Raymond Herrera of Fear Factory would have his shirt off, sweating his ass off doing FF beats (which he came up with!) When we saw them play with Big Gene the first time, I was blown away by how calm he was. If he'd had two other hands, he could've been knitting a sweater or something lol

I have been listening to him for almost 10 years, sometimes without even knowing it was him - SYL - Deathklok - Death - Dark Angel- I think what sticks out to me about his style are his unique foot patterns and snare fills - listen to skeksis - kzitem.info/news/bejne/jpuXr6qeb3d9iZw - and then listen to some dark angel- you'll see the foot patterns he chooses are very Hoglan

My guess is that it comes from "The making of Almost Easy" or whatever it's called where he says something like "I threw in a little double ride thing" and people somehow mistook it for being a special technique of some kind.

Gene is world class. This vid is not a good representation of his precision though. Keep in mind he recorded his drum parts for this song 25 years ago with a band that disbanded 22 years ago. Gene likely noodled his way through this entire vid being that he has no reason to spend time perfecting it.
