Total football is not for out and out finishers, you need all 11 to play proper ball. Romario wasn't a natural fit either but he was extremely gifted.

It's not like he was stuck on the wing in an English 4-4-2. In Cruyff's formation there is 1 central striker with the 2 wingers, those wingers are hybrids, they're there to score as well as create. Look at David Villa or Luis Suarez, both strikers who played on the left wing at Barca...where they ghosted into the space to score. Possibly Lineker wasn't a rounded enough footballer for the system.

Cruyff had some extreme ideas about goalkeepers and strikers, who were making goals, but who were not extremely technically gifted. He wanted 11 guys who could pass, even at the cost of competent goalkeeping and scoring goals.

That was essentially the problem. A typical Dutch coach syndrom. They don't appreciate goal scoring limited strikers, limiteds defender who can mark their man perfectly and limited goalkeepers who keep the ball out of the goal. It's all about the passing, dribbling and handling and they are blind for the rest. I also think of van Gaal having Klose and Luca Toni as strikers at Bayern and who did play as a number 9? Olic. Because he could play with his back towards the goal and hold the ball. I would have changed the system in order to let those two strikers shine.

The more important question; does anyone still respect Gary Lineker?

@@tulyar57 Apparently Mr. Lineker doesn't share your fastidious concern for a rigorous distinction between the two. It is he who has co-opted his high public profile, obtained exclusively through his sporting exploits, as a soap box on which to stand in order to peddle certain political ideologies. My original question stands.

@@ronmexico1874 As far as I can see this video is a discussion of the respect of two men on purely football matters. Lineker does not espouse his political views on the likes of MOTD or The Rest is Football and the only one conflating the two here appears to be your good self. Perhaps you should apply the same principle? Pot, kettle and black come to mind.

A bit of a sad story. British players better stay on the island. Total Football is a different game ... If it is a bit of a consolation: Ronaldo also wouldn't survive in the Cruijff system.

Wrong! His biggest achievement was convincing barca to drop the minimum length rule. Without this no iniesta xavi or messi at barca (or any other club). He was the first to say sizes does not matter in fact, he prefered smaller technical players over tall en strong players

My team, Dumbarton Football Club's manager, Sean Fallon, tried to sign Johan Cruyff in 1980. Fallon offered Cruyff a "pay per game basis" deal. Cruyff asked for a few days to consider the offer, but ultimately turned it down. Cruyff turned down the offer because; - Age: Cruyff thought he was too old to move to Scotland, where the weather would be difficult. - Stiff muscles: Cruyff thought that moving to a cold country would cause his muscles to get stiff. Cruyff had a desire to play in Britain At the time, Cruyff had not long come out of retirement due financial problems following some poor business decisions. He’d taken a lucrative deal with Los Angeles Aztecs of the NASL. A year later the move was made by Dumbarton Cruyff later said that he was tempted by the offer, but ultimately decided to turn it down Sean Fallon, Sons manager at the time, admitted he knew the club was far too small to ever pull in such a big name and it was a ‘publicity stunt’ as much anything. He admitted the Cruyff was every bit the legend off the field as he was on it saying Cruyff took the call, met up with club reps and even took a couple of days to mull it over but took a lucrative offer from Washington Diplomats He missed a chance to see Dumbarton/Castle and, and I promise this is true, Overtoun Bridge - the world famous Dumbarton Dog Suicide Bridge.
