Thanks! Your video on the lightswitch cover sounded a lot like a conversation I had with a co-op at work... She's designing an aesthetic cover plate for an assembly, and she wasn't quite sure how to tolerance the outside of the part Of course surface profile came to the rescue!

I think something like a per unit basis inspection on this is getting to the point where, on any normally machined part, it's probably worth it to just fix the machining error. When we'd get stuff like that at my last shop we would just say "make it perfect and it will be fine" or "don't make it wrong and it will be right"

Yes, I definitely had some strange issues that I wouldn't have seen if I were machining from scratch, however if the standard is about nothing else, it's about being pedantic and nerdy about requirements! Thanks for tuning in to the video!

There's no example of tangent plane modified parallelism in the Y14.5 standard, but does something in it indicate it is not allowed?

Great question. The answer is no, nothing indicates that it's not allowed. Quite the opposite in fact In the 2009 standard, at the end of paragraph 6.5, there is a note that basically says: Though we've only shown this applied to orientation controls, it can apply to other geometric controls So parallelism, perpendicularity, and angularity are allowed explicitly. However, something like surface profile could also make use of tangent plane modifiers!

Good one. The GD&T standard specifies to use tangent plane only for orientation control of a flat surface. Here the considered feature is circular and there are different technique to verify like runout/cylindricity. Also simulating the tangent plane on a curved surface would be similar to measuring with a Vernier caliper at each location. Difficult to imagine CMM inspector capturing cloud data over the irregular circular face and use a tangent plane at each cross section to verify the variation per unit distance.
