Today on Mako Products - Superlok TV we discuss the most forgotten and ignored mandatory installation tool which is the infamous tube fitting gap gauge. This important tool is often left in the tool box, never to see the light of day as installers think they can feel when a fitting is tight. This, however, is not correct.
Many factors impact how it feels to install a tube fitting. From tubing diameter and wall thickness to any type of lateral stress on the connection at time of install will cause the fitting to have a different torque characteristics. This guessing game has led to an average of 5-10% of tube fittings leaking after install.
It's for these reasons why we encourage installers to use a gap gauge, be it the traditional style or with the Superlok i-Fitting's built-in gap gauge. Doing so will help improve safety and prevent extra work in re-securing fittings that could have been done correctly the first time.
