“There will always be animals available that you can find” well said! - this is something I learned over time as well. In the beginning, I often found myself feeling like “oh I gotta have this now!” Now I take a moment and say “ok, I don’t have the money for this now. It is gorgeous, but there WILL be more like it someday, somewhere” I also spent way more than I ever thought I would lol! Which is why I’m putting on the brakes on buying any more now - I have built up my collection and plan to just focus on my pairings now. I also need to move stuff I’m not going to use. I think the losses are part of the learning process. Newbies just don’t know what they don’t know. ❤

Black Friday killed me this year, as I got back into the hobby. LOL 😆Luckily, all of the geckos are at least in my projects, but yeah...time to pump the brakes and focus on what I have/my plans.

I would even say that it’s okay to spend as needed. No need to completely stop, but developing that patience and an eye for better stuff will help you to wait for the right animals to buy rather than splurging on an initial collection all in the span of half a year. If I had to redo it, I would slow trickle my purchases. Even now I’ll still spend but only on things I absolutely need, and that has helped me a lot to watch the spend. Easier said than done though as we all know 😅

Harry! I appreciate your brutal honesty here. I've come back to the hobby after decades away. I kept snakes in the 80s and 90s, as well as green iguanas. Now I'm back, slightly older lol, and have crested geckos. I did a ton of research during 2023 and finally have a small collection here (14 animals). I have very specific projects and have only bought geckos that will feed into those projects. I only have 2 RTB females and 1 proven female at this time. I also have 2 RTB males. The rest are from 9-27g and in my projects. I will watch them all grow up, see how they progress, etc. I'm not sure when I'll pair my males with my 3 females, but they should all work well (on paper). lol How they actually turn out, may be a different matter. It's great getting back into the hobby after so long away. Even having done all the research, and listening to how others have made mistakes, I will surely pay a newbie tax along this journey. 😅You make great points in these vlogs and I love hearing from others about their journey. Keep it up!

Thanks Greg! The newbie tax is real lol. It’s pretty hard to avoid when just stepping into the hobby.

This last year is the first time i picked up a real camera. Something that really helped me is getting out and doing some bird and nature photos.

I can relate to most of the stuff that you said. I unfortunately is having a hard time letting go of some of the geckos that I will not be using in a project. I am too attached to them now so taking my time to let go emotionally. I find it easier to sell the young ones than the adults that I grew as a juvy.

I love these vlogs!!!! All your vids and gecko pods help me out! I dont have a mentor so its like the geckopod is my mentor😂. Im always wondering if im doing the right things, and i think i am for the most part. It's hard for me to talk to ppl in the community since i still have my 9 to 5 job and can't rly join in on to many convos in the discord chat or voice chat. I have spent alot on geckos already and finding high white rtb stuff very hard imo (already have a felix julia kid male), but getting females that live up to frost line stuff has been hard for me. I should have bought more grow out stuff, but like you, im impatient!!! Anyway, thanks for the vids and keep em coming!!!!

Thanks for watching!! I’m glad we can help a little bit! We’ll keep them coming. Eventually AJ and I will have a more in depth membership platform for folks that want more 1:1. In the meantime, feel free to dm!

I'm like you, Impatient. I've recently brought some dark phantom babies and I'm like" damn its going to be another 2 years before I can pair them" I've moved on a lot of adults to fund these babies and now its a waiting game which i hate

The initial collection is tough in the sense of finding the right animals even when you don’t know what you want exactly… and then waiting all that time to grow them out just to find out you don’t want them anymore 😅😅😅
