At 1:30, it should say NC (Normally Closed). When the switch is by itself (door open), the switch is closed, turning the light on. When the magnet is next to it (door closed), the magnet opens the circuit, turning the light off.

Thanks. Trying to get ideas for my work van (u haul) so I don't drive of with the door open. I like this idea

You mean on the van door? It should work, especially since it's all battery powered. The little $1 flashlight from WalMart comes with three batteries. The LED light illuminates with just three batteries. So I just use two and wire it so the third battery isn't needed. Once the batteries die (takes a long time), I find that Lithium batteries last a super long time and are worth the additional cost. Plus I've never had a Lithium battery leak (yet). Hope things work for your van!

Glad it's helpful. It has helped both my wife and me to notice that we left the garage door open. Especially when we've unloaded a lot of groceries and brought them in through the front door.

Thanks, Terrell! Yours is the most simple idea I've found on KZitem.

Thanks, Pat. I tried several things before coming up with this simple solution.

just checking, you say use a N/O reed switch but isn't a N/O contacts are usually normally open, closing when a magnetic field is present. So light would be ON when the switch and magnet are together? So it should be a N/C switch. And when magnet is present then light would be off?

Thanks, Al - You are absolutely correct! Good catch! It should say "N/C" at 1:30 for a normally closed switch. When the magnet comes next to it, the magnetic field changes the switch, opening it, so the light goes off (and stays off, as long as the door is closed). I bought double pole switches, as you can see at 1:30, NC/NO/COM.

@@TerrellWSmith Your welcome, thought I was going crazy. Oh wait, too late, I am already lol :) Still I loved the video. I have it all set up, just waiting for the reed switch I ordered. I never played around with LED's before but it seems they also have a neg/positive side? I put battery one way It works ,reverse leads & it doesn't. Is that a fluke? Any ideas? Thank you.
