Believe it or not I've had clients who specifically ask for old amp sim and POD tones from around 2010, becasue they are considered vintage now. It's what that generation grew up with and they actually prefer them to real tube amps.

Another mark in favor of the podxt: unlike a lot of digital gear these things are super easy to open up to clean the pots, which are accessible without having to disassemble anything. Nothing beats it for rocking out in 5.1 stereo through your home theatre system! I can't believe they aren't giving away the upgrade packs for free at this point. I bought the metal pack back in the day for I think $50, and admittedly they sound way better to me than the stock ones.

Regarding the Bass PODxt - I recently took mine out of cold storage to inspire a friend who's starting out. Although I had forgotten how to work it, I could do a usable tone in less than 10 minutes. It sounded better than I remember, too. Really brought the crappy combo we were using (closer) to life. Not a DarkGlass, but hey - 's fine. Then again - no high gain amps...

The PODxt was my live rig for about six or seven years. I had the 2.0 beforehand, but I found it unusable in regard to high gain tones. The xt was the one that sold me becasue of the ability to make chains, and the stomp box boost section really tightened up the tones, as did the off axis mic option which cut out a lot of fizz (Morbid Angel fan here). For stage shows, I plugged straight into the PA and it sounded great, and later on I used it with a rack power amp. I also used it to record demos in the house as well, which was a great bonus. Creatively, it's a pretty fantastic package, and while the modeling tech isn't even as good as free amp sims today, I still have a soft spot for it. Line 6 themselves are crooks though, and I experienced some of the shittiest customer service from them when their software basically broke my POD. They got really greedy with the amp packs too, so I'll probably never buy one of their products again.

Came across a "pro" one with all the packs back in the day for cheap. Never got rid of it. It sits in my rack hooked to a kemper via spdif. I use it as an interface to record when I'm practicing, working on ideas. It never fails at that and the quality is totally fine. Can't get any money for it now so not getting rid of it. To be honest it's given me lot less trouble as an interface than other popular interfaces. Works with all OS I have without hiccups.

Im impressed, theres some great tones in there. I was a BOSS ME guy, had the 50 then the 70, then the 25 and finally the 80. One of the things I liked most about the ME modelers was I could go right into the front of the amp with it, I really cant get what im looking for from my Atomic AmpliFire pedal threew the front of the amp so I give the ME credit. Theyre certainly retaining their resale value, cant get one for less the $190-$200 used, they can be found for $240 new.

I get why you don’t like it. But for me, I wrote my best riffs using PODxt, going straight to a shitty Ibanez combo. I bought a used one in 2007 and went from having no effects and shitty sound to having shit-ton of effects and "good" sound. I made most of my guitar playing progress on it. Effects inspired me to dip my toes in new genres, made me play in a new way. That’s exactly what you need in those formative years. Thank to usb interface, I’d learned my first recording steps and recorded many demos. Plus you didn’t mention the user preset library, which was everything! Bussiness-wise, I remember there were promo-weeks all the time, I bought a combo of Metal pack and FX junkie add-ons for 29 usd. So yes, it doesn’t make sense to keep offering these, but I think they probably just forgot about it. Who buys those anyway? I think it would take one meeting to agree on letting all those obsolete add-ons to be free for download. And all string instruments on Ordo ad-Chao by Mayhem were recorded using this!

I am looking for two qualities in a device like this: portability and ease of use. If I can take this around the house or to some other venue with one hand and minimal cords, that's a win. If I can get the tone I'm looking for in 10 minutes or less when practice time is at a premium, that's a win. The longer I have to scroll through menus or learn basic operating principles, the less inclined I am to use the device. I'm a family man with a full time job and I am going to night school. My Boss GT100 gets no use other than the presets because I won't give it the hours it takes to immerse myself in its intricate COSM programming. Perhaps it's me and I'm just stubborn. If you are learning guitar as I am, good luck and enjoy the process.

Rick Feith well, now I’m running the HD through a small mixer at home and monitors. Since I’ve been exploring hell a lot about frequencies and equalizers, a new relationship with my Pod I’m going through...I wanted to get rid of my strat pickups they didn’t sound straty...Hell, after some eq, voilá... right what I had in my head and the cleans are just beautiful. I used the XT a lot back in the days when I was very into Harem Scarem and Lesperance style and sound. The Modern High Gain was exactly that sound but I never got the same tone with the X3. With the HD I only try to sound like me, to complement the bass sound and kick drums and most importantly, sound strat :p Can’t help it, mate!

I've got the HD500 original, got about 8 presets made off 4 core tones. A squeezed low gain Floydy lead with TONS of sustain, a Petrucci like clean chorus with some nice ambience, perfect for those haunting arpeggio chord rings, a quackier clean that sounds AMAZING with a Strat, a very classic scooped rhythm Boogie crunch tone juiced with a screamer and 2 EQs with the 8ms delay trick, a KILLER Recto lead sound..creeping on Mark IV with killer overtones and harmonics and a stereo delay...plus an identical preset with a phaser and flanger toggled out front, and also one with a wah turned on. Those are all built from a single 12+ time revised patch...as well as one more, with a huge hall verb and long soupy delay with the volume pedal out front...very JP sounding. I have the HD500 running in stereo, line level studio direct through a pair of SV100 heads into the FX loop return to a pair of 412 cabs. It sounds STELLAR. All Mogami cables, a ESP, a Jackson and an old Charvel, a Strat and a Schecter 7 string. It took years to get it sounding this big and sexy. All crunch is Recto and cleans are Blackface...all with EXTENSIVE EQ added and delay tweakery. I even have 3 different volume levels of the set...a night time, a low volume and a high volume, it makes a difference kids, make your tones at the volume they will be used at. I really don't have a bad thing to say...I got Dream Theater and classic Metallica crunch on lock, with a lead tone that you can play with for 4 hours without touching anything.

I used it for about 12 years. Its so much better to use it with Line 6 Edit software thats free. Make sure you have the 3 model packs as well. You can really make much better editing choices in that software. I hated using it thru and amp though. It just sounded generic so I ran it directly using and adapter stereo chord directly into my laptop PCI sound card Audigy 2zs out of the headphones output. Then into a small pC power amp that ran into some 100 watt speakers I took from a DENON unit. This allowed me to record and listen and 24 bit using the Audigy 2 software that came with that. It was pretty damn lous to play in m y room and not kill the neighbors with my amps. In fact all the sounds of mine you hear on my channel of this one are used with this PODxt. You can even use different settings for the Wahs inthe editing software.

Set the bad knobs to zero. Only operate them with the software. That fixes most of that problem. Set all buggy knobs to zero. "Channel volume" I think is the only one you have to have set above zero...all the rest can be set to zero. Or clean your knobs... or do both.

Nope, no metal pack on this one. The X3 comes with it pre-installed as discussed, and I purchased the HD Metal Pack for the POD HD videos since it was on sale. Thats why I recommend to skip this generation entirely in favor of an X3, if you like the tones compared to HD and Helix.

You'll need a decent processor stand alone graphics and usb 3 ports in addition to this you will also need a usb3 capable soundcard/ audio interface.
