I was smiling the whole time, watching this. In 1975, my high school art teacher taught a 6 week linocut printmaking project. We got to pick our subjects…I used that very same image of Bowie to carve an 8" x 10" plate! I'd make a bunch of prints each day and give them to friends and fellow students (even some teachers!). They were very popular. How I wish I still had that plate all these years later! Anyway, it was fun to watch your creative use of cardboard…your approach to using the gel plate and various materials is inspiring, and this project in particular brought back a lot of fun high school memories.

The corrugation is a lot of fun. I tried it on a smaller scale, rollering ink on the cardboard first, transferring image to plate before adding background layer and lifting. The combo was pop in pink and red. I am keen to do more. Your videos foster unprecious experimentation with often striking results. Thanks so much.

I've had some decent success with plain small scale cardboard stencils, but you've given me a few ideas for larger scale - although 12"x12" is my current limit for gel-plates - so I may have to adapt second stencilling and layering to achieve bigger pieces. Useful tip for anyone who doesn't have the confidence of drawing out or to save time gridding up: cut your pictures in half on photo editor, then print each half on a sheet of A4 then tape together. Hey presto, an A3 printout you can trace around, cut out, spray over, transfer to cardboard etc.

Love the practicality of all of your materials...you really can create some great prints with cheap materials. I thought maybe spraying the cardboard with a coat of Polycrylic or even painting with a light coat of gel medium might help it hold up over multiple prints.

Hi Mark, lovely prints and techniques. This reminded me very much of being in the print room and using collagraph techniques to make plates out of mount board, and peeling off different layers to create tones. The cardboard worked a treat for you, but you were thinking about how you could extend the life of the plate…. I used a wood glue that created quite a hard surface back then, painted it over the entire surface, and could then make up to fifteen prints using a press. The cardboard plates of course will only take hand pressure, but still I wondered if you could use a suitable glue to stabilise things. The difference between the one I used (I do not remember it’s name) and PVA is that it was much less wet and dried much harder. I love these kind of techniques and the end results. Just to add to your tutorial, it is not just the photos of famous people that you can do this with, of course, a photo of a family member can be given the same treatment or a friend. A quick play around in Snapseed can reduce it to what is needed. And really you could do this with a photo of anything, not just people. Just choose unfussy images…. Extender is great for Gelli work, just use it sparingly, you do not need much. They all work pretty much the same, I think I have three and they seem to be interchangeable. For anyone who needs to work slower it really helps. The size you are working at here is awesome! Had you thought of using one of the modern ‘paper’ types for stencils? I am thinking of Yupo or the stone papers, there are also some translucent ones used for various commercial applications, I used to get sample sheets from commercial paper companies for various design briefs. They cut really well even with scissors….. and do not do that wet stretchy stuff, you can even wash and reuse some of them. Thanks Mark! Now we have a use for all the cardboard we seem to get lumbered with, I love repurposing stuff anyway.

Thanks for such a thoughtful message Lindy. I get so much to think about from the comments from videos and they've often guided my future experiments so helpfully. Will look into your suggestions for stencil papers - I've had other people mention Yupo so will start with that. Again, thanks for feedback and conversation, its lovely having a little art community at my fingertips!!!! All the best, Mark : )

@@yeatesmakes Hello Mark and Lindy, wanted to tell you that both Yupo and Stone Paper do not work too well for stencils, I always make mine either of Mylar sheets, or I use the transparent foil that you can print on with your printer. You can print your design directly on the foil, saves one step. And regarding the retarder: you said you couldn’t get it in your art store- but you do know that that stuff you put your wallpaper on the wall is pretty much the same stuff? (Sorry I am german and don’t know the word) It‘s very cheap and does exactly the same, the only difference being you have to use it up in a couple of days. Cheers from Berlin, Tina

I am an absolute fan of your work, seen most of your videos and already tested a few techniques you have shown, currently creating a small scale stencil of a portrait as you did here and a ball point drawing to transfer with the gel plate. I made my own gel plate so some techniques don’t seem to work as they might wetter than the real Gelli. Anyway, having fun thanks to you, so happy to have discovered your channel, you are a star ⭐️. Thanks ever so much for your generous work! 🎉
