For those who don't know, "Black Betty" is a COVER SONG made famous in the 1940's by a black blues guitar player/singer Leadbelly. Ram Jam just did a "rev up version" like a lot of bands in the 60's-70's who learned to play by listening to old blues 78's and 45's.

Black Betty is taken from an old marching chant from the War of 1812. A "Black Betty" was a musket that was lacquered black. An unpainted one is a Brown Besy. Bam Balam is the sound it made when you touched off the black powder in the gun.

Two quick things: 1. the song IS longer. The video is a shortened version of the actual audio single -check that out sometime because there is a killer guitar solo in the middle! 2. Time signature - if you want to check out a song that has some crazy time signatures in it, check out Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage” - that has some bizarro ones, including what I think has been labeled either 15/8 or 19/8.

Here's a tip when listening to music from this era: if it sounds like it could be about sex, it absolutely is. The subject permeated all of rock music, to the point where even songs that never mention it at all are obviously about it. (Check out "Trampled Underfoot" by Led Zeppelin, for example. The lyrics are all about his car... but please, NOBODY was fooled by that.)
