The ring rolling of an 8620 steel gear blank was modeled in DEFORM-3D. The first animation sequence shows the deforming workpiece, tools and roll contact. The second animation sequence shows roll contact (left) and contours of effective strain (red is higher) on sliced and whole sections (right).
Ring rolling simulations represent years of development on an extremely challenging process. A specialized system has been implemented with the mesh design, step updating, finite-element engine, inter-object contact and simulation control optimized for ring rolling. Unlike most solutions for ring rolling, ‘artificial’ assumptions are kept to an absolute minimum. Ring rolling simulaton is fast, accurate and easy to use as compared to brute force solution methods.
