I’ve been using Teravail tires for about 2 years, they truly designed tires to go with wider rims. I’m currently running the 29x2.8” L&S Coronado on front on a i35 WTB Asym. rim and a 29x2.5 L&S Ehline’s with Rimpact in back. I do go really low air pressure about 14-16psi. #1 they’re amazing and a lot tougher on rocks than I thought. They last and the only issue I had was a stick that punctured the tire. The supple feel they give my fully rigid SS is better than I have had with any other tires. I’ve used the Durable casing Teravail’s too and didn’t like them as much but they definitely provide you flat and rim protection and you can also run low pressure without tire inserts and they stay really stiff.

I must be missing something about having your dropper and also having the giant dry bag over the tire. It appears that the dry bag is almost the same height as the saddle at full seatpost extension, but maybe not? I just don’t see the dropper being that valuable if you still can’t get your center of gravity over the rear axle. Maybe it’s the on/off the bike capability that’s really valuable? I’m sure I am missing something here.

There's a lot in this video for me to be happy about. Its good to know your Teravails have been working so well. I have a Kennebec/Cumberland 29x2.6 combo on the shelf for whenever I'm able to get out bikepacking this year on my Ogre. I did go with the durable ver simply because, grad student budget and I'll sacrifice some comfort if it means less chance of having to buy a new tire soon. Also, just before lockdowns started I managed to piece together all the Advent X stuff for around $140. Lucked out with some ebay finds. I've not put it on yet because I sort of feel like I should wear out the current parts first but, I really should just go ahead and throw it on. Relieved to see your positive experiences. If you don't mind fielding a question. Are 27.5x3 going to go the way of the 29x3? Should we expect 2.8 to be the standard? Follow up, given your experience in more shifty desert riding. I'm looking to do a run of the Baja Divide as a finishing my PhD celebration/decompression time. I was planning to get a new set of wheels built and run the 27.5x3 Coronados. But, now they're out of stock, though, I've got 1.5 years for them to come back before heading out. But, if 2.8 ends up being where we land with plus tires at 27.5, would it still be worth it to build up a wheelset for 2.8s? Or, would better rollover on 29x2.6 outweight whatever float over sand I could get on the smaller 2.8s? Thanks!

Steve, or others :) Since moving to a hardtail... The feedback from rocks and roots are even more pronounced for flat pedals. Traction doesn't seem to be a problem but sole stiffness is. Have been using the mid top addidas terrex swift R2 shoe with somewhat of a stiff midsole, but doesn't seem to be supportive enough. I know they are more of a hiking shoe, but would you have any experience with the five ten trailcross series? Wasn't sure if the soles would be similar to the current shoe, or should one move to the impact model? With bikepacking in CO we hike a lot, but releiving the serious pain from rocky sections takes priority. Any suggestions?

In hindsight, I would have gone with a solid fork with built in cargo “bosses”. But….I do enjoy the suspension…if for no other reason that I don’t want a pan old Navy aircraft” accident to “flare my back pain”. Did you consider mounting anything on your fork? Also, you’re the second “KZitem rider” running a rear rack. Your explanation about stabilizing a load on the rack, versus the swaying load of a hanging bag…makes sense. Also, do you ride with a computer (i.e. a GARMIN OR wahoo type unit). Again, Bravo-Zulu….well done on your presentation! Stay safe!

Something I've been thinking of for a while is to have a failsafe for rear luggage. Acquire a bag/system for underseat mounting, but put the straps/hardware inside the bag and only use this as plan B. Then get a rack and use that as the main solution. If that should break beyond repair, you already have a failsafe so you will easily get out of there. Minor inconveniences quickly can become a big deal when you're far away from civilization.

Great video! very informational! I used to the run the juice bottle as well on the down tube for all the reasons you've mentioned. I moved to the 2 liter Kleen Kanteen for durability and it's still relatively light weight. The Thule rack was originally designed in New Zealand by a company called Free Load. They sold their design to Thule. I've used the original FreeLoad rack on a full sus bike and they are impressive. I moistened the ratchet straps before install then tightened when they were wet and when they dry they get another degree of tightness without have to ratchet tighter and and stress to the system.
