Holding his camera in one hand and his crutches in the other, Palestinian journalist Sami Shehada, has returned to work, one month after his leg was amputated following his injury while covering the war in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Shehada was among other journalists who were injured by an Israeli shell while reporting on Israel’s military offensive in Gaza’s Nuseirat in April of this year.
Shehada, who was covering events for Turkish State Broadcaster TRT Arabic, had his leg later amputated as a result of his injury.
"Today, I have come here to return to my life; to return to the thing that I used to do; the thing that I love which is filming. I (wanted to) return to my camera," said Shehada.
Shehada says that having his leg amputated has brought about new challenges to his life and work.
"Before I was complete and healthy. I had two legs, and I would walk on two legs, I was able to move faster. Now I move more slowly on crutches; on one leg and two crutches, so there is difficulty," he said.
The war in Gaza erupted on October 7 when Hamas militants crossed into Israel from Gaza and killed 1,200 people and took more than 200 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies.
Israel responded with air and artillery strikes which have killed over 35,000 people, Gaza health authorities say, and turned much of one of the most densely populated areas in the world into a wasteland of rubble.
In a statement on December 16, 2023, in response to the death of a journalist in Gaza, the Israeli army said, "the IDF has never, and will never, deliberately target journalists".
