@@singletona082 it's been 6 weeks since my surgery and I'm almost completely blind in the eye (I'd give my vision 1% out of 100%) that I had the vitrectomy in. It worsened last night so I called 111 emergency medical advice and they put me onto a local eye specialist who told me I should ring the hospital I had the vitrectomy done at tomorrow. Fat lot of help that was... the surgery seems like the least impressive result I could of hoped for to the extent that I wonder if not doing anything about it would have been better as I found the operation awful as well lying awake as they do it and I found a sincere lack of information given to me about my recovery made me constantly worried. I can only hope that nothing happens to the sight in my eye that is working now as I now half know how scary it would be to go completely blind and now have very little faith in surgery being able to restore vision. That said I still have gas in my eye and am only 6 weeks post op.... my fear now is that my recent worsening of my vision since the vitrectomy is maybe a cataract which will in turn require further surgery.

Hi, Sorry to hear this. Detached retinas blind very quickly if not treated. If caught early, before it reaches the central vision (macula-on) perfect vision can be restored. However, if caught late (macula-off) and the central vision is involved, then the vision will never be perfect, even if repaired. Each day the retina is detached you will lose further vision permanently. Hope you get some useful vision back, best wishes, Steve

I just had this done yesterday. Lamellar macular hole in my retina. Only other question I have is; what exactly is the gas used?

Thanks for the video, I do have a question.. what substance replaces the gas bubble?
@eyesurgeryltd9392

As the gas bubble absorbs the eye fills with its natural fluid, known as aqueous. This fluid is replaced daily in a normal eye.

Hi - thanks for sharing. I’m about 9 days post operation and I’m noticing in my upper peripheral vision a black cloudy area. Is this the meniscus of the gas bubble? Or is this a sign of detachment still? Thanks.

I'm noticing the opposite. The bottom part is the blurry bubble part & the top part is clear. I'm 8 days in and the clearer part up top is getting bigger as the blurry part below is shrinking. How is your eye doing now? To me it seems like the only comparison I could think of is goggles on your eyes filling with water and one part is foggy and the other part is clear but it gets better quickly from what I could see. I can't wait till I can drive again

This can happen if the eye has an internal haemorrhage, the gas is relatively clear and above is dark.

No flying with any gas in the eye. Otherwise you will be permanently blinded instantly. You can see the gas bubble and you are safe to fly the second it is gone.

Depends on the gas. I've had SF6 which disappeared in about 2 weeks, and had C3F8 in the other eye which took almost 3 months.

I just had phacovitrectomy 10 days ago . The next day I can see the image of the gas bubble like on the video and it decreases in size as days goes by . This time I can see the images of gas bubble in 3 separate sizes , is that normal?

Yes the bubble can break up into smaller bubbles with physical activity. Don't worry, they will all dissolve.

I need this done within next 2 days .how long will I be in hospital ? I've been told I have to lay on my front face down for 5 days. Can I do this at home or do I have to stay in hospital?

Posturing is very surgeon and country specific. I do not posture any patients for any procedure beyond the first day. Some surgeons may posture you for weeks. Posturing can be done at home. In the UK all surgery is day-case and you go home the same day.

Unfortunately it was a haemorrhage and the bleed was too much. I'm now permanently blind in my right eye. I don't have diabetes so they said I must have had high blood pressure at the time . A year on I'm still having scans every month, and all the blood is still there , none has disappeared . Even if the blood does finally disappear ill be left with scarring , so I'll never get my sight back in my right eye 😢

Sorry to hear this. Bleeding can be from a burst artery (aneurysm) or from subretinal blood vessels, such as in wet macular degeneration. Best wishes, Steve

It may seem slow. Some gas lasts days (air), 3 weeks (SF6), or up to 8 weeks (C3F8). It should clear above the bubble and should be a big black meniscus wobbling around.

@Kaiya_Corey Hi buddy! it depends what kind you have With the recovery. I was out of hospital 4 hours later after operation but had to go back the next day to have my patch removed and home an hour after that I had Some drops to take which were a Smidgen Sore!. I Spoken to Some people that had to lay on their front for a while I had a gas bubble in my eye and had a black Line across my vision that Went down and my vision Returned to normal slowly over a few weeks was lill the bubble from a spirit level inside my eye !! if you do need to have this Surgery and have to lay on your front because they may have put a Silicone bubble in its best to buy a massage table With the hole for the head So you can lay face down do you know What type or when your having it done buddy? and whats in for? is it diabetes related like mine? I gather with the Gas bubble it a much easier and faster recovery!

@matrich1983

@vyom7387 all healed now but the top was clearer a bit blurry and below the line was like water and took a week or two to come down the bubble goes down and your vision comes back to clear! Waiting for it on my left eye now but overall very happy with the surgery!

The gas is lighter than air, so why does the blurring appear lower down and why does the gas line go down...? It should be the other way round. Presumably it's because the image of the gas/aqueous line is formed after the lens and the image is "righted", but incorrectly.
@eyesurgeryltd9392

Exactly! The eye sees everything upside down. The meniscus actually rises as the gas shrinks, but you will see it as lowering.

Thank you so much for asking this question! I have been asking myself this question and researching it for hours. I asked my surgeon about his in my follow up visit and he didn’t even seem to understand my question! Surely this must be common concern. I knew that the incoming view is reflected upside down, and even asked my surgeon if that would explain it. He still didn’t get my question. I thought I must be going nuts, and maybe I actually WAS losing the fluid that I thought might be below the visible maniscus. I think surgeons are often held to a very high standard of production, and tend to just want to get through the patients’ concerns very quickly, with only a cursory script. My surgeon was great, but I feel like they probably leave a lot of patents with unnecessary anxiety which probable actually results in more call back consultations and visits. A definite false economy on their part.

The bubble will slowly dissolve on its own, no need to do anything. You will need a check when all cleared to ensure the operation was a success.

Remember that the bubble is like an internal bandage holding the retina in place. The sight is dependent on how badly the retina was damaged. All we can do is re-attach the retina and the retina has to do the rest. Good luck.
