@@TheFaustianAlchemist Battle of the Planet was 1978. I should know -- I saw it back then. Very popular show for its time; it was syndicated and shown by local, mostly non-affiliated stations, not the national networks. It was shown around the world in different languages until about 1987 and disappeared. After 1986, the second dubbed version with a different cast, G-Force was all you saw in the US through the mid-1990s at least. More people saw the G-Force adaptation on Cartoon Network. It was aired on the TBS Channel in 1986 but I don't think they showed all the episodes and it dropped off the schedule. Cartoon Network was originally owned by Turner Broadcasting and someone remembered they had the rights to this series which is why it aired on CN. CN and TBS were later sold to Warner Bros. Battle of the Planets was the more popular adaptation -- a lot more people have seen it internationally. It was also brought back into streaming by Sentai Films a few years back. Couldn't tell you who streamed it -- Sentai's service, Hulu, or Amazon. It might be on RetroCrush or AsianCrush by now. Neither Battle of the Planets or G-Force received full series release on DVD in the US even at the height of DVD's popularity in the early 2000s. They only received collections with select episodes of both dubs alongside the original Japanese episodes. They did about 3-5 individual DVDs and a boxed collection of what was released Stateside. Only in the UK was the entire Battle of the Planets series released on home media (DVD) and that was a limited run. Most of the torrents and episodes posted online are from the UK home video release. The G-Force dub never had a full series release on home media.

Turner didn't Americanize it. Sandy Frank Productions was the company that did the first two English dubs of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. Battle of the Planets aired about 6 years after the Japanese premiere which was in 1972. The show ran for 2 years in Japan (1972-1974) because it was very popular. They made 105 episodes of Gatchaman. The production company in Japan tried to sell it internationally as early as 1975 but it wasn't until Star Wars arrived in 1977 that it got real traction. TBS commissioned the second English adaptation (G-Force) but Sandy Frank still handled the actual dubbing with another group of voice actors, 2 of whom had worked with Harmony Gold on the Robotech series. Sandy Frank was famous (or infamous depending on your POV) for localizing live-action science fiction shows from Japan. SFP signed a long-term license (3-decades I believe) with Tatsunoko Productions (creators of Gatchaman) for the Gatchaman footage. Even after ADV Films got the license to Gatchaman to dub it faithfully with yet another group of voice actors in the early 2000s, they had to deal with SFP since their agreement with Tatsunoko was still in effect. Sandy Frank's license to the Gatchaman footage lapsed after 2007. Battle of the Planets was streamed years later under the license agreement Sentai Films made with Tatsunoko Productions. Tatsunoko controls the distribution of the Gatchaman English dubs by SFP and ADV Films/Sentai. Sentai Films has the rights to Gatchaman, and they later optioned the Gatchaman compilation (which they also dubbed), the 1994 Gatchaman OVA remake, and the sequel series (Gatchman 2, Gatchaman F) and the alternate reality Gatchaman Crowds series after ADV reformed as Sentai Films. They never dubbed Gatchaman 2 and F because those series were just not as popular; they never believed the sales would justify and cover the cost of English dubs -- and frankly G-2 and G-F aren't very good shows. Every Gatchaman series was released on DVD by Sentai Films. Only Gatchaman 2 and F weren't remastered for hi-def release on Blu ray. I don't believe G-2 and G-F have been released on Blu ray in Japan, either. ADV's dub of Gatchaman is far more faithful than the first two dubs and cast better as well. Some of the voices for the first two dubs were miscast; frankly Kasey Kasem sounded too old to be playing Mark (G-1's name in BoTP)! They had great voice actors in the first two dub attempts (Alan Young, Kasey Kasem, Keye Luke, Janet Waldo, Cam Clarke, Barbara Goodson) but they were hampered by bad editing and script changes that were forced on those adaptations by broadcast standards & practices which have evolved and loosened up and then tightened up again in recent years. Since ADV released directly to video and later hosted the Gatchaman series on the Anime Channel they didn't have to deal with the BS&P BS and could do a more faithful adaptation. It really was one of their better dubs. The successor company to ADV, Sentai Films, picked up options to the later Gatchaman releases of the 2000s and relicensed the original series, the 1994 OVAs, and sequel TV series as well.

Ishinomori and Tsuburaya where taking ideas from eachother back and forth and any one who calls that stealing is dumb because its ends up making Toku and Anime more awesome. Power rangers would be nothing without Spider-man and Golion, Golion and Combattler V would be nothing with Gatchaman and Goranger, Gatchaman and Goranger would not exist without Kamen Rider and Ultraman and those go back to Moonlight Mask and Ogon Bat. Yeah, that was just what entertaining music in general sounded like: a band, if not an orchestra. By the late 1970s, the influence of disco and funk was definitely established, with electric guitar and bass, and analog electronic warbling has meant "space stuff" for a long time, but most of the 20th century was pretty acoustic.

I've never really watched this anime, but now I really want to. Preferably in dubbed format though, I can't read subtitles and watch all the action happening at the same time.
