Gatavai Methodist Choir shook the whole of Samoa watching and tuning in from everywhere around the world during the Teuila Choral competition in 2004 when they sung one of G.F Handel's works from his Messiah Oratorio "For unto us a Child is Born" translated and under the direction of the late Rev Latu Amani and Rev Taeano Amani. At the time, not many choirs in Samoa were bold enough to make such a selection from a classical oratorio that is the repertoire of classically trained singers, probably only a couple accomplished local choirs in Upolu and American Samoa but never before a choir from Savaii. Aside from that, I think the most challenging part is having to stay composed performing live in front of thousands of people while concurrently making sure your breathing is calm, relaxed and well circulated. Singing melisma or otherwise put simply as a cluster of notes in a phrase sung expressively is unusual, rather difficult to properly execute without proper classical training for Samoan church choirs but Gataivai proved that wrong and executed them to the "tea" and granted none were classically trained. Their rendition took the judges and everyone by surprise as one of the smallest choirs in the competition making this performance the most iconic and goes down as the most memorable in Teuila history that without doubt deserved their win. No auto tune, just pure raw talents of Gataivai Methodist choir. #mekostrong #celebrating_60years_SamoanMethodistChurch
I do not own rights to the music
