Flew a Skyland with a buddy to RNO and Sacramento what an ugly airplane; ok freighter for higher altitudes however. Liked the room in the cockpit....

Always wondered why it didn't have a "longer cord" wing for additional lift.

Quoting from Quora; "High aspect ratio wings have long wingspans and short chords, which has a major advantage: It reduces induced drag on the aircraft - Induced drag is somewhat a special form of drag (apart from the usual surface drag which affects the entire aircraft) since it occurs due to air flow around wingtips. Why? These wings have a much smaller surface area which do not allow large vortices to form at the wingtip, leading to lower induced drag i.e. better lift to drag L/D ratios than other wings. This property is incredibly useful when your aircraft is flying high and at lower speeds, as your primary goal is to save energy and stay up in the air as long as possible. "

@@pilot3016 The Shorts Skyvan range was unpressurized so the fuselage was very light, the whole aircraft was light, they were designed for efficiency. The Short 360 carries the same cargo load as the De Havilland Buffalo but only uses half the horsepower.

@@pilot3016 Also compare the Lockheed C-130 with the Shots Belfast which was almost twice the size: Lockheed C-130 payload = 19,000 kgs. Short Belfast payload = 35,000 kgs.

1967 onwards as the aircraft shown is powered by the Garrett engine.Earlier ones had the Astazou.
