I like the video because it's full of great information about GEL polishes, however this video was done in 2014 .... could you do a review of the same or other GEL polishes that are now available for? I am wondering if anything has changed because it's been four years. Thank you. =)

Being new to using gel nails, this video is just priceless!!! I can't thank you enough Ten Little Canvases. It provides every single bit of information one might need to make a smart decision about the products to purchase to get started. With this info a newbie doesn't have to stumble along learning by their mistakes. And the presentation is exceptional. I rarely, if ever, comment on a youtube video lol :), but this is so helpful and so well-done. It really deserves to be acknowledged. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for doing this video! I'm glad I found your channel and am now a new subbie. I recently started doing my own gel manicures and have a few polishes from Gelish, Gelaze and ibd. I really like the ibd brand and want to purchase more as well as pick up a few if the Ink brand. The only issue is that those two brands can only be purchased online and I find it very hard to see good swatches. I'm very surprised that there aren't any swatch videos to be found for ibd and Ink. Would you be willing to do a swatch video for those of us who may be starting out and can't decide on which colors to buy? I would so appreciate if you could and I'm sure many others will too! Thanks again for taking the time to review all the brands, I found this information very helpful!

Love the video! And you were dead-on on the higher end brands (never tried the lower ones). I too purchased OPI when they first came out, since I love their lacquers and it almost turned me against gels altogether. Constant shake ups, runny formula and poor wear. But as fashion trends shifts so must we as nail techs and again I began a search for gels. I found Gelish to be just as problematic. I recently purchased LeChat's Perfect Match and I must say I'm in LOVE!!!! Application, wear and soak off is a breeze. Going into week two of a mood manicure and my mani is still intact, cuticles and free edges! As a tech and mother my nails are constantly in liquids, picking up or opening something, so I personally wanted a system I believed in for my clients and could wear myself. I found that in LeChat. Again very accurate and informative info.

Thank you for the review. Out of all those products, only CND should be used. They are more expensive for a reason which I will explain. When CND cures, it creates micro tunnels in itself, this allows for acetone to penetrate it so that it can be taken off with ease and with no damage to the nail plate.This is crucial because many times you hear a client say "oh, I think I should give me nails some time to breath and regrow, it seemed to become thinner from using gel too much". That's how you lose money. All other gel brands will swell up instead of breaking down and this causes nail techs to pry the nail with a sharp object and take chunks of the nail off. The reason CND have shrink problems and chunking of certain colors is because when you cure gels, they all shrink to some extent, using a lamp not made for CND can create a lot of problems. People tend to mix and match. The chunking of the color is because certain colors have a harder time being cured by UV light so its formulation is different.

Thank you so much!!! I just got my LED lamp and kit by UV nails and I used their products. After I was done they felt "rubbery" and I couldn't figure out why. Though they are completely dried they didn't feel "smooth" and glass like when I get them done at the salon. When you mentioned that the "ink" brand made your nails feel rubbery, I realized that it was the brand I was using. The colors of UVnails are nice but the top coat is crap. Thanks for the tip on the Kiss brand. Off to get some!

Now the gelish is a nightmare for me, I got an allergic reaction to their products after using them for about a year and have never been able to return to their line without the same problem happening again! I'm so happy I stumbled across your site. I've been curious about soak off gels for a while now. I currently do my own gel nails, but use an all in one clear gel system that doesn't soak off. I love it, but the filing for fills is cumbersome (just like acrylics). Ok my question... 😊 I want to sandwich regular nail polish in between base n clear top coat. What combination base/top coat do you recommend? Or do you mix brands?
@tenlittlecanvases
10 жыл бұрын
I mix systems all the time. I use Gelish base and Kiss Top Gel. Gelish base has a very good adherence on my nails but some people find it takes longer to soak off for them. If you want an easy 5-7 min soak off, you might try Ink or Couture bases. I like the Kiss top coat because it's super shiny and stays that way for up to 2 weeks, unfortunately Walgreens is no longer carrying the Kiss Gel Polish line so the top coat is hard to find now. A similar top is Gel II. Gelish isn't a bad top, I just don't like the thinner consistency. Ink also has a good, shiny top coat. Also, if you haven't already, check out my video on using regular nail polish with gel polish, this includes 'sandwiching'.

Thank you so much for making this video! For about a year I've been collecting RNP and doing my nails, but am just recently learning that you can do your own gel manicure without the salon. I've been researching LED lamps and gel polishes and am trying to decide on which products are best to invest in as a starter kit. Would you advise on purchasing the materials separately or is there an all-in-one kit you can recommend? At this point I'm leaning towards the former because I'm trying to save myself the expense of buying duplicates of anything. This video was very informative and just what I've been looking for. Thanks again and I can't wait for more videos and blog posts- I subscribe to each! :-)

I bought all my stuff separate because there just weren't the starter kits there are now. I would suggest getting a kit like Gelish or RCM just to see if gel is right for you. If it is, then you can branch out with different products. I ditched my Thermal Spa UV lamp for a Gelish 18G LED and I LOVE it...so much faster and 5 finger cure. You don't have use the gel makers Remover or Wraps, you can use regular acetone, cotton balls and foil, that will save you money in the long run.

you must try Perfect Summer! They are so cheap, I just love the consistency, no shrink back whatsoever, they apply like a dream! and they last beautifully for two weeks. I was in shock at the quality because of the price. I started buying inexpensive brands like elite99 etc.. one step gels to try them out. Have you tried any one step gels? it takes me an hour and ten minutes to do a Gel Manicure because I do a thorough job on the prep. that's why I'm looking into one step because I'm hoping it will take less time.

I am new to gel nails at home and I had first purchased the Sally Hansen starter kit. I had the "pitting" or "divot" effect from the top coat. I didn't notice it right away as I did a french tip so no real colour on the entire nail which made it harder to see. But when I did, I thought I must have somehow made a mistake - but it is definitely the top coat! I purchased a second bottle of it and it was the same. Thank you so much for the video - gel polish is not cheap and this will be a huge help in guiding me in the right direction for products. I am curious if you have since tried the the Gelaze polish?

Sarah McGinn Hi Sarah, I have tried Gelaze and while I am not a really a fan of the polish, I experienced horrible shrink back, I DO like their gel top coat. Some have said that freezing the polish for a few minutes helps reduce the shrink back but I've not tried that yet. The top is nice because it's slightly thicker than most tops and it won't slide off into your sidewalls and it's very shiny. It does have a slightly rubbery feel to it after curing but that doesn't affect the wear.

I used your review to buy my first products! What do you think about ASP top coat? I couldn't find my Kiss top coat so had to run to Sally's and got ASP but it ran off of my sister-in-law's thumb to the skin. I used it really lightly and didn't have that issue. It's a little rubbery.

Hi, I'm a new subscriber and found your video so in depth and informative on gel polishes. I go to a salon to get my nails done and just have a question about gels. The girl that does my nails has said to me that as long as it's a gel polish, you can cure it under a uv light or an led light. Do you agree with that? At my salon they use only a uv light and not the led lights. Thank you so much for your help... :-)
@tenlittlecanvases
10 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, all gel polish can be cured in a UV lamp but not all can cured in an LED lamp. To be cured in an LED lamp the gel has different photo initiators that allow it to cure on a narrower range of the UV wavelength. More and more gel manufactures are formulating their polishes to be LED and UV cured to keep up with the lamp technology. Most salons I've been to only use UV lamps as well, I think that's just because those lamps are much cheaper than LED. To me, LED is the better way to go, much shorter cure times, less exposure to UV rays and way more cost effective as the bulbs do not need to replaced and they last much, much longer.

Do you mix brands when doing gels - e.g Shallac base, gelish colour coat, then Kiss top coat. If so do you think its ok to mix systems, as i thought it encourages breakdown if you don't use a complete system?
@tenlittlecanvases
7 жыл бұрын
I've been using gel polish/paints for over 6 years and mixing systems during that time and never once experienced a breakdown in the coating...Of course the gel companies will tell you that using their system and theirs only will ensure a lasting manicure, they want your money, it's marketing 101... but 6 years of experience has taught me that this is just not true. That's why I do the videos, to share my experiences, successes and failures, and hopefully give enough information so people can make their own decisions on what's best for them.

@tenlittlecanvases
10 жыл бұрын
I always wipe off the sticky layer before I stamp, otherwise it won't transfer. I usually apply 2 coats of topcoat over the stamps to be be sure they are completely covered. Since the gel topcoat does not have solvents like regular polish you shouldn't have smearing issues with most polishes, although I did experience a slight bleeding with the Konad polishes. I avoided this by not over brushing and flash curing each nail.

Hi i just watched your video on the different brands and so very helpful, but i watched you due to buying 20 colours of a brand called Perfect Summer which i bought online and as soon as i used it in application it immediately started to shrink like the liquid was not covering the whole nail - ie a puddle drying in the sun. I thought i was doing something wrong but seen someone else on another video had the same problem, i was wondering if you have heard or tried this brand as it was like $40 buy 20 colours and top and base coat included - another issue was the liquid is very much like water not like a gel polish at all, as soon as you lift brush it drips off straight away - does this mean it is not a good polish???? Sorry for so many questions as im starting out and being a single mum of 3 i do not have alot of money to spend on each bottle and do like the cheap deals but want gel polish that actually works i guess. If you have any tips for a starter to look for in gel polish and i bought a 36W LED light - will that be good to use with any gel polish brand i buy or do i have get certain brands that use LED (is it a good lamp to use?) Please help i accept anything you could give me in information or point me in right direction, greatly appreciated ;)

I stay away from gel polish from China for just the reason you experienced. I got one brand, Far East, that took over 1 hour to soak off. It was a nightmare and damaged my nails. The gel should never be runny... that sounds like inferior gel and not enough pigment... I would rather pay a little extra and get a product from the US that, at the very least, has some sort of quality assurance. My advise, don't sacrifice your health or quality to save a few dollars :). A good inexpensive, quality brand is IBD Just Gel. Lots of colors, great wear, LED and UV curable (I use a Gelish 18G LED lamp and love it). Usually runs about $7-8 for .50oz. My go-to base is Gelish and I use a variety of top coats but I really like Kiss Top Gel and China Glaze top coat. You can find several brands of gel polish at Sally's, Gelish, China Glaze, Fingerpaints, and ASP. I personally don't like China Glaze's gel colors but the other brands are all pretty nice and you can usually get them for about $10-11...Gelish minis run about $14 (personally, I don't think they are worth it). All are LED curable.

Gel polish here in SA go for about R 299.00 to about R700.00 so approx price in dollars is 30 dollars up to 70 dollars (Gellyfit). Cheaper brands are planet nails and Canni which were about 6 dollars.

Thank you for this helpful review. I am new to using Gel Polish. I got the Harmony Gelish Soak Off Kit for Christmas. BAD! BAD! BAD! When I went to use this brand for the very first time, the Top Coat was DEFECTIVE. I contacted the company.....NOTHING! NO RESPONSE! This is NOT a brand that I would use; or even recommend. yes, FIRST IMPRESSION count. If a company cannot stand by their product, why??? should I use it. I'll definitely check out some of the other brands out there and look into some of the OTHER brands you mentioned.

There are, in my opinion, better brands than Gelish. I've had too many issues with formula, fading and just general inconsistencies to buy this brand anymore. I prefer LeChat and IBD. LeChat has a great formula, wears well, great coverage and beautiful colors. IBD has a good formula, wears nicely, has an extensive color line and they are priced great.

Thanks KIm. Had to laugh when I saw OPI's LPAD.. I threw mine away. And yes the formula is terrific now. I just wish they would release the early colors again with the better formula. Body chemistry and batch differences seem to also play a role. My most consistent formula is actually CND Shellac. How odd is that?
@tenlittlecanvases

Yeah, LPAD sucks :)...I may give OPI a second chance...but I will sell off that first batch I bought, completely useless to me. Shellac is a good brand, just didn't last on me as long as the other brands.

Is it ok to use one brand of a base coat and a different of a top coat? Also which lamp is safer to use, LED or UV?
@realworldnails790
9 жыл бұрын
+Ana Museva Neither LED nor UV is "unsafe" - LED lights are actually UV lights also, because they emit light that is within the UV spectrum (specifically UV-A). UV light is in the wavelength of 100-400 nanometers, LED light is in the 320-400 nm spectrum of UV light. Both are perfectly safe. schoonscientific.com/downloads/UV-Nail-Lamp-Facts.pdf As for mixing base and top coats, its not recommended because manufacturers make products to work with each other. While you may not have problems, there is the possibility that you may have problems, especially peeling, if you aren't using a full system.

Hi Kim, i have changed my top coat to the Kiss brand and i have noticed after cleansing to remove sticky layer the nails are clouding over and loosing their shine. I use non acetone to remove sticky layer. I use gelish foundation and colour. Have you seen this happen? What do you remove sticky layer with? I have tried to find MSDS on kiss gel cleanser. but had no luck! Can you help?

+Kim I would use the highest percentage of isopropyl alcohol you can find...the best is 99%, most stores will have 70% . Non acetone will sometimes have moisturizers that can be the cause of the haziness. Use the alcohol and you should be ok :).

I've read about others having the same problem....some say it's oily nail beds and if that's the case there may be no way to prevent the peeling. Have you tried buffing the nail slightly before the ph bond? That may help to get a little longer wear.

I've been addicted to gel polish for a couple years now. My absolute favorite brand is Sensationail. Where I work I have my hands in all types of chemicals which make wearing regular nail polish for more than a day absolutely impossible. But with the Sensationail I get a minimum of a 2 week wear, although i enjoy doing my nails so much i tend to do them once a week. The soak off is kinda long, but that doesn't bother me that much. The worst ones I've tried is the Sally Henson and the Gellish brand. Sally's always shrinks and will bleed into my top coat I've tried using both the led and uv lamps but have the same problem with both. Gellish sometimes wrinkles when it cures. Not with all the colors, mostly with the white and most of the creams, it also streaks and some colors cure rubbery instead of hardening. Lechat mood polishes are awesome too. When I'm super tired and don't have the time to spend making them fancy i'll use those so i'm looking all nail fancy without spending all the time. :D

Glad to hear you are enjoying the gels...I agree about the Gelish, there is such an inconsistency with their formula and colors fading that I have all but given up on them...there are just too many other brands that don't have those issues and cost less. Thanks for stopping by! :D

Have you tried madam glam? I see so many people use them and they have a million colors, but I'm always suspicious about brands that are always on sale :/ My aunt and cousin are salon professionals and swear by Shellac, but I don't like it much myself. Gelish is my favorite so far.
@tenlittlecanvases
7 жыл бұрын
I have 2 Madam Glam colors, baby pink , baby blue and both are nice if a tad sheer on the first coat. Wear is typical 2-3 weeks, soak off was easy, about 10 minutes. I like their bottles because the top has a color disk representing the color inside so no opening bottles to what color you have. It's a good brand, nothing to be suspicious of. My fave gel polish is still LeChat followed by IBD Just Gel. I don't use Gelish much anymore because their formula is not consistent, they have a lot of colors that fade so some of their pigments aren't stable and too many colors, at least the ones I have, have shrink back issues....I HATE shrink back ....so I moved on from Gelish. I still use their base, though. Shellac would chip on me after about a week so I don't use theirs anymore and I don't like the longer cure times with UV....I like my LED polishes :D.

My 1st experience I bought fingerpaints and I forgot and just started painting my nails and it did exactly what u described BUT I had forgotten to use my base coat so I took it off and did it over and once I did the base coat I didnt have that problem. Now my base coat is fingerpaints. IDK if u have ever used there base coat with it, but the difference was like night and day. I dont have any other basecoats yet to compare since my lamp came before all the gel I ordered and just went to sallys so I could use it. I thought it was because I applied it over acrylics. So maybe they have rigged it where it doesnt perform as well if u dont use the fingerpaints base coat.

Thanks a lot for so great and helpful video! May be my question will be a little bit silly. English is not my first language. I didn't understand exact what does it mean "shrink back". Can you explain just using different words? I'll really appreciate it.
@tenlittlecanvases

juliasmoleac Shrink back refers to the gel color pulling away (shrinking back) from the cuticles and/or tips before curing. This leaves an area where there is no color. Does that make more sense?

Has anyone ever tried Beau Gel base or top coat? Also their gel polish? Amazon has a great deal on it. You get like 12 colors and top and base coat for under $40.00. I love doing nails but I stick to regular polish and love stamping and nail art. I don't like how long it only lasts though so I was thinking of trying gel nails. I understand the process. I would just like to start out cheap to see if I like it. Thanks for any help you ladies can give me.

We have a range of OPI, a couple of the colours do have a tendency to pool/ looks like shrink back, before i can get them cured. others are almost 1 coat colours, like you said they tend to come from new collections, the last 2 years. What i really wanted to mention was that the worst colour I believe we have is Lincoln park after dark, the colour you were holding. It is supposed to be an almost black something though the formula I would call very close to a jelly, which anyone can tell you unless you are having a 1 in a million lucky day dark jelly colours are going to look patchy. Probably the only colour i have ever had at my disposal and never suggested to anyone. Practice makes perfect?
@tenlittlecanvases
7 жыл бұрын
I agree, some darker, jelly-like colors can be a PIA, especially LPAD...I can handle patchiness but I HATE shrink back...because I know there are other brands that perform better...LeChat has a gorgeous jelly-like deep red, Royal Red that applies flawlessly...zero shrinkage...so why fight it when others apply better.

Yes, when they just started putting out gel polish years ago and I hated their formula, one of the worst for shrink back (color pulling back from the tip and cuticle) and some colors needed 3-4 coats for opacity. Not sure if they changed their formula but I moved on to other less expensive, better formula gels.
