Hi. I am hoping you guys can help me solve a 50 year old mystery... My dad is a keen gardener and when I was young he was a chef, before going on to teach at a college. He taught me all I know about cooking and he had a greenhouse and lovely herb garden that taught me about growing my own fruit, veg and herbs. I have been growing my own for years now. So, I've seen all the usual creepy crawlies you would expect in a typical British garden, but there was an encounter when I was around eight years old that shocked me and it's still unexplained... I was sent out to the herb garden to collect some mint and I froze.... There was a massive creature in the herb garden and it wasn't like anything I had ever seen , or encountered in all these years since. It was oblong, slimy and a luminous pea green, with what resembled a bright yellow petticoat skirting the ground, about half an inch in height but it's total size was around that of a household brick. In fact, I remember we had a few bricks at the bottom of the garden my dad kept for anchoring strawberry nets, and this creature was at least the same width, but a little taller, and longer. I ran back to the house to summon my dad, but by the time we reached the spot I had seen it, the strange creature was nowhere to be seen - there was a gap under the fence it must have slipped under. Was it a giant slug? It wasn't a caterpillar as it was far too large and was completely smooth and shiny... No interconnecting sections.... It moved at a slowish pace, like a slug, but smoothly, not undulating like a caterpillar. I would be delighted if someone could enlighten me as to what this creature actually was as it's intrigued me for many years. Thank you!

A giant beetle larvae? They could be fairly big and sluglike.
