Only if you need to move quickly from the stop traffic light you should stay in gear because as you have the clutch pedal pressed you are wearing the throw-out bearing unnecessary

@@jjcale1976 I just came back from a road test, and the examiner told me that I should leave the car in gear at intersections, unless I fully stopped with handbrake engaged. She said in case you are rear-ended, this stops you from rolling forward into the intersection.

@@roarlisfang2860I can tell you if you’re rear ended hard enough regardless of whether the handbrake is on or not you will be pushed forward.The difference with handbrake on is you will SLIDE FORWARD NOT ROLL.

Always do neutral if you treasure your clutch bearing for long term.

We agree. If you will be waiting more that about 20 seconds, shift to neutral ant take foot off clutch to rest clutch mechanism (and your leg).

Can you make a video on how you change gear smoothly? Like some pedal shots videos of your foot movement?. Thanks.

So you don’t need to go down through every gear when coming to an intersection?
@DriveSmartDrivingSchool

No, that is old school thinking from the days when cars had strong, solid gear boxes and relatively poor brakes. Modern cars have more delicate gear boxes and much more efficient brakes.

Hi! Great explanation! Even if i am an experienced driver I still have a problem. Let s say I m creeping at about 5km/h, still in 1st gear, clutch pressed and I want to, let s say, enter an intersection. I lift the clutch at the biting point, i give gas, but the car jerks. Not stalling, but is jerky. What am I doing wrong? Am I not giving it enough gas? Am I releasing the clutch too early? Should I first add gas and then release the clutch?
@DriveSmartDrivingSchool

Thanks for asking. If you are bringing clutch to friction point but not holding there for short time until car is moving then it will be jerky. Best process is: Give a little bit of gas, Clutch to friction point then as car starts to move bring clutch slightly up and Hold until car is moving, then you can bring clutch all the way up. Let us know if that helps.

problem i have is when im in say 3rd or 4th gear and i need to come to a stop. i struggle to shift down the gears without my car shaking or doing something crazy

Best way to come to a stop from any gear whether is 3rd, 4th, 5th or even 6th (if you have 6th) is to take foot off accelerator, apply the brake, use brake to slow to to approximately 20 kph / 12 mph then push clutch all the way down while keeping foot on brake until you stop. This should stop any shuddering or shaking. Does that help?

oh ok so you can put it in first while waiting if its a short light

Thank yiu for your comment. General rule is if you will be waiting more than 15 seconds, put in neutral and release clutch pedal. If you are confident you will be moving off shortly, put directly in first gear, hold clutch down, ready to move off again.

WHY use the hand brake when stopped? Why not just use the foot brake?
@DriveSmartDrivingSchool
2 жыл бұрын
Any time the car may roll slightly in wrong direction it is smart to use hand brake to make sure car moves in the correct direction, exactly when you want to move. Particularly when first learning this makes everything easier and less frustrating. Once more experienced, some drivers find they don't need to use the Handbrake quite so much. If the car will definately move in intended direction (perhaps at down hill intersection) then just holding on place with foot brake then moving off again with clutch can work fine. Thank you for asking.
