It's a nice revamp for someone first picking up an Ode. Cool to see the retention being improved. For anyone already with an Ode, just upgrading to the Gen 2 Burr set should put a smile on your face. Nice video, nice editing.

@@coffeenerdaaron It really has. I'm less than a year into exploring coffee. I had been eyeing the SSP Red burrs for a while, but I'd also seen the Gen 2 burrs on Fellow's website. Seeing those burrs as well as other options compared head to head has been really helpful, and I feel more comfortable in which burrs I'll upgrade to. I've seen reviews and comparisons putting the Ode against other grinders, but you're the only one I've found taking a deep dive into the burrs like this which has been very helpful.

I love the Gen 2. In all honesty, my first grinder was a Cuisinart. But, I really hated it. Don’t brew espresso (yet), so that’s not a negative for me. I’m just enjoying finding the right grind setting for the coffee. I think it’s very quiet. And, I love the fact it has barely no retention and zero static. Great video. You have a new sub!

@@coffeenerdaaron do you have a recommendation for a grind setting for medium roasts? I’ve been experimenting with 6 - 7 for mediums (Counter Culture Hologram). I recently bought some Tim Hortons Original (inexpensive to experiment with). I have some really good coffee arriving today and hopefully tomorrow. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
@coffeenerdaaron
Жыл бұрын
@@Rowan611 it’s hard to say what grind setting is best for a specific roast level cause it depends on some other factors like the density of the coffee and the brewer. However fir medium to darker roasts a little courser and a lower brew water temperature is generally better. You’ll have to just experiment, but for reference I typically brew pretty light roasted coffees and usually brew with my Orea V3, I’m in the 3-5 range most of the time.

One thing that should be mentioned is the fact that there is also an ionizer at the outlet, which is part of why the static is so much improved, also a reason any retrofitting to a gen 1 ode cant be done easily since it would require connection to the electronics.
@coffeenerdaaron
Жыл бұрын
You are correct, I didn’t mention the ionizer at the time of filming this cause I didn’t know all the info on it and I didn’t know of it was something proprietary Fellow didn’t want out in the world yet. I would have loved to have added that in so thank you for commenting about it! 😊☕️🤘

I decided to go for it. My initial test shows the this grinder is noisier than the original. I noticed the first time I used it so I decided to test it with a decibel meter. With the same burr set and the same grind setting, the Gen 2 procuced 6 more decibels over the original. 86 decibels compared to 80 for the original. Could be because it hasn't broken in? Maybe. I do love the static reduction and improved hoper!

How did you subtract the ambient noise? It is not simple arithmetic. There is a calculator with title: DECIBEL ADDITION SUBTRACTION CALCULATOR and description: "Use this calculator to remove ambient noise from measurements", at Ames.

Would it be crazy to buy the gen 2 as an upgrade from a pretty high-end hand-grinder (1zpresso K-max)? I’m a little unhappy with how many fines my handgrinder produces - i find with a lot of coffees up to 2-3g cling to the burr exit and sides of the bin, and if I knock it down and use it in my brew, I get a muddy overextracted cup.
@coffeenerdaaron
Жыл бұрын
2-3g of fines seems like a lot! I don’t have any personal experience with that grinder but I’m not seeing that level of fines with the Gen 2. Is that a consistent amount you’re getting with every coffee you grind or only certain coffees?
@nikolajhansen15

@@coffeenerdaaron it varies a lot across different bean types. The worst in this regard is very light roasted and washed beans. But i agree, it really is a lot. Some beans, for example the anaerob processed costs rica beans Im using right now really doesnt have this problem with static and fines

To be honest I’m not sure, I don’t have a moccamaster, but I would say probably start somewhere around 7 and adjust to taste. If you feel it’s too strong make it courser, if you feel it’s too weak go finer.

Do you think the gen 2 Ode makes a good grind for a moca pot?
@coffeenerdaaron
Жыл бұрын
I have to be honest I’ve only used a mocha pot one time, a long time ago! If memory serves you have to grind pretty fine, like espresso fine which the Odes are not capable of doing and are not designed for.

Жыл бұрын
@@coffeenerdaaron thxxx, a mocha pot uses a coarser grind than espresso, so perhaps it will do.
@coffeenerdaaron
Жыл бұрын
@@wiebrandasnoeijer6756 it is still on the finer end though correct? My concern would be that you might always be on the finest setting of the Ode which gives you no room to adjust any finer if you have a more soluble coffee. Only being able to go courser with the grinder might not be ideal. Just food for thought 😊

Having a c40 there is just convienience which would be a reason to get a fellow ode. A flat burr espresso grinder would be my choice around 500/600 €. As addition. Maybe a video about this kind of grinder? :) ☮️

@jano232323

Just a heads up; the new hopper CAN fit on older Odes, but just potentially not every one. We had to open the top of the grinder a bit to get the clearances right for mass production; so on older models the new hopper may not fit 100% properly. I am working on exploring this now.
