Adventure Rider Thanks, I'm using a Samson USB Condenser microphone with an anti-vibration mount and pop shield. Pretty much this setup www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000H4MZU2. It's a huge step up from using a headset microphone. Works great.

They sold valve caps at the auto parts store with the same principle, but they just showed a color changing in the actual valve cap, I know they're way cheaper and less quality then the Garmin, but my point being is the O-ring in the Caps always leaked and made your tires go flat. I'm assuming for the high dollar price you're paying for these that will not happen.

The quality is pretty good but as a product they are not ideal. I spoke to Honda about getting metal valve stems for my 600 and they flat out told me it was a bad idea and said just check your pressures with a gauge. The other issue is if you use your Garmin on the car it shows error messages because it can't find the valves. I sold them on after I made this video.

Looking the video at 4:17. Your valves are probably rubber valves with a metal stem but not whole metal valves. How should this work when garmin says, striktly use only metal valves?

It's not ideal. That was just a courtesy bike I had for the day so I used it for the demonstration. My actual bike has rubber stems. In all scenarios air on the side of caution. The sensor caps are very heavy and can easily damage rubber stems causing the tyre to deflate.

@@JosephByrne I guessed that, but was not shure. I have also rubber vents (metal threads, laid in rubber) AND this sensors. I buyed them a few days ago because I got a garmin 390 too and liked to use the opportunity to control the tyre pressure. But now I send the sensors back and stay without a pressure control, because I have new tyres and don´t want to get new ones, only to change the vents.

Metal stem valves mean a total metal valve not one whit a rubber base like in the youtube movie

Thanks for the review. I bought a used Suzuki V-Strom 1000 last year. It's got 24,000 km (about 13,000 miles) on it. It came with a Garmin 590LM navigator and the tyre pressure monitors. I noticed that everyone is alerting us to the fact that we need to install them on metal valve stems. This has me worried. The previous owner installed the TPMs on rubber valve stems. But what concerns me is that this setup has been good for at least 15,000 km according to the former owner. Just wondering who else has seen this. In the meantime I've removed them and will enquire with the local bike shop about fitting metal valve stems to the bike's rims.

Hi Marts. Certain types of rubber valve stems may be strong enough so Garmin may just advise it as a precautionary measure. It may also be fine up to certain speeds but after that the forces are too much for the valve stem to handle the extra weight. From my standpoint a catastrophic failure of a valve stem while the bike is moving would be a disaster so it's best to heed the warnings and only use with metal valve stems.

The caps look quite robust, do they throw the ballancing out on the wheels, and should i get my wheels ballanced with these caps on ?
@JosephByrne

UK Biker It depends on the weight of the wheel really. If you are riding a cruiser with heavy wheels it shouldn't make much difference, but if you ride a sports bike then getting your wheels balanced is a good idea. When I spoke to my Honda dealer about fitting metal valve stems to my CBR600RR to enable these to be fitted they advised that it would be just adding more un sprung mass and it'd be better to run with the stock rubber valve stems and be disciplined with a pressure gauge which is what I've done. As noted in the video don't ever fit them to rubber valve stems.

be careful: tire valve must be a vertical and metal one, otherwise you can break it!!

How long is the battery expected to last?
@JosephByrne

It depends. The sensors are motion activated so will conserve battery when not being used. I didn't use them long enough for the battery to drain to empty.

@JosephByrne

Why bother with the tire pressure sensors? Well you could argue there is a safety advantage of having the low pressure alerts. Why bother making the video? I've made several videos about the Zumo range of devices and the sensors are part of the portfolio of compatible accessories.

Hellboy171273 No they are sold individually. They don't represent great value for money to be honest.
