Walter gives this song a whole new character. Now that I'm hearing this it does kind of sound like a Walter song. I wish that tenor player stuck to the melody a little more. Oh well. Great sound/video quality!

Walter on lead vocals? Sometimes he used to do vocals for a track from one of his solo albums, but this seems unusual. Donald really seems to be enjoying having a break from singing duties!

Legend has it, "Custerdome" is Warner Bros. The rumor is that they wanted to sign Donald Fagen without Walter Becker. Some interpret the song as a sort of cryptic tribute to Walter after Donald Fagen signed his solo deal with WB. One theory is that Walter's the "Gaucho" that was not good enough for WB aka "the Custerdome".

I don’t understand the word Custerdome but I speculate that it means the shark biting ahole music execs in their ivory towers, the Custerdome. Custer because it represents being slaughtered by those execs. Like going into the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

I love Steely Dan so much and Gaucho is my favourite S.D. album, but sorry folks, this is truly a horrific version of Gaucho. It's why I won't go to a Steely Dan live concert. I know I would come away disappointed. But I can tell you one thing. When I saw Dutch band 'Lo van Gorp' (S.D. tribute band) here on youtube, I was absolutely blown away. They do it even better than S.D. The sound, the harmonies...it sounds just like the original recording. I dont know how they do it. And their Hey Nineteen is just like the original. Still miss Walt though.

@@carolynstewart8465 ...Just realized that Walt was singing the lead which takes it further away from the original studio masterpiece sound with it's excellent harmonies during the choruses. And as time goes on, Fagen is struggling more and more with the high notes, often talking the words rather than singing them as a way out. Which is why he handed over the vocals to Walt. The big bands and our rock icons from their golden heydays must accept critisism when they choose to recreate those great tracks from the past with fading voices and underpar performances, that don't sound like the original studio recordings...something that Fagen was, as being a fastidious perfectionist. Gaucho was a career peak for me, after the brilliant Royal Scam followed by Aja. And after Fagen's brilliant solo project The Nightfly, there really wasn't anything else to enjoy by him except a couple of tracks on Kamikariad....'Tomorrows Girls' and 'On the Dunes.' But I still say that Dutch band Lo Van Corp sound just like the original studio Steely Dan when they played Live (Hey Nineteen and Gaucho). We must accept that most of the great musicians have left the musical zone....like McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison and Elton John. And that we must just relish and enjoy the great tunes that established them.
