OMG. . .Gavin this is full circle for me. I never knew you had covered this. My dad used to have Brel playing in the car when picking me and my sister up on weekends. And now, years later fighting my own custody battles regarding my own kids I hear this rendition of Brel by you, my hero from the rebellion of my youth from when my parents had just finished fighting over custody to me and my Sister. In 1983 I ended up squatting in North London goth glammed and working in Kensington Market. You all saved my soul and I spent many a night escaping to Virgin Prunes in the clubs. Love to you Guggi and David and so many thanks and hugs. Your rendition is particularly poignant as I'm half Belgian too.

As we all know Brel is well known for being multi nuanced with his poetry a mine field of split metaphors/infinitives etc and that's just the French so congrats on the translation. . .I've heard that a lot of people miss the satire and analogy and your translation sounds very authentic.

Great song, wunderful performance! I've watched this on TV in 1989 and it always stayed in my mind. Found the audio years ago, but finally the video is online. Thanks very much, Dave Jansen! Great filming, too. Gavin's intensity and the sensitive following of the pianist is very well captured. One of my all-time favorites!

I still think Brel's is darker and rougher. But then again, covers are there to explore and discover! Everyone can cover a song, and can like the cover over the original for sure!
