The historic center dates back to the year 1000 AD. It is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Christianity. Over the centuries, Monte Sant’Angelo has been visited by knights, believers, travelers, popes and busybodies. The city rises on a peak of Gargano and it plunges into the Adriatic sea facing Jerusalem, where crusaders completed their journey.
The main spot is a sanctuary cave, and it makes me think that caves are a frequent symbol in the history of man, from the Gospel to Leonardo Da Vinci, through Plato. Caves are the archetype of a refuge for humans; they are both homes and prisons. It is up to us to choose how to live and when to get rid of it.
