This is the esteemed RD Laing, a brilliant Scottish Psychiatrist who penned The Divided Self. He was born in Govanhill were I hail from, and he was a well known as a prickly character, but he isn’t ‘a drunk Late Late Show guest’. Far from it, he was a highly intelligent, intuitive man. It’s good to see the pompous Byrne taken down a peg or two.

@@jogiff I know, in no job would it be acceptable to turn up drunk. And I'm no prude, I've done every substance under the sun but ffs you don't turn up to any job be it cleaning toilets, washing dishes or doing open heart surgery drunk. It just isn't on. Gay had every right to be angry, it's his show and it was serious stuff they were discussing. It's no wonder he called the man out. They both had a job to do and for any1 here defending him, if you and a colleague had a job to do together and they turned up pissed out of their heads you'd not like it or find it acceptable or anyway within the boundaries of social norms so quit with the bullocks of defending it and saying it's no problem. I remember going to see a comedian in Dublin around 09, it started off funny but the guy got pissed on stage and the whole mood changed. It was the guy from the panel I think, don't know his name. He became pretty rude and aggressive to people and really it stopped being funny and just became tense. It was like listening to a drunk person in pub. I did think it was pretty unprofessional.

Brendan Behan was on Malcolm Mudgerage BBC in the late 50’s promoting his play “The Quare Fellow” The BBC gave him a bottle of whiskey 🥃 before he came on. Brendan was fairly pissed when he came on. It proved great publicity for his play. The ordinary London working people were delighted. Bus 🚌 drivers shouted greetings to Brendan the following morning. “Saw you on TV last night Brendan” The more class conscious snobs were appalled but Brendan did not mind as it did wonders at the box office. Malcolm Muggerage handled it very well asking Brendan to sing “The Auld Triangle” when he was not coherent with his talk. Brendan said later that Malcolm was pissed as well, and it would appear that this was true. After this Brendan did the same on American TV on the Ed Murrow show with Jackie Gleason. Once again it worked with the ordinary workers but the snobbish “Lace Curtain Irish” were appalled. It was great publicity for his play again with the box office. Incidentally Gay did have Oliver Reid on the Late Late when Oliver was drunk. The clip was never shown again which was a pity and it made great TV. I doubt there is a clip of it anywhere. He brought Oliver back a couple of weeks later when he was sober.
