This watch is definitely not a toy, but a serious tool made for those wanting to take their training to the next level. Love the look and it's simplistic display, love the fact that Garmin eliminated all the unnecessary stuff and made a very solid and functional tool for serious athletes. I'm very happy with mine!

I just bought the solar version last week after mulling over for weeks. As a long-time G-shock fan, this watch was such a pleasant surprise--more like a shock. Feature packed into a nice form factor (although a little too much plasticky) at a reasonable price. I know that Forerunner series may have fit my profile, but I wanted a watch that would last me more than 3 years (all these color smart watches seem to last about as much). Once again, highly recommended for people who like hiking to make use of all the ABC functions and GPS tracking. Get the solar version for that ridiculous battery life.

HR is done on most of these watches by light measuring the frequency of blood passing by the sensor. Unless you use the ECG on Watch Series 4.This means the accuracy can always vary depending on the day conditions etc. Having said that the Instinct HR monitor is pretty good and you have ANT+ or BLE connection options so you can always pair it with a chest heart strap.

Thanks, Eric! Really hard to decide between the Instinct and a Fenix 5+. I am interested in the advanced VO2Max metrics to track my improvements, so that makes it tougher that Garmin decided to omit those for obvious strategic reasons. Other than that, feature-wise the Instinct covers just about everything else I would use. The nicer maps and Spotify option on the F5+ are great to have, but honestly I pretty much always have my phone anyway, so not sure how much I would actually use/need those. Also, I've been a G-Shock fan forever, so even though the Instinct may not be everyone's cup of tea, I actually prefer its styling over the F5.
@TechyAgent

@@imola8 Same! I've been wanting this form factor (G-Shock style) for years! This one is so close to perfect...I wish Garmin would either stop doing the silly feature limitations to segment their products for marketing purposes, or offer "power-ups" that could be purchased separately on Garmin Connect. If it's a cost thing, I'd be happy to pay a little extra to pick which Fenix features I want on the Instinct.

Hi. Solid review.. I am almost two years to your review so i hope that you still monitor this channel. I am training for a triathlon so i started to look at watches and ran into this one. What are your thoughts about capturing swimming, biking and running? And perhaps some weight training? Your feedback is MUCH appreciated. Cheers and thank you..
@TechyAgent
4 жыл бұрын
I think it will do a really good job tracking running and biking all on its own. For swimming, I think it will also do a great job with the exception of tracking heart rate during swimming, unless you also purchase a waterproof chest strap to pair with the watch for swimming. For weight training I think that this watch is not the best option. It’s OK, however it won’t do a great job capturing your heart rate or calories burned because it’s heart rate sensor is now a little dated compared to newer items on the market. That said, if you are training for a triathlon, I think this watch is a great option, especially considering it’s durability and light form factor.

Hi good review. I have question can we use navigation on the watch with offline mode for example if the watch is not able to receive GPS . Thanks in advance
@jamesgreenwood4412

Because this device uses breadcrumb navigation techniques offline (no GPS) navigation would never be recommended. I can't say for certain if the device could make some educated guesses as to where you were based on altimeter, barometer etc. but if my life depended on not getting lost I would not go without GPS. The Instinct does have some point and sight features as well with compass like functionality but again the purpose of the Garmin watches over an Apple Watch etc. is that the battery life will generally see you through most of your outdoor needs with GPS enabled. Anyway just my two cents and hope it helps.

@jamesgreenwood4412

935 is a dedicated running watch with triathlete features. The Instinct as TechyAgent pointed out is more of an Outdoor watch for hiking and trail runs. So it's really horses for courses and what you want to get out of the device. 935 is nice and on a base comparison has similar features (but there are loads more you may not need). Also 935 is made to be lighter for running so in some respects it's slightly less durable. It's also an older watch in terms of release date whereas Instinct was recently released. This can be a factor depending on what is important to you. Hope this helps.

It's an outdoor watch so if you want something a bit like a G-shock but with way more functionality then I would say this is very good. It's got military grade standard specs and overall is a great outdoor watch. Depending on how often you run - it doesn't have VO2 max estimation (Garmin keep this to the Fenix and Forerunner watches). It also doesn't have Connect IQ but tbh that isn't really a big thing so much for this device. Ultimately it depends on what you want the watch to look like I guess and how bashable/ scratch free you want it from the box....Personally I'm instinct all the way as I love all the Data Fields and other stuff Garmin gives you and I used to own a few G-shocks.

@jamesgreenwood4412
5 жыл бұрын
@@edu1113 - you're right the instinct does cost more. But here's a few things to consider. GOOD: Stratos is only 5 ATM rated. So in perfect calm water conditions that watch survived 30 minutes at pressure similar to 50m depth. Instinct has 10 ATM. Equivalent to 100M depth and therefore can keep it on your wrist when you swim and not just have a bath etc. 14 days watch life with constant HR monitoring etc. No raised WHRM so no uncomfortable or weird ring marks when you take it off. Constructed to U.S. military standard 810G for thermal, shock and water resistance. Barometer and compass built in as well as better GPS. All the benefits of the Garmin Connect app. Massive field customisation and data analysis. Breadcrumb trail navigation. Button only functionality (which is a plus for an outdoor watch as it means it works easily no matter the weather or conditions). POSSIBLY BAD DEPENDING ON YOUR NEEDS: No onboard music storage or WiFi. No VO2 Max. No NFC either (not sure this is available with Stratos but Instinct doesn't have it). No colour display as it's aimed to be legible in every light. No touchscreen (but touchscreens if your an outdoorsy person are a pain imho). Stratos is also currently £50 cheaper as mentioned (on an Amazon UK comparison). VERDICT: The decision really boils down to how into your sports are you. Do you really spend lots of time outdoors and is on board music without a phone really important to you? If your going to spend lots of time outdoors want something rugged and reliable and smarter than a G-shock (with navigation features) then Instinct is probably worth the £50 extra. If the money and the music really make the difference then either save the money or look at the other watches Garmin etc. sell that have what you want.

Hi mate, I also was thinking on the Stratos BUT it appears that the sensors are pure useless crap. See this page: It is written in spanish but he is our local equivalent-to-DCRainMaker reviewer on the Stratos. You can google-translate it or just check some of the screenshots for the sensors tests: www.correrunamaraton.com/xiaomi-amazfit-stratos/. To be honest I trust this site reviews so I definitely wouldn't waste my money on the Amazfit Stratos... It sure can be paired with chest bands and other quality sensors and it would be just fine but this also would build up on the final price so IMHO I don't see much benefit on it... Good point! That could be a metric that is important to runner and biker riders.

Just ordered one. Is VO2 max something they can add later in a software update or does this watch lack the hardware? Thanks
@JogBird

vo2max needs to be measured in a lab with exhalation gas capture, the stats they give you are bogus

This watch is made for outdoor use. If vo2 max is important then you should buy a watch that is made for running. Buy the correct equipment for the task that you want it to do

My heart rate sensor actually work better than my Apple Watch. I think you have gotten one that was messed up.

Between Garmin Instinct , Polar Vantage M and Forerunner 735xt, which one will be good for long distance runner?
@1972waz1972
5 жыл бұрын
Khathutshelo Nelukalo what is long distance? I would go with the Garmin 735 but that is just because i am a Garmin guy. I have owned Polar watches before and they are also great for training. I would not buy the Instinct if my primary use were training
