Thanks for making this video! I just bought a backpack for my dog and I've been really interested in seeing what people put in their dog packs. My plan is for Smokey to carry his sleeping bag, food, water, poopy bags, treats, and an ID card in case he gets separated from me.

As far as burying poop and all the naysayers.... just remember, where bears. Coyotes, squirrels and every other creature goes to the bathroom, and they dont bury it.

Animals eating from the wild digest the food they sourced locally. Our dogs eat hard, dry factory processed food where none of it comes from the wild, so it's all a foreign object once digested an left behind. Most parks have signs explaining this.

I spent 5 days last week in Rocky Mountain National Park where I hiked over 40 miles. It was awesome! I can't wait for cooler days here in the SE to get back into doing local hikes.

@@SeagrasstoSassafras All of it was just wonderful: the pleasant temperatures and low humidity, the smell of the forest, the waterfalls, the animals (elk, pika, marmot, weasel, even saw a large bobcat), eating wild raspberries, hiking in the aspen/ponderosa pine forest, etc.

hi, I really enjoy watching your video, I have looked for the Top paw 3 in 1 jacket and I have not been able to find it? Do you have any other suggestions I like the fleece how it detaches from the outer shell of the jacket. I also would like to try to make the sleeping pad the one that looks like bubble wrap on the inside of it too with the car shield. Where would I find those directions and materials?

Hey there! Yeah I think the Top Paw jacket may have been discontinued. Pet Smart currently has a similar product: Arcadia Trail 3-in-1 Dog Coat. It has the same outer shell and removable fleece layer design. If you go to the blog post linked in the description, I have the info for how I made the dog pad out of a sunshield at the bottom of the post. Hopefully all this helps!

Just something to think about before you dip into your mushers wax because you forgot chapstick. Your dog’s feet are on the ground. The very nasty ground. All that dirt and bacteria. Just be careful

😅 I don't apply it directly from the tube to their feet. I put however much I think I’ll need on the back of my hand first.

@@SeagrasstoSassafras Mine too. Off leash, we noticed a rabbit at the same time about 7’ away. I told her “no” and she didn’t chase. Had I not seen it, she’d have gone for it. But if she startles a bear, she’s either gonna get chased away from me or draw the bear to me.-both bad. I’m whistle training her to keep her close. At camp, she’s instinctively on guard and won’t leave. I put a red LED on her collar so I can see her at night. But she goes to bed at 9 🤣

I will check out that pack. I really like your tip for the mushers cream. I have been carrying in a plastic bag and your idea is much better. Something I have been carrying but never have used is that powder that clouts blood in case my dog lost a nail or paws get cut. Fortunately I have never used it. I have been carrying my dogs gear because of past pack issues. I would be willing to give this one a try. Thanks

I've tested out a few other brands like Mountainsmith and AlphaPak since but it is still my favorite dog backpack! I need to add blood clotting powder to their first aid kit! It's better to have something like that and never need it than to really need it and not have it.

@@SeagrasstoSassafras Thanks for sharing your experience with this pack. Finding a good pack for a dog can be a real challenge, especially for those of us who are taking our dogs on extended trips. I would really love not carrying all of my dog’s gear and especially her food. I am planning out our trip next summer for the Colorado Trail. I will order this pack and give it a test. What brand of dehydrated food do you feed your dog. I ran into a man on the AT and he had hiked 1,700 miles on the AT with his dog and he said dehydrated food lacked the nutrient needed for a long hike. Not being a vet I have no clue. I have used a mix of high protein and fat food with a little dehydrated food. My dog will eat pretty much anything but I want her well fed and I take very good care of her. I definitely want to drop some weight for the Colorado Trail. Take care and thanks for making these videos.

Burying poop??? If we found a choice rock we’d just throw some dirt on it . What is the wilderness for at that point???
@victoriawhitehead5724
5 ай бұрын
Mainly because dogs aren't in that habitat naturally, so if animals in that area eat it they can get exposed to new bacteria. This is also why some may have a no bury rule, as animals can still dig it and eat it that way. :D
@danielcurtis1434

@@victoriawhitehead5724 I understand. The thing is foreign bacteria also train one’s immune system. I suspect it’s more an issue of what domesticated dogs eat abd the nutrients left behind???

Yeah but the amount of dogs and humans that go through the trail is a lot more than what would be there naturally if dogs actually lived there. If every single hiker just had their dog poop in the trail, the trail would be covered by poop in no time. It's doing your due dilligence in keeping the trail clean for others in the future. So please don't just let your dog poop on trail. The last trail I went to had dog poop littered everywhere. Even found dog poop IN THE MIDDLE of the trail. Please don't be that guy. Bring your trash with you, burry your poop, pick up your dog's poop, and leave no trace.
