About Gandhi Ashram, Basudevpur, Haldia
Not many people know of it but this is the place where the Mahatma spent some time during his visit to Midnapore in 1946. The three-acre plot was the family property of noted freedom-fighter, Kumar Jana popularly known in the area as "Sutahata-ar Gandhi". An ardent follower of Bapu, he spent his last few years with Vinoba Bhabhe. After his death in 1975, his wife Charu Shila Jana, a freedom fighter in her own rights, leased out the land for the construction of a Gandhi ashram. The responsibility was handed over to a non-governmental organisation known as the Haldia Kalyan Parsad. It is like a visit to wonderland as one enters the ashram. A large pond at the centre of the compound is bordered by 45 coconut palms. The buildings across the pathway, house a short-stay shelter for women, an orphanage and a home for deaf and dumb children. The short-stay shelter has 25 inmates, most of them, women deserted by their husbands and widows with no place to go. These women take care of the children in the orphanage, look after the deaf and dumb children and do other chores while awaiting rehabilitation. Some of them learn stitching and weaving, trades they can use to sustain their lives after leaving the shelter. Some also run a restaurant, ''Ruchira'' on the busy Haldia-Mecheda Road. The ''orphanage'' has 100 children who come from various backgrounds. Some are brought there by the panchayats of the surrounding villages and the remaining are sent through government agencies.
