im a single mom and i live paycheck to paycheck, i live a very small simple life and sometimes it depresses me that I cant take vcations like most people i know...but my father tells me all the time, if you're alive and healthy you already have it all. And after covid and seeing so many people lose loved ones and lose their own life, it resonated with me more than ever. I dont have a dime of wealth to my name, but I have never felt more grateful.

I like your posting...my late dad told me they're just material things..if l died right now could l take it with me? I hv two cousins who thought having fancy cars, vacations, electronic items, how much $$ they make per year, etc...they were so uppity and most of the time, they always had to make sure they had more than l did...when l got my 1st car ever at 30, instead of one cousin being happy for me, she asked me 3 times and thought l was lying that the car belonged to me...l was splitting it with my sister...can you imagine. Well fast fwd, one cousin's companion of 26 yrs has stage 3 colon cancer, and the other cousin's husband has MS so bad he's walking with a cane....does material things really make a person better....both of them to me were stuck up snobs

Geneen has done "the work" as we say, for decades. Psychologically and emotionally, she has been healing herself, so I am not surprised that when the storms came, her foundation remained strong. A wonderful testament to inner strength and working through pain when younger because as we age, we will have moments of crisis ike this. I respect her immensely.
@chubbatheBOSS

Absolutely. A regular unconscious person could not have handled a crisis like this in such a conscious way. Many people in this situation losing their life savings without a spiritual foundation would commit suicide. She is such a beautiful example of someone who has done the work and was able to weather the storm and not only that but come out of it stronger and happier than ever. She has a very solid foundation and I just love that. It gives me such courage and inspiration to see that the foundation when it is built, truly comes in handy when the storm hits.

@Bruno1600 So true. But it's so common, it's crazy. One of my cousins, her husband was an insurance broker and started playing the market day trading. Never holding a stock long, buy, sell quickly. He was doing pretty well at it for a few years and so friends invested with him, and his in-laws, my aunt and uncle invested EVERYTHING with him. And the day came he effed up somehow and lost it all. All his money, all his friends money, all his in-laws money. They had all given him everything they had. 0_o

The thing with Madoffs fraud was that he would send you a false list of company stocks that you "own", so as to give a false sense of risk spreading.
@scottbrandon9390
3 жыл бұрын
It wasn't as simple as that. Madoff's company was a hedge fund, so they invested money in a number of stocks just like you went on your own to a broker. Problem was he was not investing, just taking client money. Ponzi schemes are as old since the 1920s. There were some very sophisticated investors with Madoff, including the Loreal makeup family, Wall Street lawyers, investment bankers, and many members of the "1%". Many hedge fund managers fell for the scam, even when warned by journalists. Bloomberg News did a good story on Madoff back in 2004, and in 2005 an economist warned Washington, the NYSE, and the SEC that something was wrong with Madoff. No one listened.

I've been through some very difficult times, times that while going through it I thought, I can't do this, I can't get through this, I can't survive this. And I got through it,I survived. This is my 60th year and thankfully I've reached the stage of looking back and realizing that all the bad times I've been through, all the losses, all the grief, everything that I felt I couldn't survive, I survived and I'm stronger because of it. I've come to look at the difficulties in my life as actually being a blessing. They're a blessing because they've made me stronger, they've deepened my faith, they've drawn me deeper into my prayer life, they've made me realize that I can and will get through anything. So in my mind, anything that does that, even if it's the worst that can happen to you cause you to turn to your faith, cause you to pray, gives you strength is a blessing from God. Difficulties ARE a blessing!

The extremely wealthy have a basic checklist they follow: Their Manhattan suite overlooking Central Park is usually in a numbre company, so it "doesn't count" when they "lost everything". That also includes the cars, art, and the Chateau in France. It's actually a sound financial move to separate your assets, and therefore protect them. But no, she didn't "lose everything", just the cash.

It's kind of interesting to see Oprah talking to someone about this happening now. I remember years ago, Oprah did a show where she read letters that kids sent her. One of them asked what would happen if she were to wake up tomorrow and lose everything - her career, money, everything! She didn't react very well to that letter. She just thought it was a stupid question and reacted accordingly.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, I think she actually mocked the kid and called the letter stupid. I think she said something to the effect of "oh, here's a stupid one." She kind of laughed and said in a condescending tone, "I'd be like what? what happened?" But it's possible that I don't remember correctly because it was so many years ago. I think it was during the time she was in Texas for the beef trial.

I did lose a great deal of money, due to my brother running up a credit card I backed for him, which was one of the many things I did to help him over many years. I shopuld have checked, instead of trusting him. After the shock -and paying off the debt, two people separately took me aside and said the following: " If anybody could withstand this tragedy, it is YOU. No children. Think about what you still have ?" Well, I still had my health, car (paid cash), co-op apartment (paid off), closet full of great clothing, bank accounts, deferred compensation, savings bonds, upcoming pension, etc. Nothing had changed EXCEPT the loss of money already paid off. From that point on, I was OK. As for my now deceased brother, that is another and tragic story.

Toni Braxton said that Oprah was "Mean" to her when she interviewed her on her show. This was a Woman who had a fortune of 50 Million and lost everything. What's so eerie was that her Signature Song "Unbreak My Heart" written by Dianne Warren & Produced by David Foster two legends and Multimillionaires in their own right and she has nothing. On LaFace Records, so many Artists had problems. TLC declared Bankrutpcy as well. Sadly enough Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins also lost her Home as well as her Clothing Business.

He was showing regular returns that always beat the market even in moments of downturn. With lridiculous returns up 50 ‰ he promised to some investors people thought it was too good to turn down. A lot of people I know got interest free mortgages and then used the money in investments that they re now using to pay off mortgage and thry also have a retirement. Many of Madoff's victims were seniors or close to retirement. It takes about 30 years to have enough for retirement. So if you lose money with Madoff at age 30, you can pick up the pieces and start over. But if you lost it all at 60 or worse at 80, you're finished. Time is against when you need to cash in investments the most.
