Hi,I worked on several fishing boats that had Gardner gearboxes they had an hand driven pump in the wheelhouse that activated an hydraulic cylinder on the gearbox to go from ahead to astern, removing the muscle power required to operate it.when we adjusted the clutches we used a spring gauge to measure the resistance on the operating lever either way.cheers Roly🇬🇧.

Hello from Picton New Zealand, I have a 6LXB in an old commercial boat I recently 12 months ago, the strong-arm gear change-system, currently having work done after I decided to get a professional service rather than ruin a great old engine.... they discovered yesterday there was a crack in an inspection plate on the reduction box, on opening this today the retaining nut was loose...had been sliding up and down the shaft causing wear and tear, seems someone had done some previous work on it and not done it properly, they have disconnected the prop-shaft, slid it back and are currently trying to remove the reduction box to get it back to the workshop...to remove the shaft do the bearings etc...they will need to either rebuild the damaged thread on the shaft or replace it with another if we can find one, a new gear box is simply of the question cost-wise...then they will sort any issues re the retaining nut and bearings, the mechanic has been training on Gardeners but not done a lot of time and is being advised by a local Gardiner expert, he is hopeful to be able to simply remove the reduction box if the shaft is not part of the gear box, he didn't think it was from his diagrams as there are two separate oil sumps, his diagram is not great to be honest, I must say happy to see there are separate shafts in your diagrams that the drive-shaft in the reduction box to the prop-shaft is a separate unit to the gear-box so think he is bang on in his educated assumption, thanks for your videos

Hi Joe, we are looking for a gearbox to fit behind our Kromhout Gardner 6LW in a 2nd world war era tug , is it still for sale?

To free the pistons, you must put diesel down into the bores. Perhaps you will be lucky! For lubricating oil in engine and gearbox, we recommend SAE30. It is best to email me: tangent.gardner@gmail.com.

Hi Joe, your videos are grate and very informative, I just brought a 1962 timber boat with a awesome old Gardner in her. Do you know what the running temperature for these old gearbox?

Thank you very much for this video. I have a marinised 6LW with a 2UC in a 40ft 1964 timber boat. I have always been greatly concerned about how hard it is to get my gear to go ahead and astern and wanted to "fix" the issue. Im much happier now to know I can just manhandle it into gear with the clunks the way it's supposed to be done

Not boring at all Joe thank you for going over the Gardner gearbox i have been looking forward to it and now have some under standing of how mine works . I do have one question for you and that is when i put my 2uc 2/1 in reverse it makes a loud wine but when in neutral and FWD not a sound could this be the thrust bearings on the lower reduction drive shaft if so can parts be found ?? Thank you for the video once again .

Not boring at all. I've studied similar old transmission drawings in books I have but your explanation helps make sense out of it much more than just looking at the books.

Thank you sir, very interesting as often wondered about these big Gardner gearbox's. They all whine going astern. I take it that the thrust of the prop is against that bottom drive of the gearbox and pushes and pulls the vessel through the engine beds.

Thanks for this Video. Looking Forward for more. I was told, that the 2UC does Not Like to run in nutrial for to Long because the oelpump is not working. It only pumps the oel through the Gear when it is in Forward or Reverse. Is that so? Is it right, to mesure the oellevel when the gearbox is operating (in Forward)? And not when it is in nutrial? My one is singing in Reverse too. I am told that is normal. Thanks again for the Film about the gearbox. Cheers hans

Yes, your information is correct. We normally dip the main oil when the box is in gear, but the reduction when out.

I just bought a Gardner with a 2UC 2/1... i am yet to align the motor and box in my boat. My question to you is that mine isn’t as hard to select ahead and astern... does that mean the G/Box is junk or an adjustment issue? Thanks for the video! Very informative! Cheers, Sam, Sydney Aus

Judy Fisk...My 2UC 2:1 reduction does exactly the same thing...foward and neutral are smooth but reverse does wine a bit. So I too would like to ask Joe the same question lol. Mine makes that lovely clunk going in and coming out of foward gear also. I too have a near new gearbox in storage as I have simply become a collector of Gardner’s for spare parts lol. Thank u so much joe. That was not boring at all very informative as usual. Such a wonderful thing u are doing, sharing long forgotten knowledge about these wonderful engines and gearboxes with a new and current generation who long to support them as u have. Thank u so much 👍

very good, I am an automotive, motorcycle geek, trying to learn a new avenue to me, wanting to eventually build a narrowboat to retire on canals, curently live in states, but looking at transmissions & engines, as still unsure, but the monkey wrench is I want hybrid power with vintage engine, & would like to use electric & engine power if necessary at same time? my thoughts are if in rough water, that will help make progress? and can cruise on electric only some days to save on fuel, & can cruise on engine for charging, or when I want to hear engine. so far some of the Gardner & Samofa s108 are my favorites. but no idea yet which way to go
