I just encountered this exact same problem and took apart this exact same fridge yesterday. The problem had nothing to do with ice buildup. The problem is that the evaporator fan blades are hitting the plastic fan housing cover. The cover is that angled piece of plastic with the vents in it. I believe this is a bonafide GE design flaw to put the housing really close to the fan, and in a vulnerable place where it can be easily pushed in. The best I can tell is that the fan cover was slightly bowed out when new to keep it from hitting the fan blades. Even still, it's only about 1/8" away from the fan. Over time the plastic has sagged and is now close enough for the fan blades to hit it, and making that awful sound. One solution is to slightly lower the fan motor assembly which will also lower the fan itself and further away from the housing. You can do this by inserting plastic spacers between the fan motor bracket and the plastic shelf it is hanging from. Another option is to heat up that part of the plastic fan cover with a hair dryer or heat gun, and then persuade it to bow out again.

For my fridge, DoableDIY is correct. I took the cover off and no ice. The fan blade is rubbing. Design issue. Probably some summer engineer's project to design. I put in a make-shift spacers for the sides of the cover to keep it from being so close to the fan blade in the middle. Although not 100% solution, I think it will be okay till other things fail.

Took apart the ice machine and behind the cover for the fan blade, I placed two one-eighth thick washers. Reassembled, and this did the trick. Thanks for your help.

After reading these comments, I just banged on the plastic cover with the vents. I immediately heard ice breaking off and falling inside, and now I have peace and quiet! Thank you for the suggestions! I was about to lose my mind!! 🙃

I had the same problem with the same refrigerator. The evaporator fan is a friction fit to the motor shaft, and it eventually slides up the shaft toward the housing and rubs. The fan finally popped off completely on mine. It's not a difficult fix but it takes a little while. Unplug or turn off the breaker to the refrigerator. Remove the icemaker, all shelves, plastic brackets on each side of the freezer compartment and the evaporator coil cover. Remove the cover over the freezer light bulbs, remove the bulbs, push the bulb sockets through the housing. Remove the screws holding the fan housing to access the evaporator fan, push the fan down on the shaft and reassemble. It's a good idea to take pictures during disassembly so you remember where everything goes.

Same issue! I pushed the fan back down on the shaft with about an inch of the shaft sticking up above the fan. I cut two notches in the shaft directly above the fan using a Dremel cutting wheel, then secured a zip tie tightly around the notches to prevent the fan from being able to rise up again. Thanks for sharing how you went about getting access to the fan!

Hey guys, what I did. I used a blow dryer for about 10mins, and pointed in the fan area. The noise was reduces from a loud engine, to normal running mode. Thanks guys, you saved me 1 night of sleep and worry. I was going to call the repair guy. But defrost the fan may have fixed the problem. Let's see for how long.

Yes, I have the same refrigerator. Same noise problem! It's been frustrating so I replaced the fan thinking it would go away. The new fan came with a different plug than the original. Once past that I installed thinking the noise would be gone. Once new fan was installed, the noise still was there. I did read one of the comments that stated there was a 1/8" from hitting the plastic. I can believe that. The noise does reside with the fan because when you push the plastic cover to hit the fan it does clarify that the noise is definitely coming from the fan. So we do have to live with this. GE design flaw for sure. Best of luck guys!

Thanks for the comments below - I was just going to use my hairdryer - couldn't open where the fan was but I knew it was behind the white plastic cover - while I went to get my hairdryer my husband got a tool (pliers but was looking for a 1/4" hex nut) to take off the plastic cover behind the ice cub reservoir which we had just taken out and voila the sound stopped immediately. Apparently the fan was somehow hitting the cover - luckily the fan is made of plastic (we think) because while my husband was trying to take the cover off his finger briefly touched the fan - (he's OK) never took the cover off all the way - never saw the fan as it was swirling around - anyway - all is well now for us. Whew - that saved a lot had we called a service man. Luckily it didn't cost my husbands finger.

PFSS2MIYC SS has been a lemon from the start. The only assistance I got from the warranty repairs is no repairs. The noise is now overwhelming. I am doing a reno and really wanted to wait to purchase a new fridge. ANYTHING but not GE after the poor advice and service. I usually never comment so boldly about a product. So disappointed that I cannot go on with the loud noise any longer. I defrost the entire fridge for 2 days at a time. It works great for one month, then it returns.

I have the same one and we had it about 9 yrs. I put boiling water in a spray bottle and shot the fan and heard ice break off. Has been a week and the noise is gone. Every night I would go down and beat the shit out of it waking up my Wife and 3 Kids I saved 1,000 though.

I have the same problem. If you press the fan cover with your finger the noise is louder. So I fixed it by heating up the plastic cover of the fan with hair drier while pulling out the cover just to have a good clearance from the fan blade. My refrigerator operates properly after the repair. Hope this help you.

Mine was doing the exact same thing in the freezer. I took the light cover and fan shroud off, cleared some ice and put everything back a little more snug, it stopped after that. Make sure you kill the power first by the way.

I received several replies indicating that the noise is a result of ice build-up on the fan blades. I repositioned food in the freezer in an effort to create better air flow. I am not sure if it is coincidental, but the noise ceased the same day that the food was repositioned. The noise has not returned since, but I will continue monitoring.

Ours did the same thing. I saw no ice, so I suspected that the plastic cowling had sagged. I bridged the cowling with a small stick and ran a "jack screw" through the stick so that a metal hook could be lowered into the center slot of the cowl. The metal hook is wider than it is long so that it can be lowered into the slot and then the screw is turned 90 degrees. I held the screw with needle nose pliers while I just slightly tightened the wing nut until the noise stopped. I painted a red stripe on one side of the screw in order to indicate when the hook is crossways in the cowl's slot. The hook is actually a small piece of metal that I cut from a small washer. The small screw is soldered to the hook. I was going to attach photos but I can't do it here.

Ice build up at the fan inside the freezer compartment. Mine had a leak from the ice cube filler tube that was leaking down the inner wall and building up at the fan. Defrosting and fixing the leak solved the issue.

I have a 2013 GE Profile and have been struggling with all types of problems; one of them is this awful noise which began before I had to replace the compressor. I've waste so much money trying to fix mine and replacing food, that I can tell you enough how mad I am till this day. For the third time my refrigerator is out of service, more waste of food, more time waiting for GE to repair it and more frustration; and because it is not on warranty client has to keep wasting, time, food and money for a problem GE should repair at their coste, because these refrigerators all came with the same problems. I will ever buy a GE refrigerator again.

I have to unplug mine for piece of mind. Ive had four service calls for broken down parts, now that the extended warranty has begun, service call count have reset that would count towards lemon rule. For 2 thousand dollars the parts like the fans are really cheap and noist and run all the time because they are not up to their task,in my opinion.Mistake!

More than likely the noise will come back I have a Frigidaire Gallery Series that I bought on Craigslist did the same thing it was making the noise and then by the time I took the top of the freezer apart to try and find the fan it stopped but a couple days later it came back so I went to the bottom of the freezer and took the panel off inside and found the fan and there was a bunch of ice build-up on the fan so more than likely according to the videos that I've watched it's going to be a reoccurring thing every so often so each time it occurs you might want to just try and take the panels off find out where your fan is my fan is on the bottom inside the freezer and make sure you unplug the freezer my fan just fits in there or sits in there on a metal shroud so I was able to take the Shroud and shake it and knock all the ice out I watch the video where one guy took a hair dryer and blew it through the vent holes inside tooth all the ice out hope this helps

I am reading that a common cause of this noise is that the grommet which holds the fan in place wears down. www.partselect.com/PS963756-GE-WR02X12008-Evaporator-Fan-Grommet-Red.htm?SourceCode=12&ModelNum=PSS26MSRDSS
