So hard to believe that this coherent, articulate, happy sportsman was in such a dark place and a few hours later took his life. Depression and despair does not always present as we expect it to. Sad that he felt he had no option but to bow out. Terribly sad.
@duffman18
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, depression looks nothing like it does in movies and TV shows. It's not obvious. Far from it. Even Gary's wife and kids didn't know what he was going through, and they saw him every day. This is a good lesson for people to learn, albeit it's a tradegy that he had to die to teach that lesson. But hopefully it meant that people actually start talking to their friends and family, and make sure they're OK, even when they seem fine. Always be open with them, and make it very clear to them that they can talk to you about anything and you'll always be there for them. Even then, they have to want help, to accept it. But so many people die because they never got the help they needed. It's like with people drowning. The vast majority of people don't know what drowning looks like. They think it'll be obvious, when really most people can be staring at a video of a pool and told to specifically look out for someone that will start drowning, and even then people don't spot them. There's no screaming, or wild thrashing about with arms and legs, they just start to look like they're bobbing up and down in the water. They look completely fine. But then eventually they stop coming up for air. People only spot it far too late. Everyone needs to learn what drowning really looks like, and everyone needs to learn what depression really looks like.

At the end of the day, when you get so far into a dark place, taking yourself out seems like the most logical thing to do, and in that state of mind you are almost convinced that everybody else will be better off without you. I remember watching this and being absolutely stunned at the news the next day...I still don't see much in the way of signs having watched this again. They say some people who decide they're going to take their own life appear very relaxed leading up to it because they've made the decision and they know the sheer stress of everything will soon be gone. All I know is it was such a tragedy for Gary and all his family and friends. He seemed such a really lovely guy and everything seemed to be going great for him on the football side of things. I thought more would come out on this story with it appearing such a mystery but it hasn't. I'm sure there'll be one or two people who know something but it's probably best left to the hidden archives....RIP fella !

That's the thing, you never SEE what's about to happen or what is, that's why it's called the silent killer. You don't see "signs" or anything, I speak from experience, I've had depression since I was a kid as well as an anxiety disorder which makes me unable to speak to a neighbour in the street never mind communicate with the open world. It's a lonely place to be in, but it can be maintained, can be something you survive from, even though it never goes away. It can happen to ANYONE. Such a shame it took him, but it's took a lot of good people. Horrible, horrible thing to go through, I do every day. R.I.P Gary mate.

I read that Speed's old Newcastle United team mate Alan Shearer attended an afternoon football match with him a couple hours after this was filmed (Manchester United vs, Newcastle at Old Trafford, which was just down the road from the TV studio). If Shearer, an old dear friend, didn't notice anything was wrong, then who would? Very sad for all involved.

@Cian MacGana Could you be any more patronising and sanctimonious? So from your statement, you are saying you are a better person than either Claudette, Alan Shearer (or millions of other people for that matter) because you can spot tell tale signs better than they can? Consider revising your comment so it sounds a bit less like you're blowing smoke up your own backside.

@Cian MacGana 1. I don't have a beer belly (I am teetotal so that would be a tad tricky!!!)... 2. I don't ignore people I care about and I do call them, like any normal person. 3. You made out that you were more perceptive than someone who knew Gary Speed better than you did (Alan Shearer) who couldn't see anything out of the ordinary with his behaviour (and you didn't know him at all BTW). I don't for one second dispute that you care about your 'close' people but don't come on YT giving it the big 'I AM' and make out you are a better person than anyone else. Try a bit of humility. If people 'very' close to Gary Speed (i.e. his ex team mates, close friends and even his own 'wife' couldn't see signs that he was on the edge of suicide, then WTF makes you think you could've?)

I know just about everybody blames depression for his death but I don't think people should be so quick to dismiss the coroner's thoughts and should maybe consider that he was right to suggest drunkeness, a massive row with his wife and a stupid attempt to try and scare her may have led to his death. Remember, Gary had just come home from a party drunk and still wet from when he was pushed into a swimming pool, which may have made him feel annoyed and humiliated. There then followed this row with his wife, the details of which she has somehow forgotten. I know it's a sensitive, tragic subject but I don't think anybody can sit here now and say with any degree of certainty that, although Gary spent every waking hour with family, friends or colleagues and showed no real signs of being depressed to them, he was indeed suffering from deep depression and decided to kill himself because of it.

Not many players can say they have achieved quite as much as this man has. A key player for 5 different clubs, a national hero for Wales, and not only that, respected by everyone in football both in life and death. An inspiration. RIP Speedo

Gary had everything going for him, a good job , handsome, respect of everyone in football and a family that loved him. His death leaves a thousand questions for everyone and causes so much hurt to those closest to him "What could I have said?", "What could I have done?"," Why?" questions that will now never be answered. You hurt the ones you love most with a suicide with scars that will never be healed. For everyone out there feeling suicidal GET HELP BEFORE ITS TO LATE

What a tragic loss this was. Seems like he was just a genuinely lovely man. It's so desperately sad, and quite frightening that everyone who knew him said that nothing seemed out of sorts with him.

I saw tiredness. I mean if I didn't know what he did next, I'd say he was shattered, but in retrospect we see other things too, such is the power of retrospect.

depression = repressed rage, if people knew this there would be a lot less suicides.

Even if people know it, they will still repress it. Many do know it and continue to repress it as they fear their own rage even more.

His hands were obviously shaking and he really forced out a fake smile in the first ten seconds of the clip .still completely baffling though. What a lovely man. RIP Gary

Personally he looks empty on the inside, just looks like he wasn’t gonna recover on what happened on the inside of his life, no one deserves to lose their life to suicide. God bless his soul.

So, so sad. Gary was such a kind and decent man. I remember the last time I saw him play for Leeds was v Arsenal (away) in April 1996 and he made time to sign autographs for so many Arsenal (Junior Gunners) fans prior to kick off. For me he not only represented everything good about Leeds, but everything that is good about football in general. May he RIP 🙏

as far as anyone of us can know he was a cool guy. it just makes you think what the individual human mind going through, the personal demons and of course that depression can hit any man no matter who they are..and to anyone out there who deals with the same situation, ask for help my friend and stick to all of those you love and love you back. there is always a reason to stay, so fight and find it. rip gary! hope you do what you always loved in heaven and courage to his people.

Glasgow Rangers fan here. Gary Speed will Forever be in EVERY Football fans heart. ❤ HE EARNED THAT! R.I.P Gary Speed. Truly one of a kind. A Legend. A Gentleman. A true Profesional at his work, on and off the field. A Role Model in every sense. Yes, a Legend at MANY Football Clubs and especially the Welsh International squad, both as Player and Manager, but I will ALWAYS remember him fondly for his outstanding performances for Leeds against Rangers in the "Battle of Britain" in the 1992/93 Season. The first Leg at Ibrox was a good game but scrappy. Gary McAllisters volleyed Goal for Leeds in the opening minutes of the game was unbelievable. The Rangers fans were still trying to find and sit on their allocated seats because the Goal was scored so fast after kick-off. Leeds had a Star-Studded team back in the day, especially that Season. The Second Leg at Elland Road is regarded Worldwide as one of the Best UEFA Champions League game EVER. Cosidered as Two of the very best ever Goals scored in the history of the UEFA Champions League competition, and BOTH Goals were scored in the same game. Mark Hateleys Wonergoal with a Striked Lobbed Volley, after a superb lobbed chip assist by Ally McCoist. Then moments later Mark Hatley perfectly delivered a crossed ball assist to Ally McCoist who scored a World-Class Diving Header. Hateleys Goal is consiered as the best goal scored, but personally my all time favorite Goal is Ally McCoists Diving Header. Ally was born a Rangers fan and the goal meant so much to him, he famously burst out crying with tears straight after scoring, which almost got him subbed off if he didn't control his emotions vry quickly. Then Eric Cantona scored a beautiful Goal as a late conselation. Over both Legs, Gary Speed and Eric Cantona TERRORISED Rangers with their unmatched and untouchable skills. If it wasn't for the Late and Great Goalkeeper "The Goalie" Andy Goram (R.I.P to him as well) making about 100+ World-Class saves during both Legs, Gary Speed and Cantona would have won both games single-handedly for Leeds if it wasn't for Andy Gorams efforts in front of goal. For me, Andy Goram was the TRUE Man of the Match and Hero in both of the two games played. That's just my personal opinion. Here is a link to Gary Speeds wiki, it's very intresting = en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Speed#Leeds_United GOD Bless you and Rest in Peace, Gary Andrew Speed M.B.E 💙

Gary Speed was football legend. He is the most capped outfield player for Wales and has the second highest number of appearances (all-time) in the PL. He was still doing the buisiness in the PL in his late 30s and was turning around Wales's fortunes aswell. He was one of my favourite players when i was growing up. He had everything. I just can't get my head around why he commited suicide? I'ts unbelievable. RIP Gary Speed.
