My sister and I went to the Glitter Xmas show a few times - absolutely bloody brilliant! An amazing night, and the energy he puts in at his age was incredible. The Glitter Band as you say were also top class, and it's them I feel sorry for, now. Never again will they be able to play as the Glitter Band, because people will always associate them with GG, even though they were just as horrified as the rest of us, if not more so. Such a shame. The music was of its time, but so many mega hits will be lost now because people will always think of GG and his crimes. I still can't believe it... Ffs, he could have had his pick of women back in the day... Wtf makes someone do something like that, so awful there's no coming back from it? Sigh.

People forget, the real talent behind GG was Mike Leander. On all of the early studio recordings, you're hearing Mike play all of the instruments apart from the brass section. GG or rather Paul Raven was hired in the latter part of the 60's by Leander with a view to turning him into a successful act. Mike was responsible for generating the sound & directing the image. He even hired the band that became GG's tour band The Boston Showband which became known as first the Glittermen, then The Glitter Band when they started releasing their own material. Interestingly, Leander was the producer that the Beatles requested to take over the production on 'She's Leaving Home' when George Martin wasn't available. Leander doesn't get enough praise or recognition for his production. Things like the double drum loops etc had never been done before. It's amazing that people like Bill Wyman got away with openly admitting having relationships with 13 year old Mandy Smith but got away with it. I suspect there's heaps more from the era who are just as guilty as Glitter but who've gotten away with it. GG was a total moron though. After his prison sentence for all those images on his PC, rather than just keep his head down, he went & moved abroad to openly abuse young kids, which showed he was a predator who couldn't control himself. Of course like many perverts he blamed others !

@TheEctomorph

Not everyone did. At 49 years of age, I am old enough to remember most years of that decade (the 1970's) fairly well.... and, unless I am very much mistaken, there were many birds in this country who much preferred David Cassidy and/or Donny Osmond to Gary Glitter. What is more, there were a few other 'pretty boy' pop stars in the 1970's who outshone Mr Glitter in the 'looks' department, as well; apart from the aforementioned American heart-throbs (Mr Cassidy and Mr Osmond), there was Marc Bolan - the strikingly handsome lead singer and main man of T. Rex - and Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers .... the tartan-clad band from Edinburgh who engendered mass hysteria in teen girls, some 40 years ago. I would even say that there were a couple of guys in The Sweet who were probably more handsome - by conventional standards, at any rate - than Gary Glitter. No one would deny that Mr Glitter was one of the biggest pop/rock stars in the land for a couple of years or so - back in the early/mid-1970s - but the fact remains that he never had the quite the same amount of bird-pulling power and sexual magnetism as Mr Cassidy, Mr Osmond and the other guys I have mentioned. That said, there is no doubt that Glitter was a fairly good-looking, attractive chap when he was young and in his prime. Back in 1973 - or even '77 - when he was an 'A' list celebrity with a whiter-than-white image, hardly anyone could have foreseen that he would one day be convicted of serious sexual offences against female children and young teens. How the mighty are fallen!
@geekpie100
10 жыл бұрын
william kinch Yes I agree, Cassidy and Donny Osmond were the pinups on girls' bedroom walls. Glitter aimed at a different demographic. It was OK for lads to like Glitter (and Slade, Sweet and Mud): testimony to that is that this song was a favourite football chant for 20 years. It was only recently that Leeds fans stopped singing, "Hello, Hello, United are back".

When I look back,I still love the sound,which was created by the Glitter band not him.When I watch him prancing around the stage,it's so hard to imagine that any woman saw him as a sex symbol,he was like a caricature of a persona he created.He was at best an average singer,as good as anyone on a karaoke night,his dance moves were so outlandish and strange,looked more like he had jerky movements. Gerry Shepherd was the real deal,why they needed him,I've never understood.🤔

At school, older boys used to take the mickey out of boys like me who liked Sweet, Slade and Gary Glitter instead of “proper” music like Deep Purple and Pink Floyd. 40 years on, it’s clear to me my instincts were right.
