Wow !!! I see why the role to gator was samuel's least favorite. He was fresh off recovering from addiction. So it was almost like playing a real life envision of himself during the time he was addicted to cocaine and herion wow i never knew. He played this role so well.

Samuel L. Jacksons nails the role perfectly as he himself was going into rehab. This character mirrors the way drugs tears families apart for the worse. I give major props to Jackson for playing Flipper's brother. He deserved as Oscar for Jungle Fever before he did Pulp Fiction.

you have to remember that some of the rude comments and the laughter is due to a defense mechanism. Some laugh to keep from crying and reflecting on their own lives. This probably one of the most powerful scenes in film

I just love how this movie isn't just about one aspect of dysfunctional familes, but the entire prism. No matter who you are or how you grew up, you can recognize yourself within at least one of the margins of the film.

Spike Lee really chooses his actors carefully. it's hard to believe that hardly any of these actors got nominated big awards for roles in his movies. Not only does he convey thought provoking themes, but is also a good casting director. The actors really concentrate on the characters they play.

Casting directors do auditions, they are the first step. Thank them as well. They ultimately work with the director. I've auditioned for a large production before. First they - casting director - give you what's called a "side" which is like a few lines you memorize for the audition, and a time to come in (depending on your headshot resume thing or whatever) And it's rapid. There's always numerous other people auditioning, you walk in to a room with the casting director, a person to work the camera and another person cuing up your lines. They went through like 4-6 auditions an hour. Quickly learned the film industry not for me. I remember a sign on the door to the audition room - "Do Not Ask to Shake Hands" ... this was long before and from what I was told it's to keep boundaries, establish the fact this is an atypical job interview, they don't care who you are

It's rare when you see an actor actually nail a part. Sam Jack as Gotor = Nailed it. This scene is too funny but the only reason I laugh is to keep from crying. I've seen that same look in the eyes of a loved one and that there is no joke.

Because there one girl kept asking me for money and kept telling her that the last time but kept begging until I showed I was for real. One day she comes to my house sits down on my chair and then asks me for money and cut her off real quick and said no real quick and told her off. This is the most memorable scene in the movie for me. There's at least two "Gators" I know about on my mother's side of the family (one that's currently 'housesittin' over at my late grandparents' pad-lol; the other behind bars last time I heard). Samuel L. Jackson was and still is the man! He did a terrific job in this movie as Gator. I know he didn't get to be a household name 'til he did "Pulp Fiction" a few years later. I can't really recall what he did before "Coming To America" where he played the man who robbed McDowell's. I do remember him in the opening scene in "Raw" also. Great actor!!

This was a bone-chilling scene Ossie Davis should have got an Oscar as well as Samuel Jackson the crazy part is this scene was basically what happened to Marvin Gaye and his father in real life with Marvin Gaye was actually defending his mother when his Dad shot and killed him and I wish that they upload Ossie Davis scene on get on the bus when he explained how he missed the first Million Man March which was sad before he died on the bus in 1991 you had Samuel L Jackson Halle Berry and Chris Rock all we're on the come-up in Hollywood that played crackhead roles and now they all three are legendary while Gator is the highest grossing actor in history
