I have a 16kw natural gas air-cooled Generac i purchased in 2006. During hurricane Ike, we lost power and it kept my entire home including both my upstairs & downstairs air-conditioners running for 3 days. I use Royal Purple oil to protect my investment. We've had other outages over the years due to transformers down, vehicles hitting poles etc. and never had any issues other than having to change out the battery every few years. I love it and the peace of mind it provides my family of always having power as long as the underground gas is flowing!

We have a 22kw Generac also and had it running 40 hours this week due to a power outage. Luckily I received an email from an installer (not ours) that said you should shut down the generator every 24hrs let it cool for an hour then check the oil. We did and found that the oil level was down 1/2 quart. We had a long funnel and put a half quart 5W30 synthetic in. You need a long funnel because there is a bar blocking the oil fill. Buying 3 quarts of oil and keeping funnel with oil in convenient place.

Dan, this is great thank you. Just went through this hell in Houston. I would like to get one like you have but do not believe any way to do propane in city and stuck with the natural gas I suppose. I was also trying to pay attention to how quiet or loud it would be. Mot sure how much this unit ran you but I am sure well worth the investment. My issue is in between the houses is kind of tight, I would imagine they need to try to work the install as close to the breaker-box and gas main as possible. Honda is nice but Generac is just incredible man!!

They trey to put it close to the electric and gas but can put it anywhere. If you don’t have an ordinance again propane tanks or propane I’d get it set up for propane. It does both at a flip of a switch but I thought they we saying they were having natural gas flow problems also? It’s not very loud, it sounds louder on the phone mic for some reason. It has to be at least 18” from the structure (house wall) and no less than 5’ from the property line. I would suspect after this event you will see a massive wave of generators being installed and I would think most municipalities will change some ordinances to comply.

@@dan8220 Yes. Might have to go in backyard as too narrow for the rules you mentioned. I have not heard about gas-flow issues. I am guessing regular gas would be pretty high if used. Have to check on compliance for the propane, I usually see that in the country. I wonder how much I would be looking at, I am sure a lot. Yes, I agree with you people wont sit around while people die and b.s. with boards, grids, and politicians that lie and say were are prepared and we were not. @@Mikeski1969 I took a look at kohler and Cummings, they were more as well expensive but the reason I went with generac was because of the availability of parts. Dealers were hit and miss around my area for the other brands and because generac holds probably around 2/3 of the market for generators they have more technicians ready available. I’m in a City just outside in the suburbs and there are no restrictions on propane tanks from the city as long as the set up follows NFPA 58. Some areas will not have enough space to allow a tank of the yards are too small. If you are able get propane, BUY YOUR OWN TANK, do not rent a tank from supplier. I paid $1500 for my tank, $250 for set up and $459 for 400 gallons of fuel. Propane last forever, so no worries on bad fuel speaking for diesel generators. Also with propane you get the full kw out of the unit, if you run on natural gas you only get 19.5 kw out of a 22 kw I believe. I don’t have natural gas in my area but if I did I would still use propane because If the gas flow is interpreted you have a paper weight not a generator. In owning your own tank any propane tank company can fill it if you run low in an emergency, if you rent from a company your at their mercury and pricing for fuel cost and if they can be available when you need fuel, especially in a hurricane, tornado aftermath, flood or wind, snow storm.

I live in South Louisiana and I just had a 22kw installed. A few things to note. 1) Generac's sizing is not accurate. Whatever size it says you need will not be large enough. I had 2 installers give me quotes, and using their sizing system provided by Generac, they determined that I needed the 22 even though the calculation that I did on Generac's site said I needed 16. Not much difference in pricing, but just be aware. 2) They say that you can estimate adding $2k for a "typical" installation. My installation, as described by my installer, was as simple as it gets. Minimum distance to the gas meter, no trenching and the electrical panel was right behind in the garage. However, by the time you add the cost of the battery which is not included, freight, tax and permits to the additional cost, the total costs over and above the base cost of the generator was almost $4. I'm still very glad I made the decision.
@dan8220
3 жыл бұрын
I see what your saying for sure! The install cost varies at every location based on what is needed and distance etc. Now for the sizing, you want a bigger unit than what’s called for, for a couple reasons, surge capacity, load on the generator, and fuel use. 1. If you have an outage and running 15kw, on a 16kw unit, that’s almost at capacity so it’s going to use a lot more fuel. 2. If you have the same and need a large motor to start something like a heat pump or some refrigerators have a pretty good hit what starting, it can dip the generator Down a bit too much and possibly cause your motorized items to go out faster over time. 3. My local code requires a certain amount of over capacity on a generator and/or lock out modules. So sometimes the technician sees 16kw. It has to factor surge and city compliance guidelines and up the size. 4. The 22 is the most sold generator on the market and by generac, so hopefully that means parts are widely available and in stock everywhere, So in the event of a breakdown your not waiting for a part on a unit not sold as much. I think the 22 is a minimum for whole house coverage. The first time you have an outage for several hours and your still at 72 inside your house when the blacktop is melting outside, then it will pay for itself after that one outage. 😂😄

I wish Generac would come out with a home WiFi interface so you could monitor your generator VIA the Computer or your smart phone. They do have a system which connects to cellular service. That may be good in a remote service area, but face it, that's just another expenditure we can live without. We all have wireless routers and WiFi that would extend to our back yards. I have e-mailed Generac and told their customer service about that but all they tell me is their "Mobile Link". I wish everyone would get in touch with Generac and push this feature and tell them to develop a WiFi connected system.

It has been cold here more than any other time that I can remember. Mine starts every Wednesday, for the exercise. I will probably change that to monthly due to the white milky substance that builds up from condensation on such short run time. Can’t believe generac doesn’t listen to their dealers on that whole topic. Other than that, still a happy customer so far.

+ Sandra Hernandez Im considering geo thermal strictly because of the cost of electric. I don't have any concerns of the generator overloading, upon testing, it only reached 18,000 watts. The old generator I had installed with the exhaust pointed toward the heat pump and it was plenty far away to have any effect on the head pressure. I think the Carrier Infinity heat pump is the only type of heat pump that seems to require some additional touch ups before it works well with generators. Generac has some pretty good software to properly size generators for the home. I have great confidence in the company that installed my unit, if something was not going to turn out healthy, Im certain they would have mentioned that.

Today finally came when Wired Electric came out and installed a new engine into our 20KW Whole House Generator. The old engine had low compression on one cylinder. The generator was 2 years out of warranty. After calling Generac and sending them the serviceman's diagnose of the engine they deemed it "Manufacture Defect". The original warranty was 5 years. I had the generator 7 years. The new Generac Generators now carry a 7 year warranty. I got a call from Generac telling me they were going to cover the cost of a new generator. The serviceman worked on it from 11:30 to 3:45. He put oil in it and fired it up. It ran great. I ask him how long have he seen these generators run without stopping. He told me over 3 weeks when the power came back on. At that time you change the oil and filter and put it back in standby mode.

Dan, I watched all of your Videos, and they Are Terrific. I think the only thing that you could add to the Transfer switch video is info on the number of wires needed between them which for the Briggs 20KW is 4/3 with Ground, 12/2 with ground, and 18/5 Gauge sprinkler wire for the communications between them. Briggs Told me that a Heater Kit is basically Mandatory because it keeps the Oil Liquid in cold Temps, thereby preserving the Starter that has to push the engine with Congealed oil and will break down prematurely.
@dan8220
8 жыл бұрын
+silverbankruptcy Thank you for taking a look. I defiantly agree on the transfer switch information but it seems to vary. I have seen a couple generators installs fail inspection because the “low voltage” wires and the main wires were not run in separate conduits. Mine are in the same conduit but it is only a specific type of wire that is allowed if you run all the wires in the same conduit. I believe this is because there is a possibility of interference with the high voltage causing the low voltage to energize or over energize themselves if ran in the same conduit. I think I seen that somewhere in the NEC also, when I was doing a little more in depth research. I can recall the installer leaving a paper that had the wire sizes and type of wire along with the load calculations for the inspector, in case he arrived when they were not here. As luck would have it, the installer was back when the inspector arrived. The cold weather kit, I don’t think I mentioned it in the video either, but found out after the install that Generac seems to have had some issues with the KIT. It comes with an oil filter cover or cone that heats the oil filter and a battery pad that goes under the battery to keep the battery warm. That battery pad warmer is somewhat of a touchy topic. Some have had nightmare stories and some have had good things to say about it. Seems that after a while, couple years or so, that the vibration from the generator running and the battery sitting on that pad, cause the pad to short out and blow the N1 or N2 fuse in the transfer switch, which also causes the generator to think main power has been lost and it starts itself and transfers to generator power because it can’t see regular line voltage because the cold weather kit blew that fuse. If you’re out of town or away from home for a while, the generator will run until you manually turn it off because it can’t see the line voltage, if you aren’t there to turn it off, you either run out of propane, or run the generator for days or even weeks without checking the oil level. Yes it has a low oil shutoff but no guarantee that will work. Not to mention an outrageous gas bill for natural gas if that were to happen. The only other defense would be to go with the mobile link so you get an e-mail or text message if your generator starts and that may trigger you to monitor the generator from away and have someone like the installer go turn it off, if no main outage is actually happening. Generac has the cold weather kit and the mobile link as an option; they do not come with the generator. The downside is that the cold weather kit is required in areas where the temperature regularly drops below freezing but some dealers mention it to you and others don’t so it’s your luck of the draw on the quality of the installer you choose. Should your generator fail and or damage itself trying to start up in freezing temperatures, Generac will not cover the repair if you didn’t have the cold weather kit. Generac wants to the leader in stand by generators but defiantly needs to up their game on customer relations. This is my 2nd stand by unit and to date I have had flawless operations out of them, but it’s a bit hard to swallow to see all the customers that are upset or disappointed by Generac’s lack of service to the customer. KZitem is a very good place to educate oneself on such issues. I found your Briggs and Stratton on the 20 you had and that helped me a lot on learning about the standby units, very good information. Also triggered me to look for more information and further educate myself as much as possible.

If I can be objective here... the electrical conduit is a bit sloppy. I'm also a Generac dealer, installer. and licensed electrician. For the majority of my installations we install rigid pvc conduit and transition to flexible conduit to properly absorb the vibrations from the generator. We also prefer to install 2 layers of 6x6 treated lumber (with the chipped white marble like you have). The elevation helps with snow accumulation to keep those air vents clean and the generator performing like it should.
@dan8220
9 жыл бұрын
+electricalron I agreea with you on the conduit, my intention is to re build the deck and add a step down deck to the pool in the future. Rigid PVC is a good idea! I will more than likely bury the condult, but didn't want to bury yet, with my luck i'd end up havnig a couple post for the new deck that need to go right where i'd bury the condult, so I'll wait for my final place so I know where to bury it. I think the built up is also a good idea to keep the snow from getting sucked in. I hope having placed the unit where I did, the deck will help keep the snow from building up on the intake side.

I bought a Generac generator almost a year ago now, one of the things I didn’t realize is there be extra costs involved after you installed the generator that no one told us about till after the generator was installed and up and running. 6 months after the initial install we were informed we had to do a 6 month check up on the generator that cost us another couple hundred bucks that we weren’t expecting to have to pay! After that there’s a yearly check up that has to be done in order to keep your warranty in good standing so if there’s ever a problem with the generator hopefully the warranty will cover whatever problem comes up! Basically it’s like your furnace that should have check ups least every couple years! Especially if it’s got a warranty on it? Other than that I like the Generac generator, although it is a little on the noisy side! I can hear it running from inside the house too, being it’s installed outside in the back of my house . I’d recommend if you can afford to pay the extra cost to put your generator farther away from your house be a great idea to hopefully not hear the generator running from your bedrooms at night when your trying to sleep! I‘ thinking about trying to build a sound proof box around the generator as much as possible to least try to deflect the noise away from my house. Hopefully it will help?
@dan8220
3 жыл бұрын
I do not recommend an enclosure at all. Generac does not support them and that alone can void your warranty. I sleep with box fans on high so I don’t hardly hear it running. One thing I did install on my heat pump was a soft start kit so it don’t kick down every time the air conditioner came on. As far as maintenance it’s all a gimmick, the only service required is oil change, plugs, battery and filter. After a few hours maybe have the valves tested for possible adjustments. Other then that in my opinion you don’t need added maintenance cost from a dealer. If it breaks down generac will honor warranty unless you have shown absolute disregard for any kind of service. You complete the service by doing it and then clearing the message on the display. I change oil every year, plugs and filter every 2 and battery every 4.

@@dan8220 That’s good to know, I will definitely look into that closer now! The company that installed the generator called us at 6 month saying it was required for the warranty and then every year after that to keep the warranty up to date! Believe me if I had known that before buying it I probably wouldn’t have be bought the generator! If I find out your right and I don’t have to have them service it. That company going to get a ear full from me! I do have a 10 year warranty on the generator though, which was part of the reason I bought it when I did getting that free 10 year warranty! Or least I hope it will be under warranty for that long if I ever need to use the warranty? I’ve seen way too many warranties over the years, especially those so called lifetime warranties that when people have their products fail and try to use their warranty and they refuse to honor it. First time I ever seen a lifetime warranty not worth the paper it was written on was when I use to install woodstoves and there was a woodstove called Garrison that was made all from bent steel except for 4 small seams in the front of the stove on each side top and bottom of where the door opening was. The company sold a ton of those woodstoves that all failed at those wields. Company flat refused to honor their warranties to their customers. Talk about some pissed off customers and who could blame them? People got together and filed a law suit and when that happened the company filed bankruptcy and all the customers got the shaft so to speak! Seen it happened with other warranties too, so I take a warranty with a grain of salt not really keeping my hopes up the warranty will really be honored if and when I need to use it! Too many times those warranties are about as good as a fake 3 dollar bill! Anyway thanks for the advice, it’s appreciated

@@dan8220 Thanks again, I will certainly check out the forum! Our first time ever having a whole home generator so I’m sure there’s plenty I can and need to learn! Green light shinning bright on the end of the generator so far! Hopefully it won’t change colors too often causing me issues anytime soon? More I can learn to do myself the better far as I’m concerned. I’m a woodworker/contractor by trade or least I was till my health took a turn for the worse and I had to retire and go on disability. But for the most part there’s not much I can’t do myself with maintaining a home or remodeling or repairing things. So naturally I hate having to have to rely on others to do anything around my home. Things like my furnace blower went out not long ago and that I pulled out myself and took the motor to a company that I’ve dealt with in the past that either will rebuild or sell you a new motor. They didn’t have my exact motor, but had another motor with all the same specs. Just had to wire it to match my furnace which they did at no extra cost where the new motor was wired to be plug and play and now furnace works great again. More you can do yourself certainly can save you a lot of money! That and when someone else works on your equipment, you never know who’s honest and who’s not ripping you off? I wish I was more of a mechanic with more knowledge. Basic tune ups, etc. I can do usually do. Major stuff sometimes another story? LOL but hopefully with time I’ll learn this generator inside and out and eventually not have to depend on others too much? So hard these days to find help that’s honest and trustworthy! You probably know how that goes too I’m sure! My friends have troubles they always call me for help. But when I have troubles I’m usually on my own since they don’t know much! Think I need to find some smarter friends one of these days! LOL

You need to install a natural gas/propane furnace with straight cooling. In the winter you won't have to worry about your heater overloading your generator and reducing you run time. Never use a heat pump with a low SEER or EER as you have now. Good thing you turned the generator cause if you where running your gen during the summer with a/c it would cause your head pressure and temperature to go up on your condenser. You probably should not use PVC or CPVC pipe for the propane. The pipe could be damaged and cause a gas leak. If the regulator fails or pressure adjusted too high, the pipe will burst. Also, the pipe is not properly supported. A suggestion is that you check with a licensed plumber to follow local building codes.

Yea, it’s code required to be vented away 5’ from a source of ignition. The regulators will “breath” and in that process sometime let a gas burp out of the vent and they want that far enough away it doesn’t get sucked into the generator.

Moisture in the crankcase means the crankcase breather is probably exposed to open air OR there is a leak somewhere in the crankcase OR a seal or gasket is leaking..
@dan8220
6 жыл бұрын
You Tube That would be incorrect. It is a known and common problem. Not running at a high enough temperature for long enough to burn off moister will cause condensation in any engine. These only run 5 minutes a week and that added up to a lot of water in the oil crank case. There are no leaks in the engine, and air flow is not causing the problem. Generac has had a lot of feedback about it but chooses to not change the the exercise time to 14-20 minutes. Like my 14 used to do.
@ACommenterOnYouTube

well i disagree with you.. Water or moisture in the crankcase is due to atmosphere (air) getting into the crankcase... That engine is no different than the engine in your car. If that crankcase is sealed, then there is NO atmosphere or AIR getting into it to cause water to get in there... When you pull the dipstick on your engine in your car, do you see milk..?? NO you dont unless you have a blown head gasket or your crankcase ventilation is open to air or you have a seal or gasket that has been compromised and now air is getting in... and that air has moisture in it which is where you water is coming from... NO water should in that crankcase at all ...

You Tube I don’t disagree that can be a reason, but it is not in this case. You should take a look at Ziller Electric‘s website and look up the forum. They are smarter than Generac when it comes to these generatorsl. Yes, I bought a brand new f150 a few years back. 2013, drove it for 3 weeks normally to work and back, less than 5 minutes. I absolutely do have white milky substance in my crankcase, caused from too many short trips not allowing the engine to get to proper operating temperature,, for long enough again to burn off condensation. Check out www.yourmechanic.com took truck to dealership they pressure checked the crankcase, and coolant system, no leaks. That’s when it was explained to me how you get moister in your engine, seen the same thing in my generator so I went to Ziller and found all the information and everyone raving about it. Hodgy, an engineering marvel as far as I’m concerned built up a system to help prevent it, can’t change the run time but but can fake it out to make it think there is an outage and it turn on and run. Most just change it to run once a month and do a manual so will run 30 minutes or so.

I own 4 vehicles and 2 motorcycles & NONE have any milky oil ... i have a 98, 2012, 2014 & 2015 vehicles .. I do all the maintenance & oil changes on all my vehicles, i check the oil level on them periodically because they are all turbo charged vehicles.. And NONE have any milky substance .. The oil is either light brown, dark brown or black... ZERO indication of any moisture in the crankcase, and matter of fact on my 98 and my 14 i drop the oil pan every 3 oil changes to get rid of ALL the used oil so that the bottom end gets 100% fresh clean oil ... So, im not sure why you have a milky white substance in your dip stick .. because to any mechanic... when you see milky white substance, its an indication of of a blown head gasket or water or moisture getting into the crank case... If you don't have a head gasket leak and your PCV valve is working and you have NO leaks of any kind on that engine and no "air" is getting into the crankcase, then the milky white substance is not water, it must be the un-burnt fuel vapors getting past the piston rings from the combustion process due to blow-by ... which probably looks like water... but is not, but if you smell it, it should smell like fuel... Then at that time i would believe that can happen because the piston rings and the piston walls are not getting HOT enough to do a better seal so thats when the fuel & air vapors get past and get into the crank case... Which would only happen if you don't allow the engine to run long enough to create that better seal which i don't have that issue :-) which is why i don't see that milky white substance... Thats the only other thing i can come up with...

Nope,your wrong,we have 2 - 22 kw units at our hotel and 1 16 kw at our house and ALL 3 had the milky deposit on the dipstick and the underside of the oil fill cap ,it comes as Dan said from the short run cycle while exercising for ONLY 5 minutes AND is no different than short tripping you car in cold weather,try running you car 5 minutes a day when it's below 0 and see what happens ,the dam engineers at Generac should know better,what we do with all 3 unites we have is run them a 1/2 hour once a month and get the oil HOT enough to cook the condensation out of it, I understand now there is a software up grade to do just that,"it's about time",also the cubical minds that wrote the program have the hours reading from the date of the install when all we need is the engine run time hours ,ours show over 18,000 hours but with a few key strokes on the panel we can see we have under 12 actual hours of engine run tine , Generac,who the hell cares how many hours a unit has been installed for with the engine OFF, If they worked for me I'd fire who ever wrote that program being as he / she is clueless.

christschool I have a part 2 Video for this install also. I think it shows the gas regulators. 2 psi is about 56 inches of water column. Plenty enough. For natural gas you need 3.5 to 7 inch water column and propane which I have is around 10-12 inch water column. You should go with 2 regulators. I don’t care what anyone else tells you go with 2 regulators. The car added a link that shows the gas requirements for distance and pipe size. Load calculations are pretty simple, look at your panel, 200 amps can usually have a 22kw and as many overload modules as need for management of the big appliances, if you had heat, gas hot water, gas cooking you can less than 22 kw unless you have 2 air units then I’d go with a 22kw. Generac has a nice tablet app that they are supposed to use to do calculations. Lastly I’d go with a generac installer not just any electrician. I made that mistake the with my first generator install which was a 14kw. www.powerequipmentdirect.com/manuals/Generac%20HSB%20Fuel%20Pipe%20Sizing%20-%202014%20Models.pdf

I am a Generac factory technician. That generator is not installed to factory specs. You do not have the proper clearances on the right hand side of the unit. The piping is too close. The gas regulator is also too close. Generac recommends 10ft so the internal and external regulators don't fight and cause surging under heavy load. The seal tite conduit is also not installed to NEC code. Read the installation guide lines and see the NFPA37 diagram for proper clearances.
@dan8220
7 жыл бұрын
Not sure what type of technician you are for Generac, but the NFPA37 your referring to is for Standard Installation and Use of Stationary Combustion Engines and Gas Turbines, I believe. NFPA 58 clearly states, for gas regulators a 5 Ft minimum from relief valve in any direction away from any exterior source of ignition, openings into direct-vent appliances, or mechanical ventilation air intake, You may Refer to 6.3.7. of the NFPA 58. There is no code for how far the actual regulator can be from the generator itself as long as it is vented correctly. In addition the only 2 things that may be wrong, is the gas valve I used and the type of vent pipe off the regulator. The corrections for the gas regulator vent pipe should be to have used a UL 651 schedule 40 ridged PVC conduit, which is a electrical grade gray pipe. This is so the UV from the sun will not cause the pipe to crack or breakdown over time and potentially have a leak of the venting system. I'm not worried that about happening. For the gas valve, I used non full flow by choice, Generac suggest a full flow valve. Per the factory specs you speak of the right hand side or the intake side is perfectly fine where it is. Generac suggest and 36" clearance on the right "intake" side which I far exceed by over 8 feet from the back of the house. The deck is considered a structure and the rear side is within the 18" Generac recommends and the right side is within the compliance recommendations. No part of the generator is under the deck so the clearance from the wall of the house is adequate. For the distance from the internal regulator and the 2nd stage Generac states on page 25 of the install manual that the distance is "BEST PRACTICE SPECIFIED BY THE REGULATOR MANUFACTURER" I could not find any specific distance from Generac. I have spoke to several installers and they recommend a minimum of 6 feet f piping from the 2nd stage regulator to the generator to allow some fuel to build up to prevent dogging when heavy loads hit the generator. Maybe Generac updated their specs, but when this unit was installed, there are only the 2 items I mentioned that are not 100% to the code, and have no safety or operating problem according to my set up. Read the NFPA58 and the install manual for this module generator. Generac states that it only recommendations and never supersedes the code. Only the local enforcement can determine that.
@SchwanRutoza
7 жыл бұрын
Dan The issue I was referring to is the gas lines passing by the right-hand side of the generator. If you look in your installation guidelines booklet that came with the generator you will find a diagram showing clearances around the unit. You should have had 32 inches of clearance unobstructed from the right-hand side of that unit. Underneath the diagram in the booklet will be a caption that states NFPA 37. NFPA 37 is mostly for gas turbine engines but also has a small section for gaseous engines like the generator. The NFPA 37 section of combustion engine generators is based off of the two hour fire rating of the enclosure. If that unit ever needed a warranty repair the gas lines may be an issue disassembling the enclosure. More than likely they will never be an issue.
@dan8220
7 жыл бұрын
I see what your saying, however the NFPA37 is speaking of 36" clearance not 32" and its speaking for structure within that distance, such as a wall, shrubs or vegetation over 12" high, no mention of a gas line being a structure. If that were the case they would not allow the gas line the rear of the units to be within the 18" suggested clearance which makes no sense if that were the case. If the NFPA37 said that then most gas furnaces in ones homes would be hooked up incorrectly, because the gas line runs right down the side of probably 80% of the furnaces in the homes today, then you go on to include gas inserts fire places, etc., so to state that the NFPA37 has such a clause, I'd like to read up on the section that covers that. Most of the installers would be surprised to see that as a "Code" issue, but we learn things everyday as well. Have to remember that some local code enforcement use older code and some are more current, this was installed to the 2008 NEC and NFPA58. Now they are using 2012 edition.

@@dan8220… as a long time Generac tech, I can say that gas pipe near the unit is always in the way of major repairs. The easy fix is the factory supplied flex doubles as an disconnect, and if you add a union at another point after the regulator then it's a snap to remove for repairs, as long as the local shutoff valve is located BEFORE the second stage regulator. BTW, you can shorten up that run after the regulator by upsizing the pipe and using reducing couplers. IOW, 3 ft of 1" pipe will give you the same buffer as 6 ft worth of 3/4" pipe.

Gasoline is going to way too for the same run time. There is diesel also but that would make problems from not using it. Propane and natural gas never go bad. The usage is very minimal. I could run over 2 weeks at my usage rate of an average of 6kw. Because I own my tank I can get a delivery of propane from anyone and within a 3 day window.
@rupe53

Mark A. Vestal... Fuel consumption will be similar on all units of similar capacity, power wise. The only way to use less fuel is to go diesel, but that adds another 50% or more to the unit price, and then you have other issues associated with diesel itself. (hard start cold, fuel going bad, noise, etc) For residential use during an extended power failure (days or weeks intermittent use) there is no other choice that makes financial sense over the typical 20 year life span of most consumer grade units. The savings in diesel fuel cost doesn't come into play unless you are talking several hundred hours of use per year.

Hey CV.- I have a 3/8 copper coated line buried underground from the tank's 1st stage regulator to the second stage regulator, then from the second stage right beside the generator on into the generator is all 3/4" black pipe. I would not tap off an existing line. I would tee at the tank's first stage regulator and then run a dedicated line to the generator. BTU output is critical, add up the BTUs that your generator will need, mine is 317,000, and I only have propane for the generator, no other appliances run off the propane tank. My tank is 500 gallons, At zero degrees my output is around 300,000 BTU's at 80% full on the tank. Generator has started up in an outage at 5 below with no problem. That is what the specs are. Now I'm sure Generac is well within the min need to start a generator that they list at 317,000 to avoid any headache/lawsuits. Now in the summertime at 80 to 90 degrees my BTU output is more like 850,000 BTU's. The colder the temp the lower BTU. I like to plan on a perfect storm type of situation. If I had a 80,000 BTU propane furnance and hot water tank at another 80,000 - 120,000 BTU, I don't believe I would enough BTU to operate them all simultaneously. For you, depending on your location at 80 degrees you have BTU's around a million to 1.2 million. At zero degrees on a 1,000 gallon tank you have around 540,000 BTU's. You have to calculate your perfect storm and determine if you have enough BTU's to run everything. Stand by generators takes soo much BTU's that in most cases, not all but most, even Natural Gas users have to get their gas meter upgraded from their local gas company to be able to operate the gas appliances, and the Generator. When you Tee off the line in your house in the ceiling, your already taking 40% - 50% away from that lines capability to operate anything after that tee you put in when the generator is running. If you have a dedicated line split or teed at the tank then you have an entire run of high pressure gas line to the generator and the other appliances. Also you have to remember that with the drop in temperature there is also a drop in PSI on the system as well. If you are running 2 or 3 items off 1 line, is the PSI also going to be enough to run them all simultaneously? It can be done, but is you existing big enough to support that. You don't want to find out when it hits the fan, you want to do all your research beforehand and ensure your getting the set up that will work correctly and not just work. I'm wondering if you have gas appliances why do you need the 22Kw? If your heat is gas, and your hot water tank is gas, you'd be able get by with probably 15 - 18 KW. Unless you have a more massive electrical need over 200 amps.

Thank you very much for your response back. Very helpful. I think it may be easier and just more appropriate at this point that I install a separate smaller propane tank next to the generator to keep it separate from the house load, for I have 2 gas fired furnaces, a gas stove, a gas hot water heater, and a gas dryer. With regards to the size of the generator, I have 2 refrigerators, a stand alone freezer, 2 central air systems, a well pump, sump pump, and the usual circuitry for a 5,000 square foot house. Thanks again.

I'd go with a 27 kw liquid cooled unit if you want to run your entire house. Lock outs are can be installed on a smaller unit like the 22, but with the amount of power you have you would have to decide on either all or half your house. A 22 would get very far on your set up, lol. Also you defiantly need a delegate gas tank to supply the generator itself.

If you have close neighbors and say anything about it just tell them it meets city code and ask them to throw you a big extension cord to run their refrigerator and a couple of fans off one of the side outlets.. That will make the noise go away !

Thanks for the video, I'm in the market to buy this 22kw now and also get a 500 gallon propane tank. But, costs here in FL are ridiculous. I'm getting quotes at 4k+ for the transfer switch/generator install. Is the install really that detailed? I'm not able to justify this cost, if so, they better be at my house working on this for 24hrs straight, in the heat lol

MrJeremypkpl That sounds about right for install, even better if it is to include the gas hook up and piping, but not out of question by any means. Yes it is very in-depth process. Permits are required and a good installer is key to slot less problem through its usage. I hear of so many problems and 95% are from do it yourself’ers or just crap installs that later lead to problem that could have been prevented by a good install and installer.

They can run for a good while, long enough until your power comes back on. I wouldn't doubt several months with the proper maintenance, you should shut down every 24-36 hours to check the oil level. If it were an extreme amount of time.,I would only run during the day and shut it down at night, weather permitting and stuff. They do have a different model that is built to be the main power supply and run for outrageous amounts of time, but this particular unit would run as long as it has fuel or breaks down, I don't see any other reason it wouldn't stay running.

I have heard that for my new 22KW, the longest life on the engine is obtained with a 16 hours on, 8 hours off regimen. Anything more puts you at a risk of losing the engine with bent push rods. These are not designed for continuous use, just stand-by. Get a couple of Generac approved maintenance kits off Amazon for $30ea and a cache of synthetic 5W30 oil (1.9Q ea cycle) so you can endure a major disruption of over a month.

Hey Roberto, I think you were a bit misinformed. I had a 14Kw from 2012 to 2015 and ran that on a 325 gallon propane tank, had about 100+ hours on the generator for exercises and outages, ran 2 days straight during an outage. After 3 years I still had about 180 gallons left out of the 260 gallon supply. The newer generators don't use much gas at all. For the 22kw the specs say for propane 3.6 gallon per hour using 22 thousand watts, but one would hardly use all 22 thousand for an extended period of time. I usually run about 1 to 3 thousand watts until the furnace kicks on and the hot water tank, then I'm around 20 thousand watts for no more than 20 minutes or so per hour. The newer generators Generac has rolled out, are well designed and do use less fuel. In any event you will use far less propane or natural gas then gasoline type generators. I know a couple folks that shut theirs down during the night, when outages happen to conserve fuel, but I could run around 13 days or so, on the 22kw, that would be an average of 5,000 watts continuously. I don't think a outage would ever last 13 days around my area but, never know. I could get a refuel scheduled far before I'd ever run out. I'm pretty impressed with how little it uses to run actually.

@dan8220
6 жыл бұрын
Peter Caleb Not sure if this correct but, I figure 1 is gallon of propane is the equivalent to 3.22 kilograms. 400 is gallons is 1290 kilograms. Hard to figure because gallons is measurement by volume and kilograms is figures by weights. Generac calculations are Per Generac specs @full load of 22,000 Watts it uses 3.84 gallons per hour @ 1/2 the load, 11,000 Watts it uses 2.08 gallons per hour. And that is all they specify. To further break that down.... My calculations are Per my meter I average around 2,500 Watts of power consumption. Taking Generacs specs and breaking it down I figure fuel use of 1/2 a gallon per hour for about 2,700 Watts of power. If that is close enough I can run about 33 days on a 400 gallon tank. @ 5,500 continuous Watts I can run 16 days. The average use is between 900 and 2,000 Watts, so it varies on the fuel use.

I heard on the news the other day that Houston, Texas and surrounding area may experience brown-outs or black-outs this summer (2018). This is because: 1. More and more people and business are moving into the area. 2. Coal power power stations (3) are being shut down (government mandate... pollution). The Generac Evolution Controller on the Generac generator will sense the voltage is too low and switch off of the power company and onto the generator. Another reason to keep your Generac Generator in top running shape. We use a company "Wired Electric" for installation and servicing my generator. The big grocery stores here in Houston, HEB Grocery Chain are putting in "Whole Store Generators" that will run the whole store. These are massive natural gas generators. That company is called "Enchanted Rock Energy" www.erockhold.com/.

If you get condensation in that gas drip tube it could freeze and split.
@dan8220
7 жыл бұрын
I have read up that topic. There's nothing holding pressure into the pipe like a frozen water bottle or something else that would burst. They are now INTEGRATED into the new 2016 model units and are nothing more than a black pipe tee and 90 as they would be in the field. With LP gas you can have your supplier add antifreeze to it so it will never freeze up if you had a water condensation problem. Then again should you ever have enough water in the line to cause it to crack or bust, you have far bigger problems. Local code requires drip leg and are more to catch particles from pipe and junk more than anything.

Almost 2 times what the air cooled is. You said you don’t need more than 20kw, even with a hot tub a 20 KW would run it. The quite source generator only comes in liquid and is 27Kw. You’d only pull about 18,500 watts from a 20 KW that is NG feed. If you wanted something quite in the 20kw range you’d have to go with a Cummins. Yes, it is capable to start a 5 ton heat pump. I would get a soft start kit installed in the heat pump to help the generator along a bit at start up. Depending on how old/new your heat pump is it may have a soft starting system pre installed in it already. However do your homework, some heat pumps are not going to work well with a generator. Generac will tell you how their generators are so wonderful with all brands, and that is not always true. Most heating and cooling companies can tell you if you set up is going to work well or not. Some also install generators and are very skilled and knowledgeable of the 2 systems.

No your fine, inspect battery will come on once every year to remind you to check on the condition of the battery. As a preventative maintenance warning to check the battery comes on every year, I would still replace the battery every 3 years regardless of it's appearance. You'll get other preventative maintenance lights also in the future for things like inspect air filter, oil filter, change oil, depending on what your version of firmware you have. At 4 years you'll get a inspect spark plug reminder. If the lights ever yellow/orange it just reminders. If its red, something is wrong and needs repaired or reset probably beyond what a home owner could do. I'd call the dealer if you have a red light when not in the stop position on the evolution controller.
