuracy problems. Click onto the small circular photo of myself to access our entire channel of over 50 videos in chronological order. About 2 months ago, I did a video on 7 Accuracy Tips for Gamo and it covers the Artillery Position... plus a few more tips. Almost a year ago I did a video on Accuracy that covered at least 15 tips... and about that same time, I did two videos on Pellets. The Gamo air rifle can be very accurate if everything is tight on it... so check all of the screws on it and the scope. Secondly, always use a quality, heavy pellet... JSB pellets are the consistent standard to use and they have at least 3 for 22 caliber... not only use the heaviest, but a brand on the tin can that says ... JSB Heavys..... please keep in touch , sharing how you do after using these videos... Dr. Russ

Ricky ... my wife liked it and she does exceptionally well with in one of our videos on "Proof of Gamo's Harvest" I found the scope lacking and added my own to a Gamo Magnum 22 which will be launched in November. However, if you click on the small round photo of me.... you will access our library of videos including the one above... plus one on "Saving Dollars by Purchasing Refurbished". In that video you will find two CP (Center Point Scopes made by Crosman that cost over $ 100 and available for $40 and $60.... buy the more expensive one if you plan to hunt. They are available at Field Supply . com.... Keep us in your loop.... Dr. Russ

I live in Colorado at 7,000 feet on a small homestead (aprox 2 acres). I need an accurate and fairly quiet air rifle for pest control on my property. Mostly birds, squirrels and rabbits. I can shoot up to around 60 yds. I really don't want to spend more than $400 - $500 on a rifle. I am sort of leaning towards a multi-shot rifle. Would this fit the bill or is there other rifles you would suggest for me to look at. Also, is .22 sufficient for my needs or should I go up to something like a .25 cal? I will add that I grew up shooting air guns and "real" handguns/rifles....

Opindependence ... it is good to hear from you ... I would suggest the Umarex or Avenger in 25 calibers ... about $400 and then a hand pump if you are in good shape.... beyond that ... there is a break barrel by Hatsan that comes in 30 caliber only ...I believe called the model 130 ... and then the Gamo multi shots in 22 caliber would be my recommendations for you ... please stay in touch with your decision and hunting success...to follow... @@drsrussandpaula So, based on availability and price I have narrowed it down to these: Benjamin Trail NP XL .25 cal, Hatsan Model 125SN Spring Combo .25 cal, Gamo Swarm Magnum G2 Multi .22 cal. Would you have a preference between these? also, am I missing any others? I like the .30 cal, but I want and scope and that would add additional cost. Thanks!

@@OpIndependence Somehow ... your questions and comment slipped thru the cracks ... I apologize .... In the event that you havent ordered an air gun yet...all 3 choices are good ones .... I would go for the Hatsan Model 125SN in 25 caliber.... hopefully you will find it available in refurbished section of Hatsan ... Please let us know how you do ... Dr. Russ

What type of pellet are you using in the gamo?
@drsrussandpaula
3 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Hembree.... it is good to hear from you.... I use a lot of JSB King and JSB King Heavy's because I find that the heavier pellets are more accurate and they provide the most energy at the target. It is important that you use the same pellets for practice as you use for competition or hunting. JSB pellets also have some pellet lube on them... but I typically put more on so that there is a good seal between the pellet and the rifling. Click onto the small circular photo of me to gain access of our whole library of videos....and review two on pellets and two on Accuracy... Dr. Russ

Are the air pistons not sealed? I thought they were just air springs, not using ambient air? I'm pretty sure I'm correct, because igp means inert gas piston, meaning nitrogen or some other inert gas, not ambient air
