This fire pit project was a bit of fun to see if we could make a floating concrete fire pit...out of FOAM! The process itself was pretty easy, using scrap pieces of foam cut on the 4-axis cutter and assembled with spray-on contact adhesive.
As it was cantilevered, I needed to add some strength with aluminium.
12mm rebar was chemset into the concrete and the cores were filled with 55mpa concrete.
Once dried, it was rendered with 6mm concrete look render, aluminium corners and 2 fibreglass mesh layers for strength. It also provides a heat barrier between the fire and the foam so nothing melts.
The foam took about 2 hours to cut out and glue together. The frame was another hour. The render only took about an hour too, so all up a quick project for a great result.
