There was someone I talked to who was so convinced that his and my generation would be the last generation before Christ's return and used this very passage to support his stance. I'm not sure how he arrived to that conclusion, but as you have stated many times, just let the Bible speak for itself. Good job as always Jim :)

Great arguments for your point. I'm definitely seeing more of the logic of the "race/people" side of this than before. What concerns me is how many people say a generation has to be 30/40 years. Where do they get that?

What has happened is that the English word "generation" has lost the breadth and nuance it originally had when it was used in early English translations. Genea certainly can designate a people group alive at any period of time, but that is not its only meaning. Modern theologians and interpreters have limited the definition to only that one meaning. But, that meaning doesn't work when it's plugged into every occurrence of genea in the Bible.

@@SalvationByGraceOrg Thanks for the feedback as well. I preached on Mark 13:28-37 this Sunday. By no means do I want to debate you on this. But I would like to share the approach I took, which was really helped by your video. After I did all the lexical study and journal article reading I could, as well as watching your video, I looked through all the uses of "generation" terminology I could find in Scripture. I saw two basic contexts in which "generation" words occur: a) a lineage context, where the author is specifying the descendants of someone who live in a certain era. in Matthew 1 and Jude, as well as OT genealogies. In these contexts, you often read "generations", "his generation", or "the 7th generation". And b) a judgmental context, where God is typically distinguishing the righteous from the wicked, as we see especially in Deuteronomy 34, Psalm 12:7, 14:5, and Philippians 2. Phil 2 is significant because it refers to Gentiles as well as Jews. In these contexts, there is often terminology like "wicked generation" and "this generation" in a pejorative sense speaking of judgment, but occasionally, it's modified with "righteous" to make a distinction. I think this usage is very similar to when the apostle John speaks of "the world". Now, with those two primary uses in mind, if you look at all Jesus' uses of genea in the gospels, every single usage fits into the negative judgmental context. Your video was helpful for me because it's clear Jesus was using genea to refer to Israel under God's judgment, especially in the passages about Ninevites and the Queen of Sheba condemning them. I think 95% of the uses in the Bible do relate to Israel; but that one passage in Philippians 2 seems to indicate it can be re-applied to Gentiles as well, to whom Paul ministered and was rejected. If you're curious at all, the sermon I preached is at westhillchurch.org. All that to say, thank you for doing the deep dive and really laying out your view clearly. I hope I have shown the ways your view has enriched mine.

Its quite clear that this is talking about a particular race/people and not just a subsection or a Generation of 40 years as is supposed, for if it were to be just a 40 year set of people, why are they paying for the sins of the fathers?
