The College is staffed by priests of the diocese and lay teachers. It was founded as a seminary in 1892 to help educate priests for the diocese. From the beginning it also provided general secondary education for boarders and day pupils. In recent years day-pupils are in the majority.
St. Joseph's College was founded by Bishop Healy of Clonfert and Mgr. James Madden. He founded it at Cartron and supplied the initial funding. The college's location was moved to Esker, Athenry in 1894, then to the Pines, Creagh in 1901, and finally to Garbally in 1923 due to expansion. Garbally received numerous gifts from two more brothers from the same Madden family in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s: Fr. John Madden of Killimor and Dr. George Madden of London. One instance of their magnanimity is the Science and Study halls that are in place today. The additional dining hall and classrooms in the new extension were made possible by Dr. Madden's legacy.
The Clancarty family, also known as "la Poer Trench," is the other family whose past is intertwined with ours. The Trench family arrived in Ireland in the 1690s and made Garbally their home. One family member married Power, also known as "la Poer," in 1732, and combined their names to create a new one. The Powers were related to the McCarthys of Munster, and a later family member assumed the title of Earl of Clancarty upon becoming an Earl as a result of the Act of Union.
In 1819, Richard, the 2nd Earl, oversaw the construction of the current residence. The grounds were completely landscaped at the same period.
In 1855, more additions were made. The family's wealth dwindled in the early years of this century, and in 1922 Garbally was sold to the Clonfert diocese to serve as the new location of St. Joseph's College. The cost came to £6,750.
