Dividing into quadrants is a great way to visualize the map, I might hate this map a little less. Good stuff!

Exceptional video. You’ve essentially done all the hard work required for players with a strong competitive mindset to pick up this map.

This map is indeed quite fun and I appreciate the guide a lot! That being said, I do dread it when I'm solo queue'ing and it comes up bc, well, not every one knows how to play it....

Coach is back with more helpful info. Honestly, between this and Inky I still prefer gates just because it's not just Oni Village but boring, even though I still had no clue how to properly position myself in this map. Thanks to your video, now I do!

I think what makes map discourse in this game infuriating is so many people just refuse to engage with map mechanics like they're playing air hockey. In air hockey, it's obviously just a straight contest between the players, there are no neutral third-party elements to contend with (unless you plop some bricks on the field or something), but in OS, there are. And it seems like a lot of players get angry when they lose a point because of "map gimmicks" not understanding that the map is not some secret third team out to get you, but neutral symmetrical elements that either team can make use of. At the end of the day, you are still getting outplayed by other people, nothing about that has changed. Sure, sometimes "shit just happens" but that's true even on Ahten because even abilities can be used ways that elicit happy accidents (or self-goals), and if you're against *that*, I mean, just play air hockey. Frustrating that many people will default to screeching that something should be removed instead of taking the time to analyze their own play. If it's symmetrical and/or deterministic, there's nothing anti-competitive about it.

I disagree with this map in particular, just due to the nature of the gimmick here and how strongly it undermines fundamentals and warps the play area. It's not uncommon to have bumper goal portals devolve into two goalies having a strike war effectively point blank on one another, reducing everyone else's roles to disruption only. If the gimmick were ONLY the center portals, I think it'd be fine. But the bumper portals just aren't engaging to play around. They're just annoying. Are you seeing people hating on other maps just because of gimmicks? Everything has gimmicks, so I'd be surprised; I haven't seen it at least. Just this one particular map feels like it sticks out like a sore thumb in the worst possible way. It just feels awful to play. And you can have symmetrical mechanics that are simply bad. Imagine a map that has a global DoT effect of a flat value-- Can you technically build around it? Sure, take characters with higher stagger values and growths. Is it a fun gimmick? No. Does it meaningfully add to the competitiveness of the game? No. Would it be frustrating and feel unfairly suited to certain builds/playstyles? Yes. Would it damage team diversity, and therefore competitive expression? Yes. Something can be completely symmetrical and deterministic and still be anticompetitive and even beyond that, anti-fun, or just flat out contrary to the rest of the game's established gameplay language.

Tbh. I really like gates. Its my second fav map (after demon, which is so fun as a goalie), and its gimmick, while it takes getting used to, is really fun. Will admit that the corner portal being able to shoot directly into your goal is not fun tho. Have to cover it at all times, and if it gets through, you have a split second, or its a goal, so thats not as fun

A lot of the things you mention here can probably be applied to all the other maps too, I'll be sure to keep these things in mind next time I'm playing; Thank you!

Probably, this does ends up slightly being a general positioning guide. However the way through with we attack barriers and goals varies map to map and this does a deep enough dive into that the hopefully people can do their own dives into the other maps.

Man, all the trash talk about gates on reddit, is probably worse to me than the map is to theirs. Last time i did my best to try and explain why the map was not what someone was making it out to be, but i left it open that they can still hate the map if its not their style, they hit me with the "Your point is invalid".... I know reddit comments are a joke, but cmon at least try xD I LOVE GATES
