I own a 1x12 Mesa Rectoverb, and it sounds amazing. You get what you pay for with their amps, because amps are their specialty. Cloning speaker cabinets electronically is outside of their domain, and it shows on this product. The lesson is, if you are good at something, don't assume you'll automatically be good at an unrelated / poorly related thing. In other-words, specialize and focus on one thing, and one thing only if you want to be the best at it.

Totally agree. This product is a proper lemon and no mistake. It seems Mesa are frantically scrabbling for a share of the ever growing can sim market and badly missing the mark. They clearly don't have the necessary knowledge and talented personnel to get into this area of the market. It's understandable, given that the days of miikng up physical amps in a recording context are getting seriously numbered. They need to stay in their lane and stick to producing top flight amps, or put the necessary money into research and development in order to come up with a decent piece of gear.

This was way more interesting than i thought it would be, and it also explains why all my direct recording attemps sound like shit even compared to my horrible mic and micing skills. Seems like about 80% of the cab clone's shit sound is the load box, not the "speaker sim", it sounds at least useable with a speaker connected acting as the load. Nobody talks about the importance of loadboxes, this was absolutely eye opening. Thanks a lot, idk if this means anything to you but you're to audio what buildzoid is to overclocking for me.

It would be great if you did a comparison between the Two Notes Captor and the Suhr Reactive Load
@ethanspaulding6067
5 жыл бұрын
Two notes is a reactive load, but it only models the top end reactance of a cabinet (small inductor). To create the low end reactance of a cabinet is expensive (Large inductor) . There may be some good reasons to not model the low end response. For instance, if your low end reactance is similar to a Mesa OS 4x12 with resonance between 90-100Hz and you wish to use a green back loaded cab impulse response (Resonance 124Hz-140Hz), you may end up with a dual low end resonance. Not that a reactive load couldn't be designed with switchable low end response, which I do believe exists on the market. Keep up the good work Ryan!
@LucifdeLuther
5 жыл бұрын
If you use load box which mimics low end resonance, you should use "flat" IR, like Own Hammer IRs. Neutral IRs can be captured even with conventional tube power amps like: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1W6Yz5doeqh7mJg Device used in video even cheaper than Cab Clone :) Another review of REACT:IR: kzitem.info/news/bejne/x6GL26F-nHqdfqQ

Good video, nice to see a discussion of cab impedence and it’s effect on the sound (and feel) of an amp. To throw another wrench in the works, changes to the impedence curve may have a bigger or smaller effect on the sound and feel depending on the amp. Higher negative feedback in the power amp will reduce the impedence curve’s effect on the sound, and vice versa. Try the Recto, flip between vintage mode (negative feedback in the poweramp) and modern mode (nfb loop disconnected), modern mode sounds just awful with a resistive load, or a reactive load box with a poor curve.

Plague Scythe Studios How usable is the Mesa cabclone for practicing with headphones? Is the tone any good? I'm drawn to the Mark V 25 or 35 because they have this capability built in (or I could consider a full size head and add a cabclone or other as an alternative for reduced volume or silent practicing) but if it would just sound like crap, I would no longer consider this.

I have a Mesa Cab Clone. I get a decent sound out of it when recording. I set the knob all the way to -30dB and have my Mesa Dual Rectifier master volume pretty high. Overall, I'm pretty happy happy with it. I was just playing through my friend's Axe Fx 3 and through headphones, they sounded similar. That being said, I found your video very informative and I agree that the CabClone doesn't even come close to my Mesa 4x12 cabinet with an SM57 on it. I spent $300 on my CabClone and I don't feel completely ripped off. But I do feel like Mesa didn't meet my expectations. Especially considering everything else they put out is gold.

If this was releaed back in the day, pre reactive loadboxes and IR loaders, I can see this being well-liked. The problem is this thing is pretty much obsolete these days. Impulse responses capture the sound of a cab MUCH MUCH more accurately than a preset EQ curve like the Cab Clone.
@idanshahar
5 жыл бұрын
I had it, it sucked. When using it while connected to a real cab, at least then you're getting a reactive load.. I had a rehersal where I recorded the line out (non cab sim) with a cab connected and at home put an IR on it, and it was a cool addition to the recording of the rehersal.

I actually own a CabClone and agree the cab sims are pretty bad. It sounds ok when used with IRs tho. Would you say that adding EQ to approximate the impedance curve that resistive load boxes lack (like you did at 14:13) results in a sound similar to a reactive load box? All I'm really looking for at the moment is a good option for direct recording.
@PlagueScytheStudios
4 жыл бұрын
For home recording, adding the reactivity EQ curve in post is close enough for a mix with a good impulse response. I feel as if there's still something missing compared to a real speaker load in terms of dynamics or perhaps harmonic distortion, but I don't have the tools to prove whether that's true or all in my head.

Hey, I have posted once to Mesa if I can use the slave out on a Mesa JP-2C as a recording out to use a speaker sim , but they said it doesn’t work, as its ment to send the signal to another power amp. But you seem to do well. Does the slave out on mesa amps capture the power section including the transformer?
@PlagueScytheStudios
4 жыл бұрын
Whoever told you that is plain wrong. Yes, it's meant to "slave out" to another power amp, but that amp is supposed to be of the solid state or neutral tube variety for more power or wet/dry/wet applications (i.e. it doesn't introduce significant tone coloration). The slave out does indeed include the power section at an attenuated level, so using it with IRs is perfect.
@Liquifireguitargeek

Plague Scythe Studios Thank you very much! I have one last question though, I have a tornado captor 8 ohm at home, but Think about wether I am going to need it for that setup once I get the JP-2c since I could use its inbuilt cab clone as load and use the slave out to bypass the shitty analog cab sim. But since you showed the captor sounds so much better as load, I don’t know if the in built cab clone is any better. For exactly this content and your info and answers this is currently my favorite KZitem channel in its category 👌💪✌️🙏

A load with only few high wattage resistors is unsuitable for many guitar players. You can experiment it by your own, by bying few 25 or 50 Watt low wattage resistors and in any case you'll be disappointed. Because you'll have to deal with inductors, capacitors and resistors to get the best results. It's just pain in the ass!

The reactive load plus speaker emulation was pretty damn bad sounding, although the Captor you compared it to also sounded pretty shitty just in a different way, so I do wonder what the point of the comparison there is. The mesa actually had nicer sounding mids, whereas the Captor was either way too scooped, or very sharp sounding. Also, the graph at around the 10 minute mark is actually really hard to see, especially on a phone. The dark blue line has almost no contrast against the background, so i almost didn't even see it at first. Next time I suggest either using brighter colors or thicker lines! still, besides that, fantastic job as always!
