I have the GE roof mounted. It does pretty well. It pulls in 45 channels or so reliably and 59 in perfect conditions. I've had it up about a year and a half with no issues yet. As you mentioned, it probably won't last 25 years but for $40 its fine. I liked it because its not huge and obnoxious looking up on the roof.

I kid you not, I just installed this antenna for shits and giggles about 2 weeks ago. I live in a rural area with some pretty large old growth trees blocking my optimal direction. The rabbit ears this replaced were pulling in about 15 channels with 2 that were troublesome. I mounted the GE antenna in the attic, ran the line to the basement and hit a four way. No pre-amp, no booster, nothing. I now get 52 channels and not a single channel with issues. One channel is around 68% the rest are all at least 80%. I couldn't be happier with this antenna. What turned out to just be a test to see how well it would receive in the attic, turned out amazing. I get several crystal clear channels out of Detroit which is about 65 miles away. Never thought for a second that I would give a $39 antenna a 10/10.

@@jamesm568 A pre-amp is used to deal with a long cable run from the antenna to your junction area or single TV set. In this case, the signal strength is great enough that not only did I not need a pre-amp, and I was also able to feed 4 TVs out of a 4 way without any real noticeable loss. It also has nothing to do with the antenna and everything to do with attenuation loss. The reason your channel master pre-amp gave you trouble, was because you were over-driving the signal.

Have installed a number of these for friends and family in the Las Vegas area. We get great reception and around 80 channels. They work fine for us out to about 40 miles (that's as far as I've installed them from the transmitter site). We'll have to see how they hold up with the sun out here, but so far so good after 4 years. In three installs these have replaced satellite dishes and used the old mounting poles. The size is perfect for that. Not every situation works for large antennas, but as always, go with as large as fits.

Just connected this antenna on our roof in the suburban SF Bay Area. It works perfectly. I didn't connect a pre-amp and patched together the cables left hanging from two old satellite antennae. Still, the antenna pulled in over 100 channels, more than twice what I expected. Yes, there are some far-away stations that suffer from clipping audio but I hadn't expected to receive these at all. Picture and audio quality of our local channels are absolutely perfect. Thanks to Antenna Man for all the sound advice around over-the-air TV reception.

I have the GE 33692, which looks identical to the 29884 reviewed in this video at nearly the same price (I bought at around $25 with a Chase card promo 2 years ago, but it's currently $35). It replaced the $100 Antennas Direct ClearStream 4 that my parents had before it. With the ClearStream 4, the signal would always be briefly scrambled whenever a car passed by the house (radio or cellular interference is my guess) but with the GE 33692 my family has been very happy so far with no interference from passing cars. Signal quality for the majority of channels also improved by about 10-15% overall. We live approximately 25 miles from the broadcasting stations in southern California.

Nice review, Tyler - right on the mark. I have this antenna (a slightly older model, actually; the UHF elements are a slightly different shape), and I mounted it in my attic. I think that the relative lightness of the build is the reason to classify this as an 'attic' antenna. I agree with you that it is unlikely to last very long out in the elements. It is a pretty good match for my location and circumstances, since the TV stations around me are clustered to the West and to the East, from about 15 to 45 miles away without much in the way of hills in between. I aimed it East to get the stations I wanted most, and it picks up the stations to the West fine as well with the signal coming in from the back of the antenna. I get about 60 channels, and chose to ignore fully half of them (I don't personally need shopping networks, Spanish language stations, and religious broadcast stations). Like you point out, there is no perfect antenna because everyone's circumstances are different. This antenna works for me, and for the $35 I paid for it I am satisfied.

Anyway, I placed the antenna on a top shelf of a second story closet (on an outside wall) and pointed it due south toward Indianapolis (37 mi, flat terrain). I am receiving 26 channels, crystal clear, from the Indy area and a CBS affiliate station from Lafayette, IN which is due west of me (26 mi). I may not even put it in the attic after all. Well worth the $35 I paid for it.

03/18/23 - Installed the GE 29884-7 antenna today. I live in a rural area 60 miles south of downtown Chicago. I mounted the antenna on the roof using the old satellite dish mount and cable. There are several trees and a large hill in my immediate line of sight. Despite those obstacles and without a booster, I am able to pick up 54 of the 60 channels that are supposed to be within range. WBBM/CBS is very pixelated, but WLS/ABC WGN WTTW WCIU WFLD/FOX come in perfectly. Apparently WBBM/CBS is broadcast via a High VHF signal which requires an antenna with several horizontal sections on a horizontal plane (such as a Channel Master CM-3671 Ultra-Hi Crossfire or Channel Master Pro-Model UHF/VHF), as well as a tall antenna tower and a clear line of sight. So far I am pleasantly surprised with the performance of this little antenna, and satisfied with my purchase.

I'm south of Buffalo and 64 miles straight line from CN Tower in Toronto. This antenna on a good signal day can pull in CFTO VHF 8 and CBLT UHF 20 in my attic. It also has fairly decent omidirectional reception with the local Buffalo stations closer by. The RCA Yagi does a little better job all around. A Hoverman antenna I constructed from 8awg copper wire with four rear reflectors and two VHF reflectors is far superior with both the distant Toronto VHF and UHF where I can pull those stations with a 80% reliability. Only the snowiest of days does it not work well. CHCH is exactly 90 degrees from my aim, the Yagi can grab it and the Hoverman needs a great day with optimal conditions, the GE is 50/50 depending on the day.

I have been getting great results with antenna mounted indoors. I'm shocked. I bought because I found an open box one for $25 and thought I try it. In my area UNC-TV(NC's public broadcaster) moved to new tower that is a problem for me because of the surrounding mountains. Plus their directional antenna has a null to the west in my direction. This is the only antenna I tried that will get a stable signal from them. They are on UHF channel 20. There are four VHF stations in my market, three have strong singal. It picks up all of them. I sometimes get a few glitches on the CBS station whose tower is located 49 miles from my house. The fourth is on VHF channel 2. This antenna is only designed to get VHF channels 7-13 and will not pick up that station. No great loss. It's a relgious station. The only channel I'd like to be to recieve from them is Quest.

I just bought this antenna from Wallyworld. My first antenna was the $11 one with a $12 amp, both from Onn at Walmart. I got 16 perfectly clear channels with that setup. I didn’t think I could get any more channels because I’m in the mountains in central PA. I just installed this GE antenna and got the same 16 channels with better strength, plus 6 new channels from Pittsburgh. Those transmissions are a 67-mile straight line to my house. I can receive those six extra channels just fine now, but I still need the amp installed to use them. I’m sure there are better antennas, but I don’t want to piss of the HOA with a giant antenna on my roof. Even though there are supposedly laws to prevent them from stopping me, I can understand it from a neighbor’s perspective. This little one fits neatly in the corner of my top deck, mounted the the deck floor behind the banister.

I guess the antennas performance really depends on where you live... I live in Central FL (Near the ocean) So plastic parts is a real plus for me. I rarely get more than 3 years out of any antenna because of the rust/corrosion problems being close the ocean and the salt air. I have this antenna mounted in my attic as a backup during high winds of the Hurricanes...All my local channels are about 60-80 miles from me in Orlando. I used this antenna during our last 2 Hurricanes (Ian and Nicole) and all my local channels came through crystal clear with very little loss of signal or even noticeable pixelation during both storms, For that reason I highly recommend it.
@Robb403
4 жыл бұрын
I think they call these cheap ones attic antennas because of an inherent flaw in the plastic. If you live in areas that have really cold periods in the winter, like here in Ohio, the extreme cold makes the plastic quite brittle. I had one like it which held up fine all summer even in 60 mph winds. But, we had a wind storm when it was below freezing and it snapped like a twig, hit the ground and shattered into pieces. That gray plastic is probably the cheapest injection molded material they can find. So, I'm sure it will work OK outside. At least for a little while. But, if you can make it work in your attic, it will last a lot longer. You get what you pay for.

They market it as an attic antenna because some people think antennas are unsightly and ugly. Being able to hide it in the attic is the draw for them. That is also why it is made sort of flimsily. If it is in the attic, it wont need to weather the elements like an outdoor antenna. If you place an antenna in an attic, the structure of the house will limit the signal significantly. I've heard it is common to just assume half the signal is lost but it really depends on the amount of metal and thickness of the walls compared to outside of them.

I miss the days these "Digital" antennas accounted for LOW VHF channels (2 - 6). The Terk 1080i indoor one on my bedroom TV, and a Terk outdoor (forget model) both have full-sized VHF elements, which helps getting WGBH 2 (channel 5 physical) Boston. Makers these days don't account for low VHF.

Low VHF was licensed to commercial/industrial 2- way radio quite a while ago with very few exceptions in the USA.

Low VHF is still used in many markets across the US. It's used in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, NYC, Boston, and many other areas. I don't know where the rumor came from that it was repurposed for other uses.

@@AntennaMan I think it because when digital television was first being talked about, President Bush said that what he wanted to with low VHF. He wanted to turn it over to first responders.

Tyler, I believe the point of calling something an "attic" antenna probably is because it is smaller and will easily fit. Also, the durability factor you mentioned will not be one if kept indoors. BTW, do you use a relief map when assessing a customer's reception situation?

Do you think that Televes is the best Bang for The Buck?

They seem somewhat expensive, I bought an RCA ANT3037XR for $60 works fine for me.

It's say it's worth it IF you need a preamp and LTE filter all together. Those combined with a decent antenna will cost about the same as the Televes antenna and you may not have the best build quality.

I have a very similar GE attic antenna in my attic. The one I have has almost no plastic. It works well for me. I needed to get channel 69 in Allentown and am 54 miles away in SJ. I get it when clear weather but used to get much better before the recast when it went to RF channel 9 ( VHF). I will disagree that the antenna would work on a roof. Yes it would get signal but no way would the antenna stand up to weather, it would be pretty easily destroyed in a harsh storm. Very good attic antenna. From 20 miles SE of Philly I get 90 stations.

WFMZ is launching a repeater on RF 7 in a few months so hopefully you'll get them better then.

@@AntennaMan hope so but RF7 still VHF so do not have high Hopes. I use Locast when I cannot get signal and that works pretty well, made a donation to Locast and that seemed to help , at least I do not get interruption at every 20min now. Thanks again for spreading your knowledge!

I have this antenna and it is mounted about 10 feet above the ground. I live in zip code 75803 so I don't have many options receiving broadcasts as they are too far away. I get channel 19 and 56 well and they have all the stations i'm really interested in. I'm sure if I raised the height of the antenna, I would get more channels. Thanks for your review. I was very interestted in learning if someone else got the same or better reception.

You can try mounting it higher but you may need a larger antenna. Custom antenna recommendations can be requested at the link below: antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

Just purchased this one last week to see if it would perform better than the Clearstream Max-V that I have in the attic. The GE did not perform as well. It picked up fewer channels, and also seemed to have a more directional pickup pattern...so some of the channels became fringe, especially one on VHF. I'm 40 miles from most transmitter sites and have to go through some tall trees. If someone is closer to transmitters, this antenna might work fine for them.

I own that same model of antenna and I’ve been very happy with it. I took down a Direct TV antenna, mounted it to the Direct TV mast and connected it to their wiring that they left behind. I’m about 50 miles from most of suburban Houston’s antennas and I pick up over 100 stations after rescanning with a cheap inline RF amplifier. It’s also a little smaller than the Direct TV antenna and not noticeable at all from the outside. Have any of the antennas you’ve tried been able to pick up WBNG, which is not far from your market?

WBNG does not reach me. I live in Bethlehem. If you are having trouble getting them consider adding this VHF antenna to your existing setup: amzn.to/2MUCqni

Question: I have an antenna which works well. We just moved and the new home lacks a bunch of coax. The antenna connects to Coax. If I connected a MoCa 2.5 transmitter to the antenna, do you think it would work to send the digital signal wirelessly across the home to a MoCa 2.5 received plugged into the back of the TV?

I am so glad to know there's no such thing as a HD antenna its drilled in my brain when I do get my next one. I am considering the omni directional one by Channel Master it looks sturdy but it is small .Would it be quite sufficient ? I live in the Toronto area north of Lake Ontario and all the channels come across there from the western NY area. It doesn't have a amp built in . I do have a channel master preamp the 7778 one .Not using it as of now but when getting another antenna( passive ) one I like to use that again.

I have this antenna and it worked great in my office but it work not so well in its final location (in attic). It seem to start pickup noise and/or interference up there. I ended up using an antenna direct combiner (eu385cf) that seem filter interference with this antenna pointing at 3 VHF stations at 22km NE and another style of antenna for a UHF station at 12KM S.

Is this antenna better than the Channel Master METROtenna 40, I heard you mention channel master but wasn't sure if you were referring to the Metrotenna 40. I actually have this GE Pro antenna but have problems receiving UHF channel 34 vs VHF 11 and 13 and was considering the channel master, thanks!

Tyler, if you ever get a chance to watch the Apple TV show, "For All Mankind" be sure to watch out for a cameo this antenna makes on a lunar rover later in the series. It's the scene with Aleida riding in a rover, to be specific. Funny thing, on the real rover from the 70's, nothing, absolutely nothing looked like this antenna. The "For All Mankind" producers used it as a prop, and a funny one at that if you recognize it and know it's true purpose.

I have this antenna for a little while . And it gets excellent signal, picture and quality and gets many many channels up to 65 to 70 ish channels. But now it gets weird as in gets 0 channels and I've tried rescanning it many times and still gets 0 channels.. idk what's wrong with it or do I need new cables or need to adjust it in order to get back all the channels I used to have? What should I do?

I have the exact antenna. I get the local CBS, NBC, PBS, & FOX affiliates but after rotating the antenna to every near by and distant tower I still have yet to get my local ABC affiliate (by the way I live only less than 15 minutes from a city that carries all 5 affiliates channels in Kansas - very little geographical obstructions).
