This year we celebrated the 50 year anniversary of said goat, we had fire works and everything. and now, just hours after it was put up, you guessed it, it went up in flames.

I love this tradition, some idiots just risk a fine and maybe even a prison sentence for the sake to burn that shit down. It's what makes it interesting. It's funny and so because it's illegal and the fact that the producers of the goat are taking precautions to secure the goat makes it even funnier when it burns down. Hahaha, it's a more than 50 year tradition and I believe it will keep going for a while to come. :)

Most of us locals are ok with it being burned between Christmas and New year's, but it's a bummer when someone burns it down when it's barely been up a week. 🤷♀️☺️

How much do you want to bet that the people who are in charge of preventing the goat from burning, are really the ones who are setting it on fire in the first place? It's a good cover story: "Alright, who did it THIS time?!" "I don't know, but he ran off that way! Heh heh heh."

It would be a good way to attract tourism. A small, obscure town suddenly becomes the home to the legendary Gavel goat.

Even better than just that, the goat was in 2023 eaten to the bone by birds rather than burnt because the straw used still had seeds in it.

I'm not doublechecking until after I type this comment but I believe that was just an attempt. Not succeeded. As a swede not living in Gävle the burning of the goat is something wierd. Without it burning, it doesn't feel like christmas. But at the same time I want it to be a cool and nice way to burn it. Like the flaming arrow with santa and gingerbread man. Not "run, hope over the fence and throw gasoline on it". I've also been thinking privately what would happen if Gävle would say: "if you burn it AFTER christmas eve, we will not call the police". Will people let it stand until christmas eve or just continue burning it whenever they want?

I have now doublechecked. 2010 news paper reports claimed that someone had tried to bribe the security guards so the helicopter could fly in and take it away. The bribe didn't work and both goats survived this year.
