Gebran Tuneni, born in 1957, was one of the most prominent Lebanese journalists during the March 14 movement. He was the former editor and publisher of daily paper Al-Nahar, and he came to international prominence in March 2000 when he wrote a front-page letter to Bashar Assad, calling for the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon. His courage and belief in human rights established him as a distinguished and rebel MP; he was the first one to raise the issue of detainees in Syrian jails and to advocate for their cause. He was assassinated by a car bomb in Beirut in 2005, and his words remain to this day imprinted on the daily Lebanese newspaper’s front page.
