Gary Mason was seriously underrated in my view. He had world class power and beat a number of decent opponents.

@@solidcake3401 nonsense…. Mercer, Holyfield and Klitschko gave Lewis far harder fights than Mason….. Lewis dominated Mason…. Lovely man and talented fighter but you are being far too generous with your words…

I had the pleasure of meeting Gary once - played indoor cricket against him and beers afterwards in Strood. Just like you saw on TV he was always smiling and joking, very down to earth and was just one of the lads in the bar. Such a shame what happened to him after he retired - he opened a jewellery shop in Gillingham, Kent (Punch n' Jewellery) but that didn't work out, and after a string of other failed attempts at business start-ups he ended up working as a doorman in the casualty department at a hospital in Croydon. He also started turning up at unlicensed boxing events which got some publicity in the papers and didn't do his public popularity much good. Whilst out on his bike early one morning near Croydon he was knocked down and killed by a white van man. Tragic fall from grace and end, for a really nice fella.

Poor Old Jess. He got absolutely SPLATTERED!! That KO was hard, fast & frightening. TOTALLY out of his depth & lucky he wasn't badly injured. Mason against this type of opponent made Gary look like Mike Tyson! RiP Champ..

Back in the day we thought Mason was slow because we were comparing him to Tyson, Spinks, Dokes and Holyfield. But today comparing him to Fury, Joshua and Wilder he looks fast and has much better punch variety. I reckon Mason would beat them three and probably beat Usyk too. The division today is dire. And only for MUGS.

Could Gary Mason have beaten one of the alphabet 'world champions' such as Pinklon Thomas or James Smith? I'd have given him a good chance especially if the fight was in the UK. He never got the chance, what a shame.

Gary was a great fighter and a real gent. I just think that the Lawless team were just not up to pushing heavyweights up to the top drawer. Big Frank and Gary Mason needed US training at this point.

Mason wanted to fight Tyson and described him as "made for me". For which I assume Tyson must have had a weakness against slow, ponderous, flat footed British heavyweights, like everyone in that Terry Lawless stable.
