Bob Mintzer has made a few books on an easier level too. I really like the "14 Blues and Funk Etudes" one. The tunes in it are *really* good and fun to play, but a lot easier than the "14 Jazz & Funk" book used in the video. There is also a "15 Easy..." that is decent. The music isn't as good, but it is even easier to play. Also a "12 Medium-Easy..." book, but I haven't tried that one.

Great as always! A thing you can do is to try to refer at the waveform as RMS and not peak, as you are doing here. Peak will always look and sound different: it reacts to the strongest attack and it doesn´t always show how we kinda "feel" loudness because it reacts harder to transient (in a wind instrument, often the sound of the keys för instance, or articulation like staccato).

You didn’t discuss bleed... have you tried the DPAs on stage? I’ve always thought they sound great, but wondered if they were too hot to use without electronics or other instruments on stage also coming through.

Good point. I’ve got them a few more days so I’ll give it a run this weekend with electronics. I’m sure they will bleed somewhat but most mics do.

Michael, I felt/heard more bass in the handling noise of your AMT microphones. Their 60-100hz was quieter, but the 20-60 was audibly louder. I have a transducer setup and a subwoofer so I hear and feel bass, and there were low sonic booms on the AMT mics I did not hear on the DPA. So maybe less audible handling noise, but more infrasonic bass handling noise. You'd want to use a high pass filter for sure.

Definitely a benefit of the DPA suspending the mics. If the AMTs were suspended too, then I imagine they could be the better handling ones.
@earspasm
5 жыл бұрын
That's very possible. But with any live mic (including the AMTs), I always aggressively roll off below 60Hz to reduce rumble. For the purposes of micing a bass clarinet that doesn't pose a problem since the lowest note (low C - concert Bb) is 58Hz.
@earspasm

AMTs are suspended, probably better than the DPAs - they're totally shock-mounted.

Thank you for this review. I am interested in the stereo piano setup. Very little review for that, except one comparison to Earthworks PM40 which made the DPA sound very anemic on the low frequency base end. Do you find the low frequencies acceptable? Noting obvious differences in instrument. Thanks.

Very informative - thank you! My situation is a tad different as I play my bass in New Orleans with a couple of street bands. We rove around playing the standards and they'd love me to be amplified - so it means carrying a speaker as well as rigging up my bass with mics. I don't have a lot of coin as I'm retired, so I started off using voice amps that tour guide use with the mic wrapped around the bell and the mic pointed down. Now at least I know to point the mic up since watching this video! Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Very educational! Why did you avoid using the clip mount for the lower mic? Seems like you could've gotten the same placement without having to thread the velcro through the keys. Also, I bet one could use the velcro attachment on the upper mic by using scissors to slim down the strap?

On the bass clarinet why did you mic it so high, being that there is a bell on it why not mount it with DPA'S universal mount and mount it like a sax because of its supercardoid pattern? I would mount it around the bell under the lip with the gooseneck extension about 4-5 inches above the bell pointed directly to the center of it because where it's currently mounted it sounds weak! I hear all highs, very little mids and NO BASS on a bass clarinet!
