I actually liked the Wind waker Ganon fight of all, because he adapts. If you do the rolling backslash to counter his leaping strikes after awhile he'll start stepping away or guarding his back using his sword and he'll start dodging Zelda's light arrows before he smacks the Z out of her.

Oh hell yeah, Rule of Cool is always in full effect, at least for the part about walking towards enemies slowly, If it's a duel boss, I'm always gonna try to approach the fight the same way as them, same for taking damage to make the fight look/feel better if I know I can take it. Dorf' isn't the type of guy (Or doesn't seem to be.), but I do wish that if that was the Devs intention that if you spent too much time running away he'd just wait for a while with his sword planted to show he was waiting for you to accept your fate instead of running away (Hard to say that when he put the barrier up in the first place so you couldn't.), Dialog midfight has happened before (The King of Ikana in MM) and same for small cutscenes, so something like that to show it would've made the fight more memorable, at least for me.

For me, the Ganondorf's back story has always been weekest area. They always keep it so surface level. Wind Waker tried but they never asked the real important questions. Why were his people stuck in a desert? Hyrule is a big place. Couldn't they have just moved somewhere else? I suspect the reason why these questions are never brought up is because they'd probably make the kingdom of Hyrule look bad. That said, it seems that as of BoTW they are finally open to telling stories that don't make Hyrule royalty appear so perfect. From the Sheikah being forced to hide their advanced technology because of unfounded fears to King Rhoam's poor treatment of Zelda while she was struggling to unlock her sacred powers.

By the time he's a fully grown adult, he's basically Demise 2.0. Heck, he got so much spared despite the countless opportunities to kill him, Rosalina even could have left him in space to find his way home on his own, yet she was so pitty with him that she let even him return to the Mushroom Kingdom. Ganondorf on the other hand, compared to Bowser, isn't just a Wizard, he is a King of an Demon and Monster Army, a Master-Demon that has Powers that are so great that he could easily challenge the Gods, and compared to Bowser he doesn't give up until he is destroyed. I like how he spouts all this stuff about his noble motivation to take the land of Hyrule for his people, and yet at the time of WW, he is the only one who still lived beneath the waves. His character in TWW is that he is incredibly unreliable, narcissistic and egotistical. In OOT he never does anything for his people pre and post timeskip, instead what we see him do is brainwash and enslave the Gerudo and leaving them in the desert. The Gerudo also don't really care about Hyrule's prosperity, they are fine with living in the desert and they know how to live there. They aren't oppressed or anything. as someone who also loves Ganondorf a lot and has for many years...I actually agree. I too find most of his fights underwhelming for how cool Ganondorf himself is and how majestic his buildup tends to be (I would willingly have the children of the final sequence of OoT), and I think about it often and have for years. The only thing I'm actually ok with is Dead Man's Volley, just not as the whole fight. TPO actually did it right in that department. All they need to do is not make Ganon slow and sluggish (Beast Ganon OoT and Ganondorf Sword Fight from TP) and actually press an offense on you and it'll be good. I want Ganondorf to kick my ASS. I want him to smack me around like the little bitch I need to know I am. But it just never happens and it's incredibly disappointing. In my spare time sometimes I just daydream about "what if OoT's fight met expectations?" (btw if you want a better version of that fight see the OoT manga), and how I'd rework it. Though I'd like to throw out that Ganondorf's...odd behavior in TP could be interpreted as arrogance, he doesn't think you deserve his "all out", he seeks to intimidate as he often does, unfortunately such tactics don't work on someone as determined and fearless as Link. I too will boycott Nintendo if Ganondorf doesn't meet expectations in TotK, and I'm honestly having a hard time deciding if I want to go to him right off the plateau (sky version) or wait till endgame, I don't want him to accidentally be too easy, but considering how mechanically diverse and mailable the BotW engine is and how good the Calamity Ganon (not Dark Beast) fight was mechanically, combine that with Ganondorf and we're good. I have some faith. However I do think they want to keep Zelda accessible so we won't get a truly ass-kicking Ganondorf fight for a long while I think. the worst part is...Smash isn't helping

I haven't played Ocarina but part of me feels like the tennis is mostly underwhelming because the technology was lacking. It felt super engaging against Wind Waker's Phantom Ganon. You could almost feel the orb's impact when deflecting it, and he continuously speeds it up to make timing more difficult. Ocarina's version looks so lame in comparison. It's probably in large part due to how slow the orb constantly moves, but it just doesn't look very dangerous. There's no strong feel when hitting it like with Wind Waker. It's also worse when you remember that game's Phantom Ganon used the exact same attack in his fight. The entire Ganondorf fight is only comprised of one attack from a previous boss. Mind you it makes sense for Phantom Ganon to be a sort of preview to the real fight, but still the man has the Triforce of Power; there's so much more they could've done.

Argue for it? I've got a pretty low opinion of the games combat in general (Lots of moves you can get as far as sword techs go, never a real reason to use them outside of the Darknut and Redead Knights paralyzing you.), the fights leading up to Ganondorf himself are fine, minus horseback, but the fight is nothing special. Most of his attacks deal low damage, and will knock Link to the ground, giving plenty of space for recovery time considering there isn't really a penalty to it in any Zelda game, but half a heart of damage getting bass boosted to a full heart of damage isn't much on Hero Mode, stacking it with the Ganondorf Amiibo if you shell out the money or just buy a card online might make it more 'stressful' if you only pick up Hearts from Dungeons and don't collect any containers, but he doesn't really do much. Keep hammering him while he guards? A pretty easy to avoid attack when he'll always flip behind you, just roll forward, you're good. I'm not bothered by it being a simple fight because most of them are easy in the game, and Combat and difficulty aren't the main selling points, but the area for it even feels anticlimactic compared to other fights; Just duking it out with him in some empty field while thunder and lightning pops off half ominously, the prior fights like Phantom Zelda were alright, and Beast Ganon was legitimately a fun fight thanks the the mechanics of it being simple but calling back to something you honestly might not've done since dealing with the Gorons. Wind Wakers feels climatic enough and none of his attacks will knock Link on the ground unless you try to pop off with a Jump attack, they deal a solid heart of damage (At least in Hero Mode) and come out quick meaning if you for some reason, aren't locked on or get caught mid attack, you might lose two or three, still not threatening or much of a challenge, but the fight stays engaging and mobile for most of it because of Zelda's arrows forcing him to dodge, and the attacks being launched by both sides having a prompt that'll keep things moving. Both beat Laser Tennis/Deadmans Volley, but besides the Super version you have to use the Spin attack on to not get scraped on the knee by, it's pretty eh; Ganon saves the fight on a cinematic level, and it's a cool moment, with a Kamehameha at the end courtesy of Zelda, but TP's Ganondorf fight at the end is pretty much water-soup.

I think Nintendo tried to redo the "A Link to the Past tennis fight" which works way better in 2D than 3D. Really should've just dropped the idea after OOT but I give them credit for trying to make the fight dynamic with the falling floors but Ganondorf clearly needed something more. You skim it but I'd aruge the OOT Ganon fight is actually quite good. Not only does it achieve being super cinematic but also taking away the player's main weapon in the master sword forces the player to do what the game tried to do the whole game. Make you use weapons that aren't the master sword (doesn't totally succeed but it tries). I've seen people use the hookshot, bow (no light arrows), light arrows, bombs, etc. It's actually pretty cool, could've been fleshed out more but it makes the fight more interesting than the rest of the series.

OOT has the best end-boss section in the series because the totality of it perfect, and believe it or not I've seen a lot first time players struggle with it, either because they mess up the game of tennis or because they miss with light arrows (the hitbox is surprisingly narrow) too many times and run out of magic. The tower escape is a masterwork in building tension and the second part of the confrontation turns everything up to 11 forcing you to use other weapons and turning the core of combat on its head by rewarding the player for not targeting him because you can easily roll between his legs, it’s not the most sophisticated mechanically but it’s actually designed and presented the best of any of the fights in the series. The music and atmosphere more than makes of for the predictablbilty of it. The other fights attempt to be more interesting mechanically but fall short in design and pacing imo.

I agree actually to an extent. I don't dislike the Ganon fights. I think they have great atmosphere, but I think the core issue boils down to theatrics. Whenever he is in a game he is always the final boss and the developers try to have a down to earth encounter for them. With almost every pther boss in a Zelda game their fights are tailored around figuring out their weaknesses and exploiting them (usually with a dungeon item) to deal proper damage whole also navigating their boss arenas. They are made to be more puzzle like. The 3 Majora forms are a really engaging an interesting final boss because they could just go crazy with him. Not a lot of puzzle solving put each form is so different from the last that ot doesnt matter. This isn't the case with Ganon. His fights are supposed to be personal man to man fights. But they also come with an expectation. Nintendo doesn't experiment with them, so they lose that creative edge that other bosses have because that would run the risk of sacrificing Ganondorf's preconceived image. They can't gonall out like they do for bosses that aren't Ganondorf. And without that creativity how do you make an engaging man to man fight? Well you would have to make it challenging. Keep the plauer on their feet and thinking, but the issue is that Zelda is rated E. It has to be approachable for kids. So he is kind of screwed here. But that’s all I have to say. Good video 👍 Side note: how dare you break the oot tradition of not playing magic tennis with a bottle. Tsk tsk. Lol

This video was hilarious and you made some great points! My only counter argument is that the fights seem underwhelming because you know what to do. Maybe im biased, but honestly majoras mask has the most consistently engaging boss and final boss fights in the series imo, mostly because theres no real formula to fighting the bosses, you can kill pretty much all of them with any item that does damage, especially odolwa where you can kill him with bombs if you really want.

Odolwa is such a good boss fight! Playing the 3DS version first then playing the original N64 version is a night and day difference. It was like a struggle between 2 warriors, one big, the other small, both equipped with a sword and shield. I struggled and almost nearly died twice, but prevailed with probably one of the most satisfying Zelda dungeon boss experience I've ever had, especially for it being the first one.

Ganondorf never fails with presentation (super villain 101) but the fights always paint an image of him being weak, slow, and predictable when the lore contradicts this. The only thing that would've made the TP Ganondorf swordfight perfect is if the game made the sword techniques mandatory to find and then incorporated them into the fight. The music and atmosphere is amazing in that fight. The slowness of it is a bit underwhelming, but if the player is aggressive instead of defensive, Ganondorf tends to move more, making it less obvious. I don't dislike the tennis thing in OOT, I just also feel like there could be more variation in it. Ganondorf does one other big attack where you either need to shoot a light arrow at him, or do a spin attack to deflect all the orbs from the big attack at once. However, if using the biggoron sword, one may end the fight before he even does that attack, which is lame. So more variation like that big attack would be sufficient to improve that fight imo.

I saved the final Calamity Ganon fight until after I had done all the sidequests and shrines and gotten good gear in BotW, and it went so stupid fast and easy that I thought "okay that can't REALLY be it". Then Dark Beast Ganon appeared and I had time to: take photo of Bow of Light for compendium, take photo of Dark Beast Ganon for compendium (multiple photos because I didn't like the first one), get on horse and run around firing bomb arrows at Dark Beast with Zelda yelling at me before I realized "oh y'know what I probably need the frikkin' Bow of Light", run back to get the Bow, then just got spoon-fed the rest of the fight. I was MAD, like I did all the other stuff and prepared all this gear and food and the game itself was hyping me up FOR THAT???

I think you'll be genuinely pleased with TotK's Ganondorf. They went so far above and beyond any zelda game to deliver a soul crushing fight. I won't spoil anything except this, Ganondorf does what only the greatest video game bosses do, he breaks the rules of the game through the 4th wall. You'll know when you see what he can do, the fight itself is a little basic, but the mechanics involved are out of this world badass. I sincerely hope you're pleased, because I am. Especially after I was so let down by BotW. That fight is just pure ass.

Ganondorf's fight in Ocarina of Time was clearly made to emulate the battles against his prototype of Aganimh in A Link to the Past... the problem was that Aganimh was on the SNES and even then he at least changed things up by teleporting, creating ghostly doubles, and using several different attacks, including lightning bolts that had to be dodged and spheres that broke into cluster-bursts when struck. OoT Ganondorf is clearly just one part a retread of Phantom Ganon and one part a blatant warm-up for the true final fight against Ganon.

That is how Link did it in my headcanon. It goes to show how important music is in video games. All these fights feel epic the first time we do them. But those tennis match clips with no music had me cracking up lol.

The thing these boss fights seem to have in common is that they rely on very basic tools of the game. This mostly means the sword, shield and sometimes the bow, though obviously in TP you also use your beast form and horse (aspects you seemed to like). The examples you cited of good bosses were arguably bosses that used the most interesting tools in the game, with 3 of them focusing on using tools to move about in unique ways. So it seems like you want a Ganon / Ganondorf battle is one with a decent amount of variety and possibly one that uses a variety of tools from the game. That to me describes the Zant boss battle, so I'm curious how you feel about that boss fight? I'm not sure I particularly enjoy the "here's all the past bosses / levels" style, but I do like the idea of having to use a variety of skills / tools. The commonly cited best example of this is the Mr Freeze battle in Arkham City. My pitch for a great Ganon battle would be one that has 3 phases. Phase 1 would have you have to hit him maybe 10 times and there'd be a variety of ways to either reach him or bring him to you. If you try using the same technique twice in a row it's more difficult (though not impossible). E.g. if the Spinner was one of the tools, the path initially would be doable, if you tried it a second time it would be tough, 3 times it would be very hard, 4 times you'd need near perfect reactions, 5 times just straight up impossible. That way the easiest strategy (but not the only strategy) is to use a variety of techniques. Phase 2 would use your horse (or whatever transport you use in the game). Phase 3 would be a very difficult melee combat. Phase 1 and Phase 2 could have their orders swapped, I'm not sure which would be better. What do you think? I'm also curious how you felt about the BOTW boss fights, including the Ganon fight. You seemed to imply you weren't a fan in this video, but I can't see any videos on your channel where you've discussed them.

Sad to say ToTK Dorf hasnt changed much if you know what youre doing. They were this close too, all they had to do was make all non Master Sword weapons ineffective against him INCLUDING THE BOW. The fact you can just zone him out and delete his health bar without actually engaging with the fight using the bow is just so dumb. He at least doesnt stunlock in the 3rd phase but now he doesnt even have clones for pressure anymore and he still takes headshot damage. That aside this Ganondorf gets a whole lot of hype in the story for being a powerful sorceror stronger than ever only for 90% of his kit to be swing sword unga bunga which isnt bad on its own but kinda weird considering the context of this Ganondorf. Seriously you already get the MS automatically by the last (mostly cinematic) phase of this fight if you don't already have it, why not just give the MS a little earlier and keep Ganondorf's traditional immunities to all other dmg? I don't get it. His 3rd phase dodges are legitimately really cool though just a shame you can easily make this fight really lame if you don't restrict yourself. Alternatively maybe only arrows fused with Light Dragon and Ancient mats should be effective against him as a neat callback to Silver and Light arrows. Something at least to limit arrow spam.

This could (and should, imo) really be a larger conversation on Zelda's lacking approach to combat. Having recently replayed Twilight Princess, it's honestly embarrassing for a developer of Nintendo's caliber how "fake" enemy encounters feel throughout. The 3D games before maybe Skyward Sword, and even BotW to some degree, rely on cinematic flair to a detriment. It was understandable for Ocarina of Time, as it laid the foundation for 3D games and the lock-on camera as a whole. But, it should've evolved the moment it hit the next generation of consoles. Playing Elden Ring, for me, has been such a revelation as to how "sword and shield" combat can be authentically deep and cinematic in tandem.

For the most part I agree with you on this, when it comes to Ocarina of Time... I was expecting more from it, I wanted Link and Ganon to clash blades with each other and battle to the death resulting in Ganon turning into his Beast Form. But I was disappointed, and then they had that E3 trailer that showed off Link and Ganon dueling, and I thought to myself; why wasn't this in the Game? but it was cool to watch, nonetheless. But then when Wind Waker had that cool boss fight with Ganondorf, it was pretty epic. especially the lead up to the end fight, I do see your point on how there wasn't really much to the combat when it came to the battle itself, just by having a few gimmicks in the end. But overall, it was great, for how the combat is in Zelda Wind Waker it does work for the most part. And then Twilight Princess, I got to say it was epic. This was what I think of when I think of Link battling Ganon. The 3 first boss battles were a very nice touch, and I thought that after the second fight it was over which would've made me say: "Are you fuckn' series? He was holding a Sword! Why didn't he Use it!?" But in the end, they delivered, especially the horseback scenario where they implemented horse combat in the game, it was fun, interesting, and cool. And the final sword duel, this is where I gotta disagree with ya man, it was what I was wanting and expecting to happen. You don't really have to wait for him to strike first, you can strike at him or dodge his moves using the moves set to your advantage.. You can parry or dodge his blows using whatever methods you see fit. The sword clash were you mash A was a nice touch. And the fight and scenery in general screams: EPIC FANTASY SHIT... it's great, what makes this fight all the more poetic is the fact that you use the very same final blow taught to you by the Deceased Hero of Time... it's great man, come on. But yeah, I wanna see Tears of the Kingdom Deliver on this, and they gotta do it right. Thanks for reading this, I know its a long ass rant but who cares anyways? thanks

I think Sykward swords finale with the horde battle, Ghirahim and Demise is just epic with the atmosphere, music and stakes. Demise doesn't let you run too far. Although Ghirahim's second/third phases are a little underwhelming because he does the walk menacingly tactic rather that teleporting or bombarding link with daggers or dashing like in his earlier fights.

i think twilight princess ganondorf only needs one singular thing to make it complete, and thats him using the same attack he did against the sage in that one banishment cutscene. it first of all creates a challenge of trying to see if you have to dodge to the side or can jump attack him like his other attack. it can also be rewarding because you can chain it into a dodge-attack. it also gives him more movement options to get to you. it also would be really fucking cool to see him grab you and do a bunch of damage like he did in a cutscene

Maybe it's just cause as a kid I'd mindlessly swing and thst csrried on into adulthood where I could counter Ganondorfs moves, but I never really found the Ganondorf duel at the end of Twilighit Princess to be too boring because never wanted to stay still. I loved clashing blades, baiting him to attack snd evading and using various skill to kill him. Yeah it was still kinda easy, but it definitely more cinematic. Though I do wish he attacked more.

I only allow myself to use the chance during the 3rd phase on repeat playthroughs. It feels pretty inconsistent when you're able to hit him and not, but it does make Ganondorf seem like more of a threat when you have to do so much to land a hit. It just sucks that you're able to run away for so long and one of two attacks he does from a distance lets you counter it to skip a whole phase.

What I like is how up until the final boss fight in wind waker, ganondorf is just way stronger than you. the thing is that, well... Right before ganondorf fights you, he loses the triforce. He doesn't have the triforce of power anymore, you can finally actually fight him. The final boss of wind waker isn't really a climactic battle to save the world like the others. Instead it is you fighting a man who has lost what he has spent his whole life working towards and has finally snapped, and he is GOING to take you down with him. For Twilight Princess, that Ganondorf makes a bit more sense to be more cowardly. His plan was found out before he could truly enact it in OoT, and he likely saw whatever happened to the gerudo (we know they survived being four swords adventure but they WERE completely driven out of the desert in Twilight Princess), and he was likely afraid and less sure of his power than the Ganondorf who ruled Hyrule for 7 years and actively EARNED the triforce of power. It makes sense that Twilight Princess Ganondorf would be a lot more hesitant and more manipulative and in the background rather than doing stuff himself.

i feel like part of the issue arises because ganondorf fights make very light use of items. a lot of the excitement from good zelda bosses comes not from the act of hitting them with your sword, but from how you have to use your items in a cool and interesting way to make them vulnerable. of course a challenging sword fight could fix the issue too, but given series precedent i dont think its reasonable to expect that anytime soon lol. but yeah i feel like a ganondorf fight that encourages creative item use would end up feeling a lot more engaging. and funny enough, i think theyve already found a way to do this. by getting rid of your sword like they did in oot, you might actually have to find interesting ways to get around his defenses using items in unconventional ways. i don't think oot really sold this idea too well cause your toolset isn't very conducive to that sort of fight (megaton hammer is really your only option unless you're absolutely loaded with deku nuts, plus you may have the biggoron sword anyway), but the concept would make for a much more interesting fight. and then, like oot, you could get your sword back later in the fight, signaling that the tide has turned, which could emotionally transform a simple swordfight into more of a victory lap to empower the player.

The more games I play, I've gotten a stronger impression that a higher emphasis on cinematic presentation is nearly mutually exclusive from mechanical challenge in gameplay. For instance, The Wind Waker's final boss environment might be a lot more difficult to take in and easier to ignore if your brain is more engaged in stricter dodge/punish timing. Personally, it's like my brain is being pulled into 2 directions that just don't overlap. Genuinely asking if anyone else feels similarly or it's just me.

See the thing is, is that most of who have this problem (myself included) have been playing games for at least a decade, we’ve been playing games like Megaman, Dark Souls, Cuphead, etc. Nintendo makes their games easy most of the time so that everyone can enjoy it and not die 60 times, but it comes at the cost that most of the the time the final bosses are just as easy as Gohma, with a few exceptions(Raven Beak). Even Calamity Ganon is like this. He’s only difficult if you skip the story. As for atmosphere though, I think they always nail that. Despite your thoughts I absolutely adore the Twilight Princess fight. After all these phases you just get Link and Ganon in the ring, no tricks and no items, just blades clashing, Ganondorf’s walk intimidates you, do you act? What will he do? The classic standoff, he blocks most of your attacks, the sword clash, the MUSIC. Yea it might be easier then walking the dog in practice, but MAN is it fun to watch.

I think an important thing to understand is Ganondorf is a fraud in away. he is a cunning trickster, the king of the desert thieves, and a sorcerer. he has brute force sure, he has skills sure, but would you directly put yourself in harms way v/s the one or two of the only weapons in the world designed to kill you? That would be stupid! and honestly, TP Ganondorf lacks experience. He never got to face the hero of time, instead his rebellion was cut short by the sages, so it makes sense he would be wary of the blade of evils bane and the absolute menace that TP Link honestly is, but in general Ganondorf has always used tricks, he hates fighting directly if he doesn't have to, he will swear false fealty use puppets and monsters, clones magic and any manner of power he can long before direct physical conflict.
